Merchant Acquiring Companies in London: 72 Active Firms (2026)
Merchant acquiring companies process card and digital payments for merchants, with London operations spanning fintech, retail and hospitality.
Buying centres tend to sit with finance, operations and risk rather than marketing teams: acquirers are judged on onboarding speed, settlement reliability, dispute handling and the ability to keep payment acceptance working across shops, booking flows and online checkouts. The London buyer base is mostly B2B, with merchants ranging from independent service operators to multi-site retailers, hospitality groups and digital-commerce businesses. Engagements are rarely just a software subscription; they usually involve merchant due diligence, pricing negotiation, transaction routing, fraud screening and ongoing reconciliation support. Larger prospects expect reporting, exception handling and support arrangements that can withstand peak trading periods.

London has 72 actively trading merchant acquiring companies, a narrow but specialised cohort rather than a broad software population. Reported headcount totals 969 people, which points to a market with many lean operators alongside a smaller set of scaled processing and merchant-services organisations. The commercial centre of gravity sits above pure agency resale: several businesses have enough revenue to support formal underwriting, settlement operations and account management, while newer entrants tend to orbit niches such as hospitality acceptance, digital commerce and service-merchant onboarding. The result is a list that is operationally payments-led, not merely fintech-adjacent.
Merchant acquiring is shaped by scheme rules, chargeback exposure and financial-crime controls as much as by software capability. London operators selling to card-present and digital merchants must manage merchant due diligence, monitoring, settlement timing and dispute processes; those handling regulated payment services also face authorisation or registration questions in the UK payments perimeter. Commercial structure matters too: some firms own more of the acquiring and risk stack, while others package gateway, onboarding and support around processing relationships. That distinction affects margin, liability and how much control a provider has over merchant acceptance decisions.
Further development appears likely to be shaped by risk appetite rather than only by checkout technology. Merchant acquirers tend to move cautiously when sectors carry higher dispute or fraud exposure, and that can favour operators with clearer underwriting and settlement controls. London’s cohort also looks bifurcated: specialist payment operators can win around service quality and sector focus, while the more mature processors are better placed to absorb compliance work and price pressure. Consolidation may continue where smaller providers depend on external processing access, though niche operators with defensible merchant relationships should remain visible.

How London merchant acquiring companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Merchant acquirers make money from transaction-linked fees, monthly merchant-service charges, gateway or terminal fees, chargeback handling, settlement services and, in some cases, integration or support work. Pricing is usually a blend of percentage margin, per-transaction fees and negotiated commercial terms that vary by card mix, channel, sector risk and expected volume. The service shape is part infrastructure and part operations: authorisation, routing, merchant underwriting, settlement, reconciliation and exceptions handling all sit behind the merchant-facing promise that payments will be accepted and funds will arrive when expected.
Who they sell to
Most sell to merchants rather than consumers: independent shops, hospitality venues, multi-site operators, online retailers, booking-led services and other businesses that need card acceptance across physical and digital channels. The usual buyer is a finance director, owner-operator, operations lead, head of payments, CTO or procurement manager, depending on company size and integration depth. Smaller merchants may come through direct sales, referral partners or semi-self-serve onboarding. Larger merchants tend to run a negotiated process, compare pricing and settlement terms, and involve finance, legal, technology and risk teams before signing. Sales cycles can range from a short onboarding conversation to several months where underwriting and integration are material.
What they buy
Most merchant acquiring firms tend to spend on systems that reduce manual operational load and keep risk visible: merchant onboarding, identity and business verification, financial-crime screening, fraud monitoring, chargeback workflow, reconciliation, billing, CRM, support ticketing and management reporting. Payment operations also create demand for cloud hosting, data warehousing, security testing, legal advice, accounting support and recruitment for risk, compliance, engineering and customer operations roles. Sellers with sector fit usually need to show that they understand settlement files, exception queues, merchant risk tiers and the difference between an acquiring relationship and a general software account.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when an acquirer adds higher-volume merchants, enters a new merchant category, changes processing arrangements, hires senior risk or operations staff, or sees more disputes and settlement exceptions than its team can handle manually. Margin pressure makes generic efficiency claims weak; a better outbound angle is usually tied to faster merchant approval, fewer false positives, cleaner reconciliation, lower support workload or better evidence packs for disputes. Risk teams will care about control and auditability, while commercial teams will care about merchant conversion and pricing leakage. London payments buyers tend to ask for proof before pilots, so case-style evidence and clear implementation boundaries matter.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
