Arable Farming Companies in the UK: 6,200+ Active Firms (2026)
Arable farming companies grow cereals, oilseeds and other combinable crops, within a UK market shaped by devolved policy and crop-input controls.
Purchasing decisions tend to sit with owner-managed farm boards, land-owning estates and multi-site farming groups, rather than a discrete software or procurement function. The main buying centres are agronomy, machinery, crop storage, finance and supply-chain coordination, with seasonal decisions shaped by planting windows, input prices and forward contracts. Customers are mainly business-to-business: grain merchants, processors, feed buyers and food manufacturers, with some exposure to public-sector land and environmental schemes. Engagements are usually asset-heavy and longer term in practice, because rotations, storage capacity and machinery replacement cycles constrain short-term switching.
Across the UK, 6,216 arable farming businesses are actively trading, making this a sizeable but fragmented cohort rather than a narrow group of industrial-scale operators. The reported employment footprint is 1,666 people, which sits beside capital-intensive assets such as farmland, machinery and crop storage, so headcount alone is a limited proxy for operating scale. Turnover is concentrated: 170 businesses are above £5M, while many remain below that threshold despite controlling productive assets. The recent-entry tail is visible too, with 807 incorporated since 2022, placing newer legal entities alongside longer-established farm operators.
Devolved agricultural policy sets much of the operating context. In England, the Agriculture Act moved the policy frame away from EU-derived direct payments and towards financial assistance linked to environmental and productivity objectives, including soil quality, plant health and land management. Crop-input compliance is a separate operational constraint. HSE acts as the UK regulator for pesticide and plant-protection-product controls on behalf of the UK government and devolved administrations; only authorised products may be marketed or used. Professional users in Great Britain must register with the competent authority, and HSE can inspect businesses for compliance.
Margins appear likely to remain the main sorting mechanism. Larger farm groups tend to have more room to absorb input-price volatility, invest in yield monitoring and negotiate crop-storage or marketing arrangements, while smaller operators face a narrower path between compliance costs and commodity-price exposure. Consolidation may therefore continue through contracting, shared machinery and land-operating structures rather than only through outright corporate acquisition. Precision agriculture adoption has been uneven, but the commercial logic is clear where it reduces waste, supports audit trails and helps evidence soil or plant-health outcomes.

Key facts
About 2% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (170 of 6,216 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
12% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (807 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
England’s Agriculture Act 2020 replaced EU-derived direct payments with financial assistance linked to soil quality, plant health and land management.
HSE regulates pesticide and plant-protection-product use for the UK, and only authorised pesticide products can be marketed or used.
Professional users of plant protection products in Great Britain must register under the Official Controls (Plant Protection Products) Regulations 2020, with HSE able to inspect businesses for compliance.
Total UK cereal production was just over 19.4 million tonnes in 2024, down 12% on 2023, with production value down 22% to around £3.5 billion.
UK cereal production accounted for 79% of total new supply for UK cereal use in 2024, down from 93% in 2023, reflecting greater import reliance after a poor harvest.

How UK arable farming companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Arable farming businesses earn revenue by producing cereals, oilseeds and other combinable crops, then selling harvested output into business supply chains. Pricing is usually per tonne, with value affected by commodity markets, quality specifications, haulage, drying and storage terms. Some operators add income from contract farming, machinery services, grain storage and environmental land-management schemes. The service shape is therefore mixed: physical crop production sits beside asset management, agronomic decision-making and seasonal logistics. Engagements are often larger and slower-moving than a normal business service sale, because land access, rotations, machinery capacity and storage availability set the practical limits on change.
Who they sell to
Most arable operators sell to grain merchants, processors, feed buyers and food manufacturers, with some revenue linked to public-sector environmental schemes. Their own commercial decisions usually sit with owners, farm managers, estate managers, finance directors and, in larger groups, operations or procurement leads. Customer procurement tends to combine relationship-led trading with seasonal contracts, forward selling and quality-based acceptance at intake. Sales cycles follow the farming year rather than a quarterly software cadence: planning starts well before drilling, input choices are made ahead of application windows, and crop marketing can run from pre-harvest commitments through to stored grain sales.
What they buy
Most arable farming firms tend to spend on agronomy support, crop inputs, machinery, maintenance, fuel, storage, haulage, insurance and finance. Digitally engaged operators also buy farm management software, field mapping, yield monitoring, grain-store monitoring, weather and crop-risk analytics, compliance tools and accounting systems suited to asset-heavy seasonal trading. Professional services usually matter as well: legal advice for tenancy or contract-farming arrangements, accountancy, tax planning, environmental scheme support, health and safety advice, and recruitment for operational roles. Infrastructure pitches are more credible where they connect to field connectivity, equipment telemetry, storage condition monitoring or traceability across the crop supply chain.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often appears around harvest performance, input-price shocks, machinery replacement, new storage capacity, land-operating changes, leadership succession or a move into more formal environmental reporting. Arable buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when a cost is visible in crop margin, compliance time, downtime, storage losses or missed selling opportunities. Outbound messages work better when they map to the crop calendar and the buyer’s operating constraint, rather than a generic productivity claim. Useful angles include reducing wasted inputs, evidencing authorised crop-input use, improving audit trails, shortening finance administration, or helping larger groups compare performance across sites without adding more manual reporting.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
