Horticulture Companies in Reading: 25 Active Firms (2026)

Horticulture companies in Reading grow, propagate and distribute plants, nursery stock and ornamental crops for local, regional and national supply chains.

Buying decisions tend to sit with garden-centre merchandisers, landscape contractors, food-production buyers, public-sector grounds teams and estates managers rather than central procurement departments. The commercial model is usually repeat seasonal supply, availability-led wholesale, contract growing or specialist fulfilment for planting schemes. Engagements are typically modest in contract size, with quality, continuity of supply and compliance with plant-movement paperwork mattering as much as price. The Reading cohort therefore skews towards specialist nursery and trading operators serving local and regional channels, with fewer signals of enterprise-scale horticulture groups.

Reading has 25 actively trading horticulture companies in this list, making it a small local cohort rather than a broad regional market. Companies with reported staff figures account for 79 employees, giving the cohort a limited reported employment footprint. Six firms were incorporated since 2022, which points to some new entrant activity, but none report turnover above £5M. That leaves the market weighted towards smaller nursery, wholesale and specialist supply businesses, where relationships with garden retail, landscaping, estates and food-production customers are likely to matter more than national distribution scale.

Plant movement sits within the plant-health regime led by Defra and the Animal and Plant Health Agency. Controlled plants, seeds, soil and plant products can require classification, phytosanitary certificates, plant passports and inspections, with the precise burden depending on whether goods are imported, moved within Great Britain or exported outside Great Britain. Operators issuing plant passports must be authorised by APHA, so compliance capability is part of the trading model for nurseries and distributors, not just a back-office task. The Horticultural Trades Association is the relevant trade body for garden and ornamental horticulture.

Local demand appears tied to housing maintenance, landscaping budgets, garden retail footfall and food-production cycles. Reading operators that can handle traceability, seasonal availability and substitution requests may find steadier buyer relationships than those competing only on spot supply. Scale-up scarcity also matters: specialist nurseries tend to add capacity in steps, through growing space, propagation capability and logistics coverage, rather than through software-like expansion. Consolidation may continue where succession issues, premises constraints or compliance costs make independent operation harder, although buyer concentration is likely to remain uneven across ornamental, edible and public-realm supply.

Key facts

24% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (6 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.

Defra and APHA control the import and movement of certain plants, seeds, soil and plant products, with phytosanitary certificates, plant passports and inspections applying to regulated material.

Operators issuing plant passports within Great Britain must be authorised by APHA.

Defra’s 2024 horticulture statistics put home-produced vegetables at just over £2 billion, fruit at just under £1.1 billion and ornamentals at £1.7 billion.

Home production accounted for 53% of UK fresh vegetable supply and 15% of fresh fruit supply in 2024, with imports at 2.2 million tonnes for vegetables and 3.3 million tonnes for fruit.

The Horticultural Trades Association estimates that environmental horticulture and landscaping contributed £38 billion to UK GDP in 2023 and supported 722,000 jobs.

How Reading horticulture companies work and how to sell to them

What they do

Horticulture operators around Reading usually make money through wholesale margin, contract growing, seasonal pre-orders, delivery charges and repeat supply agreements rather than high-value one-off projects. Their offer is physical stock with perishable and regulated characteristics: plants, nursery stock, seeds, cut flowers, foliage, and edible crops that need forecasting, grading, storage, transport and substitution management. Pricing tends to be per unit, tray, pallet, bed, scheme or growing cycle, with availability and timing shaping the final margin. Some firms also attach advisory, planting, fulfilment or aftercare services where customers need help turning stock into a finished landscape, retail display or growing programme.

Who they sell to

Most sell into practical buying centres: garden-centre category teams, landscape contractors, growers, facilities managers, estates teams, food-production buyers and public-sector grounds departments. The named buyer is often an owner-manager, operations lead, head grower, buyer, contracts manager or estates manager, with finance becoming more visible when credit limits, seasonal stock commitments or framework work are involved. Sales cycles tend to be short for repeat trade accounts and seasonal replenishment, but longer where planting schemes, public-realm contracts or food-production supply plans need specification, site visits and compliance checks. Procurement is usually relationship-led, with email, phone and trade referrals still carrying weight alongside tenders and approved-supplier lists.

What they buy

Most horticulture firms tend to spend on tools and services that protect margin on seasonal, perishable stock. Relevant categories include stock control, order management, delivery planning, accounting, payroll, CRM, e-commerce, payments, document management, health and safety, traceability, and plant-health compliance support. Larger or more process-led operators may also buy forecasting, barcode labelling, cold-chain monitoring, fleet management, energy advice, recruitment, seasonal labour support, insurance, legal services and outsourced marketing. Suppliers should expect practical scrutiny: buyers will want to know whether a service reduces waste, avoids missed delivery windows, improves cash collection, or makes inspection and plant-passport work less time-consuming without disrupting established trading routines.

Why and how to sell to them

Horticulture buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when seasonal demand exposes gaps in stock visibility, delivery capacity, paperwork, labour planning or cashflow. Useful triggers include a new growing site, a move into importing or exporting, new public-sector work, a larger landscaping contract, a change in ownership, hiring for operations roles, or a shift from ad hoc sales to repeat trade accounts. Outbound works better when it starts with operational friction rather than generic growth claims: fewer substitutions, clearer availability, cleaner audit trails, faster invoicing, lower wastage, or less time spent chasing plant-health documentation. Local proof and low-disruption implementation usually matter more than abstract return-on-investment language.

How this list is built

Methodology

Data sources

This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.

Classification

Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.

Freshness

The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.

Each company is tagged via semantic analysis of its website content; SIC codes are used as supporting signal, not the sole gate.
Which are the largest horticulture companies in the Reading?
The list is ordered by reported UK turnover from each firm's most recent Companies House XBRL filing, so the largest horticulture companies in the Reading appear at the top of the table. About 0 of the 24 actively-trading firms report turnover above £5M in their most recent accounts; subsidiaries that file consolidated worldwide accounts are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific.
What do horticulture companies in the Reading actually do?
How does Reading horticulture compare internationally?
Cross-border comparisons of horticulture populations are tricky because every country defines the sector slightly differently and reports financials on different cadences. We focus this list on firms that file UK statutory accounts so the figures are comparable; international peer breakdowns aren't bundled here.
How is this list built and how fresh is the data?
The list is rebuilt from Companies House dump data, XBRL filings, and a website analysis pass over each company's public site. Companies with consolidated group accounts (worldwide rather than UK-only revenue) are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific. The page's last-updated date is shown at the top.
How big are the typical horticulture companies in the Reading?
Company sizes in this list vary widely. The median actively-trading horticulture firm employs around 1 people, and median UK turnover across the list is roughly £44k in the most recent filed accounts.
Are these mostly new or established horticulture companies?
6 of the 24 actively-trading horticulture companies in this list were incorporated since 2022; the remainder were incorporated before then, so the Reading list mixes recent entrants with longer-established firms.
What SIC codes does this use?
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, we build a semantic understanding of what each company actually does by scraping its website and analysing it with AI. This means a company is included based on what it sells, not what SIC code it picked at incorporation. SIC codes are used as a signal but not the primary classification.
What buying signals should I look for?
The strongest signals for B2B outbound are recent leadership changes (new CFO/CRO), rapid headcount growth, revenue-band changes, and web-stack changes. Firmbase tracks all of these automatically.
