Fintech Companies in London: 900+ Active Firms (2026)
Fintech companies in London build financial software, payment infrastructure and regulated digital-money services for consumers and businesses.
Buying centres in London skew towards payments and e-money operations, compliance and financial-crime teams, lending and treasury desks, wealth platforms, and digital-asset functions where permitted. Customer mix runs from SMEs buying account, payment and reconciliation tooling through to banks, marketplaces and other institutions embedding financial services into existing products. Engagements tend to sit between departmental deployments and institution-level regulated service relationships: shorter sales cycles for API-led tools, longer ones where safeguarding, credit risk, operational resilience or customer-money controls are in scope. Consumer-facing propositions still matter, but much of the commercial weight sits in B2B distribution and infrastructure.

London has 967 actively trading fintech companies in this cohort, making it a dense city-level market rather than a broad national sample. Reported employment totals 1,954 people across 118 firms, with 100% of those firms reporting some headcount. Scale is uneven: 131 companies report turnover above £5M, while 140 were incorporated since 2022. That mix points to a market with established revenue generators, but also a sizeable intake of newer businesses still testing product, permissions and distribution.
Regulation is activity-led rather than sector-wide. The FCA perimeter is most relevant where a firm operates payment accounts, handles card payments or acquiring, provides money remittance, or offers account-information and payment-initiation services. Regular UK payment-services activity normally requires an authorised payment institution, small payment institution or registered account-information status. E-money issuance brings separate FCA authorisation or registration under the Electronic Money Regulations unless an exemption applies or the firm is already permitted under FSMA. Cryptoasset activity is also moving further inside the FCA perimeter, so compliance design is part of market structure rather than a late-stage legal exercise.
London’s fintech base appears to be moving towards a split between permissions-heavy operators and lighter software suppliers that sell into finance teams, marketplaces and regulated institutions. Scale-up scarcity is likely to keep partnerships, licensing and acquisition routes important, especially for firms with narrow distribution or expensive compliance overheads. Newer entrants tend to face longer evidence-building cycles around safeguarding, operational resilience, financial crime and customer outcomes. The better-positioned categories are likely to be those where regulation creates repeat buying needs, rather than those relying on consumer switching alone.

Key facts
About 13% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (131 of 967 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
14% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (140 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Payment and e-money providers may need FCA authorisation or registration under the Payment Services Regulations 2017 and Electronic Money Regulations 2011 unless exempt.
Account information services and payment initiation services sit inside the FCA payment-services perimeter, alongside card payments, acquiring and money remittance.
In-scope cryptoasset businesses are expected to need FCA authorisation from 25 October 2027, when the new UK regime comes into force.
HM Treasury stated in April 2026 that UK fintech firms attracted over £2.6 billion in investment in 2025.
Innovate Finance reported global fintech investment fell 20% in 2024, while the UK retained second place in global fintech investment rankings.

How London fintech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
London fintech firms usually monetise through a blend of per-seat subscriptions, usage fees, transaction margins, interest-related spreads, interchange, assets-under-administration fees, implementation services and support retainers. Software suppliers sell workflow, data or API access; regulated operators sell the financial service itself, often wrapped in account, payment, lending, treasury or wealth functionality. Ad-supported models exist around consumer traffic but are less central to most B2B propositions. Engagement size tends to expand with volume, customer-money exposure and integration depth: a narrow reconciliation tool may start as a departmental subscription, while embedded finance or payment processing relationships become multi-function commercial arrangements.
Who they sell to
The buyer base is mixed: finance teams at SMEs, product and payments teams inside marketplaces, risk and compliance functions at banks, and wealth, lending or treasury teams in larger institutions. Decision-makers typically include the CFO, CTO, COO, Head of Payments, Head of Compliance, MLRO, Product Lead and Procurement. Self-serve acquisition works for narrow developer or reconciliation tools; direct sales is more common where contracts touch customer money, credit risk or regulated outsourcing. Bank and enterprise deals tend to involve RFPs, security review, operational resilience checks and legal negotiation, while SME deployments can begin with a trial, pilot or partner referral.
What they buy
Most London fintech firms tend to spend on cloud infrastructure, data storage, analytics, observability, incident management, security testing, identity and access management, and core controls around logging and encryption. Commercial teams buy CRM, customer support, billing, revenue operations and marketing attribution tools. Regulated operators often need KYC and KYB workflow tooling, financial-crime screening, transaction monitoring, complaints handling, policy management and audit evidence systems. Professional services spend usually clusters around regulatory advice, legal review, accounting, tax, penetration testing, certification support, recruitment and outsourced compliance operations. Firms selling through partners may also buy channel enablement, integration support and technical documentation services.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when fintech firms apply for FCA permission, add a regulated product line, enter a new overseas market, move from pilot volumes to live transaction flows, or hire senior finance, compliance, risk, product or engineering leaders. Other triggers include bank-partner due diligence, rising fraud losses, manual onboarding backlogs, customer-service strain and pressure to evidence operational resilience. Outbound works better when the pitch is tied to a named control owner or commercial bottleneck rather than a generic growth claim. Sellers should show how they reduce manual review, shorten onboarding, improve audit evidence, lower failed-payment rates or make unit economics clearer.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
