Space Tech Companies in the UK: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Space tech companies in the UK build satellite, launch, communications and downstream data systems for commercial and public-sector markets.
Buying decisions tend to sit with engineering, mission operations, geospatial analysis, telecoms network teams and public-sector procurement, rather than a single software budget owner. The clearest splits are between upstream hardware and subsystems, ground and mission infrastructure, connectivity services, and downstream analytics sold into climate, agriculture, energy and defence use cases. Engagements are usually technical, assessed and contract-led: buyers expect integration support, safety and reliability evidence, and domain expertise before moving from trials into operational use.
153 space tech companies are actively trading in the UK, making this a small, specialised cohort rather than a broad software market. Reported employment totals 1,745 people among firms that publish headcount, pointing to a base of engineering-heavy businesses with limited spare capacity for unfocused sales activity. The buyer mix implied by the cohort is also uneven: commercial aerospace, telecoms and data-service buyers sit alongside public-sector and defence demand, so qualification, procurement route and security posture are likely to matter as much as headline product capability.
Market structure is shaped by qualification and trust as much as by product fit. Suppliers selling into aerospace, defence, telecoms or climate monitoring often need to evidence operational assurance, data handling controls and continuity planning before procurement moves. Hardware-oriented work faces longer test and integration cycles than downstream analytics, while connectivity and ground-infrastructure services sit closer to telecoms procurement. Public-sector demand can help validate technical capability, but it also lengthens sales cycles and raises documentation requirements for smaller engineering teams.
Development appears likely to remain uneven. Downstream analytics and mission software tend to be easier to commercialise than hardware-heavy propositions, because they can attach to existing procurement budgets and avoid some qualification burden. The narrower scale-up layer suggests many suppliers will keep mixing grant-funded work, public-sector contracts and bespoke commercial projects. Consolidation may come through capability stacking: communications, sensing, analytics and assurance functions bundled by acquirers or partners, rather than a simple wave of standalone platform winners.

Key facts
About 5% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (9 of 153 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
15% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (24 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Space tech suppliers may sell mission components, connectivity services or analytics derived from orbital assets, rather than a single software product.
Commercial demand and public-sector procurement both shape the sector, so buyer type matters when segmenting potential customers.
The market cuts across satellite systems, launch infrastructure, space-enabled communications and downstream data services.

How UK space tech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue models split by layer of the stack. Hardware and subsystem firms earn through design contracts, non-recurring engineering, prototype builds, qualification work and production orders, often with milestone payments and long support obligations. Ground-infrastructure and mission-software suppliers are more likely to mix licence fees, managed-service retainers and integration projects. Connectivity and earth-observation providers tend to use subscription, usage-based or per-project pricing, with analytics sold as dashboards, data feeds or specialist reports. Early engagements usually carry paid discovery or feasibility work, because buyers need evidence that equipment, software and data can be trusted in operational settings.
Who they sell to
Customers are typically aerospace, defence, telecoms, energy, climate, agriculture and public-sector organisations, with some suppliers also selling to other space companies as partners or subcontractors. The buying group is technical first: engineering leads, mission operations teams, geospatial analysts and telecoms network specialists shape requirements before procurement and finance test cost, risk and contract terms. Sales are usually direct and document-heavy rather than self-serve. Small trials may be approved by a technical sponsor, but operational contracts tend to move through formal evaluation, security review, framework procurement or RFP-style processes, so cycles are often measured in months.
What they buy
Most space tech firms tend to spend on engineering and data infrastructure before broader back-office systems. Hardware-oriented teams may need design, simulation, electronics, test automation, quality management, manufacturing support, specialist insurance and technical recruitment. Mission software, connectivity and analytics firms are more likely to buy cloud compute, storage, data pipelines, telemetry monitoring, observability, identity and access management, security testing, billing and metering, CRM, customer support tooling and bid support. Services sellers should expect a high bar for subject-matter understanding, because generic digital, marketing or advisory propositions can look thin beside safety, assurance and integration workloads.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent usually appears when suppliers move from grant-funded development into repeatable delivery, when a public-sector opportunity creates documentation work, or when a customer trial needs to become an operational contract. Other useful triggers include new technical leadership, recruitment for systems engineering or data science roles, expansion into defence or telecoms accounts, and a shift from bespoke projects toward recurring services. Outbound works better when it is specific to the workload: reducing qualification drag, shortening integration time, evidencing data controls, improving uptime, or helping a small engineering team manage procurement without distracting from delivery.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
