Open Banking Companies in the UK: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Open banking companies provide API-based financial data-sharing and payment connectivity for banks, lenders and fintechs in the UK.
Buying authority tends to sit with product, payments, credit-risk, revenue operations and developer-platform teams rather than with a single software owner. Providers sell into regulated financial services groups, accounting and wealth platforms, insurance teams and marketplaces that need consented access or payment initiation embedded inside their own customer journeys. Engagements usually begin as integration-led platform contracts, with usage fees tied to data calls, payment events or affordability checks. Security review, compliance evidence and developer support sit close to the commercial proposition, so sales cycles tend to resemble infrastructure procurement more than departmental software buying.

Around 110 open banking companies are actively trading in the UK, giving the list a relatively narrow specialist base rather than a broad software category. Reported employment totals 1,533 people across the cohort. Commercial maturity is uneven: the £5M-plus turnover group has 11 members, while 16 were incorporated since 2022. That mix points to a market where a small revenue-producing layer sits alongside newer infrastructure and workflow vendors still proving distribution through banks, lenders, payment institutions and embedded-finance partners.
Payment initiation and account-information services bring regulatory due diligence into procurement, even when the vendor itself is selling infrastructure to another regulated institution. UK buyers tend to test consent flows, customer authentication, audit trails, information-security controls and service resilience before moving live. For lenders, the same infrastructure is often tied to affordability, income verification and transaction categorisation, which makes model governance and customer-treatment evidence part of the sales process. Market structure also matters: bank connectivity is a dependency, so reliability, coverage and liability allocation often receive as much attention as product breadth.
Growth appears most likely where providers can reduce friction for regulated buyers without taking on unnecessary balance-sheet or conduct exposure. The cohort still looks early-commercial in places, with many specialists built around a narrow workflow, connectivity layer or risk use case. Scale-up scarcity should favour vendors that can package compliance evidence, reliability monitoring and developer experience into repeatable procurement artefacts. Consolidation also seems plausible where overlapping coverage maps, payment initiation tools and affordability products compete for the same bank and lender budgets, though procurement caution is likely to keep adoption incremental rather than exuberant.

Key facts
About 10% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (11 of 110 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
14% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (16 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Open banking providers in this segment are mainly B2B infrastructure suppliers rather than consumer-facing financial apps.
Core use cases include bank-account access, payment initiation and financial data exchange between institutions and software-led providers.
Typical buyers include banks, lenders and fintech operators that need API-based connectivity inside financial workflows.

How UK open banking companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a blend of platform access, usage metering and implementation work. Open banking providers package bank connectivity, consent orchestration, payment initiation, transaction enrichment or affordability workflows as APIs and hosted services, then charge minimum platform fees plus variable fees per payment, verification, data request or monitored account. Larger engagements may include service-level commitments, onboarding support, sandbox access and compliance documentation as priced components. Gross margin depends on connection maintenance, support load and the cost of keeping bank coverage current, so commercial teams tend to qualify prospects by integration volume and regulatory complexity before committing engineering time.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually regulated finance, payments and software-platform teams rather than individual departments shopping for a point tool. Typical sponsors include Heads of Payments, Product, Risk, Lending, Data, Engineering and Compliance, with procurement and legal joining once customer data, payment flows or operational resilience are in scope. Small platforms may start through direct sales and developer-led evaluation, while banks, lenders and insurers often require formal security review, risk questionnaires and supplier onboarding. Contracts tend to move from proof-of-value into production commitments, with pricing tied to forecast volume and renewal discussions shaped by conversion rates, coverage and incident history.
What they buy
Most open banking firms tend to spend on tools and services that protect availability, evidence compliance and keep integration teams productive. Relevant categories include cloud infrastructure, API management, observability, penetration testing, identity and access control, incident management, data-quality monitoring, customer-support tooling and developer-documentation services. Commercial functions often need CRM, revenue operations, billing, usage metering, payment reconciliation and customer-success systems that can cope with consumption-based contracts. Specialist legal, regulatory advisory, insurance, accounting and recruitment services can also fit, particularly where a vendor is moving from a single workflow into broader bank, lender or marketplace distribution.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often appears when an open banking provider wins a regulated customer, adds payment initiation to an existing data product, prepares for a security audit, expands bank coverage or hires senior product, engineering or risk leadership. The pain is rarely just lead generation; it is the cost of passing due diligence, proving reliability and turning developer interest into production volume. Outbound messages should usually anchor on a concrete procurement blocker, such as reducing manual evidence work, improving incident visibility, shortening integration support queues or making usage-based revenue easier to forecast. Generic fintech language tends to land poorly with buyers used to technical scrutiny.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
