Horticulture Companies in the UK: 1,873 Active Firms (2026)
Horticulture companies in the UK grow, propagate and supply plants, crops, trees and ornamentals under plant-health rules.
Retail, landscaping and food-chain buyers tend to set the shape of demand, with procurement, category, agronomy and operations teams all involved before plants or crops move. Most relationships are business-to-business rather than consumer-led: specialist nurseries supply garden-sector buyers, edible-crop growers serve processors and food chains, and larger wholesale suppliers manage logistics and cold-chain requirements. Engagements often run as seasonal wholesale lots, contract-growing programmes or repeat supply arrangements, where crop reliability, biosecurity paperwork and delivery timing matter as much as price.

1,873 horticulture companies are actively trading in the UK, giving the sector a sizeable but fragmented base of specialist nurseries, growers and plant-supply firms. Reported headcount totals 4,472 among employers that disclose staff numbers. The commercial centre of gravity sits with employer businesses serving retailers, landscapers, food supply chains and garden-sector buyers, while many smaller firms remain tied to local growing conditions, seasonal demand and compliance overheads.
Plant-health compliance sits close to daily operations, not just import paperwork. Defra and the Animal and Plant Health Agency oversee controls on certain plants, seeds, soil, plant products, fruit, vegetables, cut flowers and foliage. Depending on activity, operators may need classification checks, phytosanitary certificates, plant passports and inspections. Importers of controlled material must register with the relevant competent authority, while exporters outside Great Britain must meet destination-country plant-health requirements. APHA authorisation is needed for operators issuing plant passports, and the Horticultural Trades Association is a relevant trade body for garden and ornamental growers.
Scale appears uneven, with specialist nurseries, propagation businesses and multi-site growers operating alongside many smaller, locally anchored firms. Demand tends to be shaped by retail ranging cycles, food-chain procurement, landscaping work and garden-sector confidence rather than any uniform buyer group. Compliance costs may favour operators that already run disciplined crop-management, biosecurity and logistics processes. Acquisitions and partnerships are likely to cluster around cold-chain capacity, protected growing and dependable wholesale supply, while recent entrants may find plant-health administration and buyer qualification a slower route to revenue than software-style growth models.

Key facts
About 7% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (133 of 1,873 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
16% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (305 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Defra and the Animal and Plant Health Agency oversee plant-health controls covering imports and movement of certain plants, seeds, soil and plant products.
Plant passports are required for regulated plant material moved within Great Britain, and operators issuing them must be authorised by APHA.
Defra put UK home-produced vegetables at just over £2 billion in 2024, fruit at just under £1.1 billion and ornamentals at £1.7 billion.
Home production accounted for 53% of UK fresh vegetable supply and 15% of fresh fruit supply in 2024; imports were 2.2 million tonnes for vegetables and 3.3 million tonnes for fruit.
The UK Food Security Report 2024 describes the overall food balance as around 60:40 domestic production to trade, with a 62% production-to-supply ratio for all food and 75% for indigenous foods in 2023.

How UK Horticulture companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from wholesale supply of living plants, edible crops, propagation material, cut flowers, foliage and related growing services. Pricing tends to be unit-based by pot, tray, tree, stem, kilo or tonne, with seasonal availability and grade affecting margin. Larger operators may add value through growing-on, grading, packing, labelling, chilled distribution and compliance documentation, while contract-growing arrangements can shift some demand risk onto the buyer. The product is still a physical, perishable item, but the commercial model often behaves like managed supply: customers pay for reliability, crop planning and delivery windows, not just the plant or crop itself.
Who they sell to
Most sellers deal with trade buyers rather than households. Garden-sector retailers, commercial landscapers, food processors, food-service distributors, public-realm contractors and fresh-produce buyers all appear in the addressable customer base, though each buys on a different calendar. Category managers, procurement leads, technical managers, agronomists, operations directors and finance teams tend to be involved before a supplier is approved. Smaller orders may be handled through direct relationships and repeat seasonal replenishment, while larger retail, food-chain and public-sector work often involves supplier onboarding, audits, tender documents, trial crops and agreed delivery schedules before regular supply starts.
What they buy
Most horticulture firms tend to spend on inputs and systems that protect crop quality, reduce waste and keep labour-heavy operations moving. Relevant categories include crop-management software, nursery stock control, traceability, compliance tools, finance systems, workforce scheduling, payroll, health and safety, CRM for trade accounts and demand forecasting. On the physical side, sellers often find fit around glasshouse equipment, irrigation, growing media, biological controls, packaging, labelling, refrigeration, vehicles and cold-chain services. Advisory services can also be credible where they help with plant-health paperwork, certification, agronomy, energy use, recruitment, accounting, insurance or preparation for buyer audits.
Why and how to sell to them
Horticulture buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when a new customer contract, site expansion, crop change or compliance requirement exposes gaps in process. Pain points are practical: seasonal labour, energy costs, pest and disease pressure, perishable stock, missed delivery windows, rejected batches and plant-health administration. Outbound works better when it links to a named operational risk, such as reducing wastage before peak dispatch, evidencing traceability for retail buyers, or shortening the time spent preparing inspection and audit paperwork. New senior hires, fresh procurement roles, greenhouse upgrades and movement into chilled or wholesale distribution can all indicate a buying window.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
