Mining & Extractives Companies in Leeds: 51 Active Firms (2026)

Mining and extractives companies operate quarries, mineral sites and extraction support services in the Leeds metropolitan area.

Buying centres tend to sit with procurement, estates, operations and project delivery teams rather than a single corporate function. Leeds-area operators usually sell into construction, infrastructure, industrial processing and remediation supply chains, with engagements shaped by permitted extraction capacity, haulage radius, plant availability and field-based technical work. The buyer profile is mostly SME and lower-mid-market: owner-managed quarrying and aggregates businesses, specialist extraction contractors and support providers that need evidence of site safety, environmental controls, restoration planning and reliable material handling before committing work.

Leeds has 51 actively trading mining and extractives companies, making this a narrow but operationally specific local cohort. Reported employment across the cohort totals 229 people, which fits a market built around lean site teams, mobile plant, technical supervisors and subcontracted capacity. Only 2 firms report turnover above £5M, so larger-scale operators are scarce in the Leeds metropolitan area. A further 5 companies have been incorporated since 2022, suggesting some new formation, but not enough to change the basic shape of a market led by established permissions, land access and repeat construction or infrastructure demand.

Permissions, rather than customer demand alone, shape the operating model. GOV.UK groups mining, quarrying and extraction compliance around licences and permits, environmental impacts, legacy mines, subsidence and mining information. UK EITI describes minerals extraction as passing through the UK mineral planning process: operators generally need landowner agreement, planning permission from the relevant mineral planning authority and any required regulatory permit. Depending on activity and location, the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency or the Scottish Environment Protection Agency may be involved. Coal-related access sits with the Mining Remediation Authority, while active sites in Great Britain fall under the Health and Safety Executive for site safety.

The Leeds cohort appears likely to remain shaped by planning consent, land availability and proximity to construction demand. Expansion tends to be incremental because permitted reserves, restoration liabilities and plant costs limit how quickly smaller operators can add capacity. Scale-up scarcity also matters: a small number of larger operators can absorb compliance overheads more easily, while smaller support specialists remain exposed to project pauses, fuel costs and site-by-site tendering. Consolidation may continue where permitted assets, haulage networks and remediation capability sit close together, but the sector is unlikely to behave like a high-churn services market.

Key facts

About 3% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (2 of 51 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.

9% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (5 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.

Mineral extraction generally requires landowner agreement, planning permission from the relevant mineral planning authority and any required regulatory permits.

Environmental permits may involve the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency or the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, depending on activity and location.

UK extractive-industry GVA was £28 billion in 2024, down from £32 billion in 2023, with oil and gas production and associated support services accounting for over 95% of sector GVA.

Active mining and quarrying operations are regulated for health and safety by the Health and Safety Executive in Great Britain and HSENI in Northern Ireland.

How Leeds mining & extractives companies work and how to sell to them

What they do

Revenue usually comes from contracted extraction, aggregates supply, processing, haulage-adjacent work and specialist site support. Pricing is often tied to tonnage, day rates, plant hire, disposal or treatment volumes, and project-specific scope rather than a pure subscription model. Some operators sell physical materials into construction and infrastructure supply chains; others earn fees from site investigation, remediation, drilling, dewatering or materials handling. Margins tend to depend on permitted capacity, fuel and maintenance costs, distance to customer sites, and whether the firm owns plant and land rights or works as a subcontracted specialist.

Who they sell to

Customers are typically construction contractors, civil engineering firms, housebuilding supply chains, industrial processors, landowners, local authorities and remediation project teams. Buying decisions often involve procurement managers, site managers, quantity surveyors, operations directors, estates teams and project delivery leads. Routine materials supply can move through repeat orders and framework-style relationships, while extraction, remediation or specialist site work tends to involve tender packs, method statements, insurance checks, safety evidence and environmental documentation. Sales cycles are usually shorter for known local buyers and longer where planning, access, testing or public-sector procurement sits in the path.

What they buy

Most Leeds-area extractives firms tend to spend on plant maintenance, fuel management, haulage support, site safety training, environmental monitoring, surveying, testing, insurance and compliance advice. Software buying is usually practical rather than speculative: finance systems, job costing, stock and weighbridge tools, fleet tracking, maintenance scheduling, document control, HR administration and basic CRM for quotes and repeat accounts. Services sellers may find demand for mineral planning advice, legal work around land access, accountancy, payroll, recruitment for field roles, health and safety consultancy, and marketing that helps win local tenders without overloading small management teams.

Why and how to sell to them

Commercial intent tends to surface when an operator wins a framework, adds plant, takes on a new site, prepares a planning or permit submission, hires operational managers, or faces a safety, restoration or reporting requirement. Pain points are usually concrete: keeping machines utilised, proving compliance to customers, controlling fuel and repair costs, managing subcontractors, and producing credible documentation for tenders. Outbound messaging works better when it is framed around reduced downtime, faster quote-to-job handover, clearer audit trails, safer field operations or lower administrative load, rather than generic digitalisation claims.

How this list is built

Methodology

Data sources

This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.

Classification

Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.

Freshness

The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.

Frequently asked questions

How many mining & extractives companies are there in the Leeds?
Around 51 actively-trading mining & extractives companies are registered in the Leeds. Of those, 2 report turnover above £5M in their most recent filed accounts.
What counts as a mining & extractives company in this list?
A company is included when its public website and filed activity descriptions indicate it sells mining & extractives products or services as its primary business — not just because of the SIC code it picked at incorporation. Each company is tagged via semantic analysis of its website content; SIC codes are used as supporting signal, not the sole gate.
Which are the largest mining & extractives companies in the Leeds?
The list is ordered by reported UK turnover from each firm's most recent Companies House XBRL filing, so the largest mining & extractives companies in the Leeds appear at the top of the table. About 2 of the 51 actively-trading firms report turnover above £5M in their most recent accounts; subsidiaries that file consolidated worldwide accounts are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific.
What do mining & extractives companies in the Leeds actually do?
How does Leeds mining & extractives compare internationally?
Cross-border comparisons of mining & extractives populations are tricky because every country defines the sector slightly differently and reports financials on different cadences. We focus this list on firms that file UK statutory accounts so the figures are comparable; international peer breakdowns aren't bundled here.
How is this list built and how fresh is the data?
The list is rebuilt from Companies House dump data, XBRL filings, and a website analysis pass over each company's public site. Companies with consolidated group accounts (worldwide rather than UK-only revenue) are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific. The page's last-updated date is shown at the top.
How big are the typical mining & extractives companies in the Leeds?
Company sizes in this list vary widely. The median actively-trading mining & extractives firm employs around 1 people, and median UK turnover across the list is roughly £65k in the most recent filed accounts.
Are these mostly new or established mining & extractives companies?
5 of the 51 actively-trading mining & extractives companies in this list were incorporated since 2022; the remainder were incorporated before then, so the Leeds list mixes recent entrants with longer-established firms.
What SIC codes does this use?
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, we build a semantic understanding of what each company actually does by scraping its website and analysing it with AI. This means a company is included based on what it sells, not what SIC code it picked at incorporation. SIC codes are used as a signal but not the primary classification.
What buying signals should I look for?
The strongest signals for B2B outbound are recent leadership changes (new CFO/CRO), rapid headcount growth, revenue-band changes, and web-stack changes. Firmbase tracks all of these automatically.
