Merchant Acquiring Companies in the UK: 144 Active Firms (2026)
Merchant acquiring companies in the UK enable businesses to accept card and digital payments by underwriting merchants and settling transactions.
Demand tends to sit with finance, operations and commercial teams that need card acceptance to work across in-store, online and mobile channels without leaving reconciliation to manual processes. The buyer set is mostly business-to-business merchants rather than consumers: independent retailers, hospitality operators, ecommerce sellers, marketplace operators and service firms with repeat transaction flow. Engagements are usually operational rather than experimental, covering onboarding, underwriting, settlement, chargeback support, reporting and integrations into point-of-sale, ecommerce and accounting systems. Larger prospects expect merchant-risk controls and service coverage, while smaller firms tend to value quick setup, clear pricing and fewer reconciliation exceptions.

The UK market here is a compact specialist cohort: 144 actively trading merchant acquiring firms. Reported headcount totals 1,340, pointing to a category where operational staffing is part of the model rather than an afterthought. That gives the list a different profile from broad payments software or ecommerce tooling, where many entrants can remain lightly staffed for longer. Acquirers need underwriting, risk operations, settlement processes and merchant support from the outset, so the operating base tends to look more like regulated financial infrastructure than a purely self-serve software category.
Merchant acquiring is shaped by regulated payments infrastructure, but the practical burden falls unevenly across the cohort. Firms handling underwriting and settlement need controls for merchant due diligence, transaction monitoring, fraud exposure and chargeback loss, while referral-led or software-adjacent operators may sit closer to distribution and integration. Contract terms matter because merchants often experience acquiring through settlement timing, reserve requirements, dispute handling and pricing changes rather than through the underlying scheme rules. Market structure is therefore partly technical and partly credit-like: acceptance works only if risk appetite, operational controls and reconciliation processes fit the merchant mix.
Consolidation appears likely to remain a feature because acquiring rewards scale in risk operations, scheme connectivity and merchant servicing, while smaller operators can struggle to maintain margin if their only advantage is distribution. Newer entrants tend to attach acquiring to vertical software, embedded finance or marketplace infrastructure rather than offer it as a standalone service. That makes the boundary between acquirer, payment facilitator and commerce software less tidy. Scrutiny of fraud, disputes and merchant onboarding has been rising across payments, so operational discipline may matter as much as headline transaction volume for firms trying to move beyond specialist niches.

Key facts
About 14% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (21 of 144 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
15% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (23 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Merchant acquiring sits between merchants, card schemes and issuing banks, with acquirers handling authorisation, settlement and merchant risk.
Underwriting appetite is shaped by settlement timing, fraud exposure, refunds and chargeback risk across different merchant categories.
Many go-to-market models bundle acquiring with point-of-sale, online checkout or platform payments rather than selling acquiring as a stand-alone service.
Procurement tends to turn on acceptance rates, settlement speed, pricing clarity and dispute handling as much as headline transaction fees.

How UK Merchant Acquiring companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue is usually earned from transaction-linked merchant service charges, supplemented by account fees, gateway charges, hardware or integration services and dispute-related fees. The commercial unit is less a licence seat than a merchant relationship: pricing reflects card turnover, channel mix, refund rates, chargeback exposure and settlement terms. Smaller merchants may be priced through published tariffs and referral arrangements, while larger merchants expect negotiated rates, service commitments and integration support. The product shape combines regulated financial operations with software workflow: onboarding, underwriting, authorisation routing, settlement reporting and exception handling all have to work together.
Who they sell to
Buyers are normally merchants with regular card volume: independent retailers, hospitality operators, ecommerce sellers, marketplaces and service businesses. The first conversation often sits with a finance director, head of operations, ecommerce lead or commercial owner, with CTO and engineering teams involved when payment acceptance touches checkout, point-of-sale or accounting integrations. Contract size follows card turnover rather than employee count, so a lean online merchant can matter more than a larger low-volume business. Smaller accounts may arrive through self-serve, referrals or partner channels; larger retailers and marketplaces tend to use direct sales, procurement review and occasional RFP processes.
What they buy
Most acquirers tend to spend where risk, uptime and reconciliation meet. Likely categories include merchant onboarding tools, identity and business verification, fraud screening, transaction monitoring, chargeback case management, settlement reconciliation, billing and pricing engines, CRM, customer support software, data warehousing and analytics. Engineering teams may buy cloud infrastructure, observability, API management, testing, security tooling and integration support for ecommerce, point-of-sale and accounting connections. Operational teams also use legal, payments compliance, audit, accounting, recruitment and training services, especially when underwriting policy, merchant support or dispute handling starts to outgrow informal processes.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial pain is often operational before it is strategic: delayed onboarding, rising chargebacks, reconciliation breaks, support backlogs or margin leakage from poorly controlled pricing. The 21 firms above £5M revenue are more plausible buyers for governance, reporting, security and procurement-led services than very small operators, while younger acquirers may prioritise speed of setup and merchant acquisition. Good outbound angles tend to attach to observable triggers: hiring in risk or operations, expansion into a new merchant vertical, new checkout integrations, funding, leadership change, or public complaints about settlement and disputes. Claims should be framed around loss reduction, auditability and fewer manual exceptions.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
