Forecourt Retail Companies in the UK: 400+ Active Firms (2026)
Fuel and forecourt retailers in the UK sell petrol, diesel, charging access and convenience goods through roadside service stations.
Buying centres usually sit across retail operations, fuel procurement, property and facilities, and fleet or commercial accounts, rather than a purely digital commerce team. The model serves motorists making distress or journey-led purchases, commercial fleets needing reliable roadside access, and local shoppers using service-station convenience stores. Engagements are physical and repeat-transaction rather than project-led: operators manage fuel supply, shop ranging, food-to-go, vehicle services and charging access across roadside sites. Larger prospects tend to look like multi-site downstream energy or transport-service businesses, where estate maintenance, payment acceptance and store operations matter as much as pump margin.
The UK cohort is deliberately narrow: 458 actively trading companies match the forecourt retail profile, rather than the much wider universe of convenience retail or fuel distribution. That makes it a mid-sized B2B search market, concentrated around operators with physical stations, forecourt shops and fleet-facing roadside services. Reported headcount across the cohort totals 2,874 employees, which points to an operator base with many owner-managed or small-group estates alongside a thinner layer of scaled multi-site retailers. The employment footprint should therefore be read as site-heavy labour rather than desk-based software or services employment.
Fuel handling keeps the operating model closer to infrastructure retail than ordinary convenience retail. Operators need controls for storage, tanker deliveries, spill prevention, vapour management, pump calibration, price display and staff safety, while the shop side brings food handling, age-restricted sales and consumer-payment obligations. Charging access adds another operating layer because site power, dwell time and payment acceptance shape the customer proposition as much as the charger itself. Market structure also matters: forecourts sit between wholesale fuel supply, property ownership, local traffic flows and convenience merchandising, so changes in those inputs can alter margins at site level.
Future competition appears likely to turn less on fuel volume alone and more on how operators combine convenience retail, vehicle services and charging access at the same roadside estate. Smaller estates may remain exposed to maintenance costs, energy-price volatility and planning friction, while better-capitalised groups tend to have more room to refresh stores and trial longer-dwell formats. Consolidation has been a recurring route to scale in physical retail, but integration risk is not trivial: fuel compliance, store execution and local traffic patterns do not always travel neatly from site to site.

Key facts
About 10% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (46 of 458 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
19% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (89 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Fuel and forecourt retailers sit across energy distribution, roadside mobility and convenience retail rather than a single purchasing category.
Suppliers usually sell into payments, fuel handling, site operations, shop merchandising and roadside customer experience workflows.
Charging access adds another operating line alongside petrol, diesel and convenience goods, with different site economics from conventional fuel retail.
Revenue banding tends to be more useful than a single sector label because site ownership, lease structures and shop operations can vary within the same activity.

How UK forecourt retail companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Forecourt retailers earn revenue from a mix of fuel margin, convenience-store baskets, food-to-go, vehicle-service fees, charging sessions and fleet or commercial account volume. Pricing is transactional at the site level: per litre, per shop item, per service visit or per charging session, with some account-based billing for regular commercial users. Larger operators manage the estate as a portfolio, balancing low-margin fuel volume against higher-margin retail spend and the cost of maintaining pumps, tanks, signage, payment terminals and shop equipment. Supplier conversations often need to account for both head-office buying and the operational realities of individual locations.
Who they sell to
Most forecourt retailers sell primarily to motorists, local convenience shoppers and fleet users, rather than to a single enterprise buyer. Consumer demand is immediate and location-led, while commercial fleet relationships usually involve transport managers, fleet managers, finance teams and procurement. Routine retail services are often bought through direct supplier relationships, but fuel supply, payment acceptance, facilities work and fleet agreements can involve longer evaluation, especially across multi-site estates. Contract value tends to follow site count, transaction volume and the degree of operational disruption, so suppliers selling into this market usually need to distinguish between single-site operators and groups running a wider roadside network.
What they buy
Most forecourt retail firms tend to spend on payment acceptance, point-of-sale systems, stock and replenishment software, fuel pricing tools, workforce scheduling, facilities maintenance, tank monitoring, energy management, security, insurance and compliance support. The shop side creates demand for merchandising, waste management, food-safety processes, recruitment and local marketing services. The fuel and charging side brings requirements for metering, uptime monitoring, electrical work, contractor management and incident reporting. Finance and operations teams may also buy reporting tools that consolidate site-level sales, fuel volumes, card fees and maintenance costs, particularly where a group has grown by adding sites rather than building a single operating model from scratch.
Why and how to sell to them
Forecourt buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when site economics tighten, equipment needs replacing, a store format is refreshed, charging access is added, or a newly acquired estate has to be brought onto common systems. Pain points are usually practical: downtime at pumps or chargers, card-cost leakage, stock loss, staff cover, compliance evidence, contractor coordination and limited visibility across sites. Outbound that works in this sector is usually specific to operating pressure rather than generic retail growth. A credible angle links the offer to fewer site interruptions, clearer margin control, faster reconciliation, safer fuel handling or easier rollout across locations with different traffic patterns and store formats.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
