Payments Companies in London: 300+ Active Firms (2026)
Payments companies in London build payment processing, acceptance and settlement services for merchants, platforms and financial institutions.
Buying tends to sit across finance, operations and product rather than a single payments team. Merchant acquirers, platform operators and marketplace businesses usually care about acceptance rates, settlement reliability, reconciliation effort and dispute handling; financial institutions tend to scrutinise controls, reporting and operational resilience. Sales motions therefore split between API-led product evaluation and procurement-led service assessment, with integration work often making the first contract more complex than a standard software subscription. The most relevant suppliers for this page look like mid-market London businesses handling recurring commercial payment flows, not consumer wallet apps or general accountancy tools.

London has 300 payments companies actively trading, a relatively concentrated cohort for a category that needs merchant access, banking connectivity and technical integration capacity. Reported employment totals 1,501 people, which suggests that much of the list is made up of specialist operators rather than very large payrolls. The commercial centre of gravity is B2B: merchant services, platform payments, payment operations and cross-border settlement support for clients that already have transaction volume, compliance teams and integration budgets.
Payment acceptance and settlement sits close to regulated financial services even when the supplier is not acting as a bank. Buyer diligence tends to focus on authorisation boundaries, safeguarding arrangements, anti-money-laundering controls, fraud screening, chargeback handling and audit trails. Market structure also matters: London suppliers often sell into merchants and platforms that depend on third-party banking, card-network and account-to-account rails, so resilience and reconciliation are commercial issues as much as compliance ones. Cross-border flows add further scrutiny around currency handling, sanctions screening and local payment methods.
Commercial demand appears most resilient where payments capability is embedded into vertical software, marketplaces and finance workflows rather than sold as a generic checkout layer. Early-commercial firms may find buyer scrutiny harder as merchants ask for clearer evidence on uptime, fraud loss, settlement timing and dispute operations before committing volume. Scale-up scarcity should favour businesses with repeatable integrations and defensible compliance processes. Consolidation also looks plausible, as larger platforms prefer fewer payment partners and smaller operators face ongoing pressure from risk controls, support costs and margin compression.

Key facts
About 14% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (43 of 300 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
18% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (56 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
London payments firms sit between merchants, platforms and financial institutions, with pricing and settlement terms affecting how businesses collect and reconcile money.
Merchant services, platform payment infrastructure and financial-institution-facing services tend to have different sales cycles and buyer teams.
Some payments models rely on transaction volume, permissions and group structures more than large local operating teams.

How London payments companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Payments businesses usually earn through a blend of transaction fees, percentage take-rates, monthly access charges, integration fees and, for cross-border flows, foreign-exchange or settlement spreads. The product shape is often a mix of API infrastructure, hosted payment acceptance, reconciliation tooling and operational services rather than a pure software licence. Revenue quality depends on merchant volume, failure rates, refunds, chargebacks and the cost of downstream banking or scheme access. First engagements tend to be narrower than the eventual commercial relationship: a merchant or platform may start with one payment method, one geography or one workflow before routing more volume.
Who they sell to
Customers are usually merchants, platform operators, marketplaces, lenders, insurers, subscription businesses and other financial institutions with repeatable payment flows. Buying groups commonly include a CFO or finance director for settlement and reconciliation, a CTO or VP Engineering for integration, product leaders for checkout or embedded-payment design, and risk, compliance and procurement for controls. Small engagements may begin through direct sales or API evaluation, while larger accounts tend to require security review, contract negotiation and service-level scrutiny. Public-sector and regulated-financial buyers are more likely to use formal procurement or RFP-style processes.
What they buy
Most payments firms tend to spend on cloud infrastructure, API management, observability, incident response, data warehousing, ledgering, reconciliation and finance operations software. Security and compliance budgets are usually persistent, covering identity checks, merchant due diligence, anti-money-laundering screening, sanctions screening, fraud monitoring, penetration testing and audit support. As headcount grows, they also buy CRM, customer support tooling, HR systems, recruitment services and specialist legal advice. Sellers with payments-specific language usually fare better than generic SaaS suppliers, because buyers will expect references to settlement timing, dispute workflows, chargebacks, safeguarding and operational resilience.
Why and how to sell to them
Pain often shows up where transaction volume outruns manual operations: reconciliation breaks, dispute queues lengthen, fraud losses rise, merchant onboarding slows or engineering teams spend too much time maintaining integrations. Buying triggers include a move upmarket, a new regulated customer type, a cross-border launch, a finance leader joining, a funding event, or preparation for FCA scrutiny. The 43 firms above £5M revenue are likelier to have budget owners and internal governance, but younger operators may still buy when a risk, uptime or settlement issue threatens revenue. Outbound tends to work when it names the workflow at risk rather than promising generic efficiency.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
