Mining Companies in Birmingham: 47 Active Firms (2026)

Mining and extractive companies in Birmingham extract, quarry and process minerals under planning, environmental and safety controls.

Buying centres sit close to construction procurement, infrastructure delivery, industrial processing and energy supply chains. Buyers tend to be operational teams rather than software-style budget holders: site managers, procurement leads, engineering contractors and compliance teams looking for dependable aggregate, mineral-processing or extraction capacity. Engagements are usually governed by planning conditions, delivery schedules, haulage constraints and site safety requirements, so supplier selection is less about a short sales cycle and more about permitted capacity, location, specification, continuity of supply and evidence that environmental and safety obligations can be managed over time.

Birmingham has 47 actively trading mining and extractive companies in this cohort, making it a compact local market rather than a broad national cluster. Reported headcount totals 240 employees, which points to an operating base with real site and logistics activity, though many firms remain small by extractives standards. There is still some scale in the mix: 10 companies report more than £5M in annual turnover. New formation is limited, with 4 firms incorporated since 2022, so the local picture appears weighted towards established operators rather than a wave of new entrants.

GOV.UK frames mining, quarrying and extraction compliance around licences and permits, environmental impacts, legacy mines, subsidence and mining information. UK EITI describes minerals extraction as part of the UK mineral planning process, where operators generally need landowner agreement, planning permission from the relevant mineral planning authority and the required regulatory permits. Activity and location determine the regulator: the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and marine regulators may all be relevant. Coal-related rights sit with the Mining Remediation Authority, while active sites fall under health and safety oversight from the Health and Safety Executive or HSENI.

Birmingham’s extractives base appears mature and operationally grounded, with limited evidence of a broad early-stage pipeline. Future movement is therefore likely to come from permitting outcomes, replacement demand from construction and infrastructure customers, site life, restoration obligations and ownership changes, rather than a large flow of new company formation. Compliance capability should matter more over time, as buyers and authorities place closer attention on environmental controls, transport impacts and safety management. Smaller operators may remain viable where they hold permitted sites or local customer relationships, but consolidation pressure tends to rise when compliance costs and capital requirements become harder to absorb.

Key facts

About 21% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (10 of 47 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.

8% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (4 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.

UK extractive-industry GVA was £28 billion in 2024, down from £32 billion in 2023, with oil and gas production and associated support service activities accounting for over 95% of sector GVA.

For non-energy minerals, 185.9 million tonnes were extracted from the UK landmass for sale in 2022, led by 126.4 million tonnes of crushed rock and 40.3 million tonnes of sand and gravel.

Minerals operators generally need landowner agreement, planning permission from the relevant mineral planning authority and any required regulatory permits before extraction can proceed.

Active mining and quarrying operations are regulated for health and safety by the Health and Safety Executive in Great Britain and HSENI in Northern Ireland.

The UK is a net importer of many minerals and mineral-based products, particularly metals, while primary aggregates are largely indigenous and imports are estimated at less than 5 million tonnes per annum.

How Birmingham mining companies work and how to sell to them

What they do

Mining and extractives operators earn revenue from the sale of aggregates, industrial minerals, processing capacity and related extraction services. Pricing is usually tied to tonnage, grade, haulage distance, site access and customer-specific specification, rather than a simple subscription or licence model. Some work is spot purchasing for immediate projects, but the more valuable relationships tend to be repeat supply agreements, framework contracts or project-linked delivery schedules. The product is physical and operational: permitted reserves, plant availability, loading capacity, transport coordination, testing evidence and the ability to keep supply moving without breaching planning, environmental or safety conditions.

Who they sell to

Customers are usually construction contractors, civil engineering firms, infrastructure delivery teams, industrial processors and energy supply chain buyers across Birmingham, the West Midlands and the wider UK. Decision-making often sits with procurement managers, project directors, site managers, commercial teams and technical specifiers, with compliance and transport teams influencing supplier approval. Smaller orders may be placed directly, while larger infrastructure and public-sector work tends to move through tenders, framework agreements or preferred-supplier lists. Sales cycles can be short for repeat local supply, but lengthen where material testing, credit approval, site logistics and contractual risk allocation need to be cleared first.

What they buy

Spend tends to concentrate on plant, fleet, maintenance, fuel, haulage, testing, safety equipment and environmental controls, alongside the professional advice needed to keep permitted operations functioning. Most operators also buy finance, payroll, HR, insurance, legal, planning, land, geotechnical and environmental services. Software budgets are usually practical rather than experimental: weighbridge systems, transport scheduling, maintenance management, accounting, document control, health and safety reporting, workforce training, asset tracking and customer order management. Larger operators may also look at energy monitoring, procurement systems, cyber security and analytics where multiple sites or customer contracts make manual control harder to sustain.

Why and how to sell to them

Commercial intent often appears around planning approvals, permit changes, contract wins, ownership change, plant replacement, safety incidents, audit pressure or a move into larger customer frameworks. Common pain points are downtime, rising haulage and energy costs, slow paperwork, fragmented compliance evidence, workforce availability and the cost of meeting customer assurance requirements. Outbound messages tend to land better when they are tied to operational risk, cost per tonne, audit readiness, tender eligibility or reduced time lost on site administration. Generic productivity claims are less persuasive than proof that a supplier understands mineral planning constraints, safety obligations and the practical economics of extraction and delivery.

How this list is built

Methodology

Data sources

This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.

Classification

Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.

Freshness

The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.

Frequently asked questions

How many mining companies are there in the Birmingham?
Around 46 actively-trading mining companies are registered in the Birmingham. Of those, 10 report turnover above £5M in their most recent filed accounts.
What counts as a mining company in this list?
A company is included when its public website and filed activity descriptions indicate it sells mining products or services as its primary business — not just because of the SIC code it picked at incorporation. Each company is tagged via semantic analysis of its website content; SIC codes are used as supporting signal, not the sole gate.
Which are the largest mining companies in the Birmingham?
The list is ordered by reported UK turnover from each firm's most recent Companies House XBRL filing, so the largest mining companies in the Birmingham appear at the top of the table. About 10 of the 46 actively-trading firms report turnover above £5M in their most recent accounts; subsidiaries that file consolidated worldwide accounts are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific.
What do mining companies in the Birmingham actually do?
How does Birmingham mining compare internationally?
Cross-border comparisons of mining populations are tricky because every country defines the sector slightly differently and reports financials on different cadences. We focus this list on firms that file UK statutory accounts so the figures are comparable; international peer breakdowns aren't bundled here.
How is this list built and how fresh is the data?
The list is rebuilt from Companies House dump data, XBRL filings, and a website analysis pass over each company's public site. Companies with consolidated group accounts (worldwide rather than UK-only revenue) are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific. The page's last-updated date is shown at the top.
How big are the typical mining companies in the Birmingham?
Company sizes in this list vary widely. Median UK turnover across the actively-trading mining firms is roughly £20k in the most recent filed accounts.
Are these mostly new or established mining companies?
4 of the 46 actively-trading mining companies in this list were incorporated since 2022; the remainder were incorporated before then, so the Birmingham list mixes recent entrants with longer-established firms.
What SIC codes does this use?
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, we build a semantic understanding of what each company actually does by scraping its website and analysing it with AI. This means a company is included based on what it sells, not what SIC code it picked at incorporation. SIC codes are used as a signal but not the primary classification.
What buying signals should I look for?
The strongest signals for B2B outbound are recent leadership changes (new CFO/CRO), rapid headcount growth, revenue-band changes, and web-stack changes. Firmbase tracks all of these automatically.
