How Leeds recruitment companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Leeds recruitment firms earn revenue mainly from employer-paid placement fees, temporary-worker gross margin, contract margin and, for a smaller group, retained search or outsourced hiring services. Permanent work is usually priced as a percentage of salary and paid on successful start, often with rebate terms. Temporary and contract desks run on weekly pay-and-bill cycles, where the agency funds payroll before collecting from the hirer. Who they sell to
Most sell to employers rather than candidates: local SMEs that need intermittent cover, mid-market operators with repeated hiring, larger employers that want supplier panels, and public-sector buyers using framework routes. HR managers, finance directors, operations leads and contact-centre managers tend to shape requirements, while procurement becomes more involved where spend is recurring or multi-site. Urgent temporary cover can be agreed through direct relationships and short email-based processes; permanent roles usually need vacancy qualification, fee negotiation and candidate shortlists. Larger retained, managed-service or framework agreements have longer cycles, with more scrutiny of insurance, compliance process, worker pay controls and service levels.

Recruitment buyers tend to evaluate vendors when admin starts slowing consultant output, payroll errors create worker complaints, hirers challenge timesheets, or compliance paperwork becomes harder to evidence. Other triggers include a new sector desk, a finance hire tightening credit control, a move into temporary labour, an acquisition, or preparation for a larger supplier panel. This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
