IT Consulting Companies in the UK: 7,500+ Active Firms (2026)
IT consulting companies in the UK advise organisations on technology strategy, systems integration, infrastructure, security and software delivery.
Buying centres typically sit with technology leadership, finance-sponsored transformation teams, security owners and operational leaders trying to replace legacy systems or integrate newly acquired platforms. Demand is mostly B2B and public-sector rather than consumer-facing, with mid-market and enterprise clients buying expertise, delivery capacity and accountability for programmes that cut across infrastructure, applications and process change. Engagements tend to be scoped around advisory retainers, systems-integration work, cyber reviews, managed delivery teams or migration programmes, so the commercial motion is consultative and relationship-led rather than licence-led.
7,593 IT consulting companies are actively trading in the UK, making this a sizeable professional-services cohort rather than a narrow technology niche. Reported headcount totals 2,985 people, which points to a market with many small consultancies and delivery boutiques alongside a thinner layer of firms able to handle larger programmes. Only 87 companies report turnover above £5M, so revenue scale is concentrated in a relatively small group, while many operators appear to remain owner-managed, subcontractor-led or focused on specialist advisory assignments.
No dedicated sector-specific licence governs most IT consulting work, but firms often inherit the obligations attached to their clients’ operating environments. Work for public-sector bodies tends to involve procurement controls, assurance gates and audit rights; enterprise work commonly brings stricter terms around access management, subcontracting, offshoring, incident response and professional indemnity. Security and data-handling expectations matter because consultants may sit inside client systems, administer infrastructure or handle sensitive operational information. Contract structure therefore becomes part of market structure: milestone acceptance, service credits and liability caps shape which suppliers can take on higher-risk delivery work.
Margin pressure appears likely to keep separating advisory-led consultancies from labour-supply and implementation shops. Buyers tend to want fewer hand-offs between strategy, integration, security and managed delivery, which favours firms able to show repeatable delivery methods without becoming tied to a packaged product model. The newer-company tail suggests continuing entry by specialists, while the thin revenue-scale layer points to a market where consolidation, subcontracting networks and client concentration may matter more than simple company formation. Firms with credible sector knowledge and delivery governance are better placed than generalist bodies-for-hire.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (87 of 7,593 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
29% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (2,233 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
IT consulting work typically spans technology strategy, systems integration, infrastructure, security and software delivery.
Buyers use these suppliers for legacy-system change, outsourced delivery and specialist technical projects.
The market mixes delivery-heavy systems integrators with narrower security, infrastructure and implementation advisers.
Security and infrastructure assignments tend to sit closer to operational risk than general technology advisory work.

How UK IT consulting companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from billable expertise rather than software licences, with margins shaped by utilisation, scope control and the mix of senior architects, project managers and delivery engineers. Typical work ranges from diagnostic assessments and architecture reviews to migration, remediation and integration programmes, priced through day rates, fixed-fee milestones, retainers or managed-service charges. Some firms package templates, assessment methods or reusable code, but these usually support the consulting sale rather than becoming a standalone product. Expansion tends to come through follow-on work once a client trusts the delivery team inside its systems.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, CFO-sponsored transformation leads, procurement heads and programme directors with responsibility for delivery risk. Smaller assignments may be bought through direct relationships or referrals, while larger enterprise and public-sector work tends to involve RFPs, supplier frameworks, security questionnaires and contract negotiation. Sales cycles are typically short for contained reviews and longer where implementation, subcontracting or access to sensitive systems is involved. Decision criteria often combine sector knowledge, evidence of delivery governance, commercial terms, consultant availability and the ability to work alongside internal teams without creating another management layer.
What they buy
Most IT consulting firms tend to spend on systems that improve utilisation, delivery evidence and commercial control. Common categories include CRM, proposal management, professional-services automation, resource scheduling, time recording, project accounting, billing, knowledge management and document control. Delivery teams also buy cloud infrastructure, test environments, observability, identity and access management, endpoint security, vulnerability management and collaboration tools. Non-software spend can be just as relevant: professional indemnity advice, contract legal support, bid writing, recruitment, technical training, security accreditation support and subcontractor compliance services all map to the way consulting revenue is won and delivered.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when consultancies win larger client programmes, enter a public-sector framework, hire senior delivery or security leaders, integrate an acquisition, or move from project work into managed services. Pain points are usually practical: margin leakage from poor time capture, bid effort that does not convert, inconsistent delivery documentation, client audit pressure, skills shortages and difficulty governing subcontractors. Outbound messages tend to work better when they attach to those triggers and use consulting economics: higher utilisation, fewer write-offs, faster proposal cycles, cleaner access controls or clearer evidence for client assurance.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
