Space Tech Companies in London: 40 Active Firms (2026)

Space tech companies in London build satellite, sensing and orbital data technologies for commercial, defence and research markets.

Buying centres cluster around satellite applications, geospatial and sensing outputs, mission-support software, communications and specialist engineering, rather than generic IT services. Customers are a mixed set: commercial infrastructure operators, defence and public-sector buyers, research groups and lower-mid-market technology partners. Engagements tend to be lumpy: paid pilots, integration work, data-service subscriptions and engineering contracts, with technical validation before broader deployment. The sales motion is therefore closer to consultative enterprise software and applied engineering than to high-volume self-service tooling, even where the product is delivered as software.

London's cohort is compact: 40 actively trading space tech companies sit in the capital, with reported headcount totalling 148 people. That employment footprint points to specialist teams rather than large production organisations, and fits a market where many suppliers sell into public-sector, defence, research and infrastructure channels before building repeatable commercial volumes. Hardware-adjacent work also matters; engineering, sensing and mission-support activities tend to require longer validation cycles than generic digital services, which can keep companies lean while they prove use cases.

Activity-specific permissions shape the operating context for space-enabled suppliers. Satellite communications, remote sensing, launch support, mission operations and defence-related work each bring due-diligence questions around spectrum use, orbital safety, export-controlled components, information security and end-customer eligibility. London suppliers often sit downstream of the physical mission, selling geospatial analysis, software, mapping or mission-support capability into larger prime, infrastructure or research programmes. That structure can lengthen sales cycles and create evidence requirements that look closer to defence and infrastructure procurement than ordinary SaaS.

Early-commercial weight appears to shape the next phase of the London space tech cohort. Downstream analytics and mapping suppliers tend to commercialise faster than hardware-adjacent engineering businesses, but they can face sharper substitution risk if buyers treat outputs as interchangeable data layers. Defence and infrastructure demand favours firms that can document reliability, security and integration depth, while research-linked work can keep pipelines project-based. Consolidation may come through partnerships and supplier absorption rather than consumer-style land grabs. More durable positions are likely to come from repeatable services built out of bespoke mission work or geospatial analysis.

Key facts

About 5% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (2 of 40 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.

32% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (13 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.

Space technology procurement in London spans earth observation, communications, navigation and analytics, so buyer conversations often sit outside launch services.

The London market tends to split between satellite-adjacent technology providers, sensing businesses and orbital-data companies.

Commercial users generally buy analytics, defence customers prioritise resilient systems, and research organisations work with space-derived information.

How London space tech companies work and how to sell to them

What they do

Revenue usually arrives through a mix of engineering contracts, integration fees, software licences and recurring access to space-enabled data services. London space tech firms often package technical capability around a narrow operational problem: monitoring assets, modelling environmental conditions, supporting mission planning, improving connectivity or interpreting sensor outputs. Early engagements tend to be paid trials or scoped projects rather than low-friction subscriptions, because buyers need to test accuracy, reliability and integration with existing systems. Where recurring revenue exists, it is usually tied to usage, seats, service levels or access to analysis workflows, with services work sitting alongside the product until deployment patterns become repeatable.

Who they sell to

Most sell to technical and operational buyers rather than broad departmental users. Typical sponsors include CTOs, heads of engineering, geospatial leads, programme managers, defence commercial teams, infrastructure operators and research directors, with finance and procurement joining once a pilot moves towards production. Public-sector and defence routes often involve frameworks, grant-linked programmes or RFPs; commercial infrastructure buyers are more likely to use direct procurement after a technical trial. Contract values vary because some purchases are narrow software subscriptions while others include integration, security review, engineering support and access to specialist analysis. Sales cycles tend to lengthen where orbital, spectrum, export-control or security questions sit in the background.

What they buy

Most space tech firms tend to spend on tools that help small technical teams prove reliability, protect sensitive work and turn specialist outputs into repeatable products. Common needs include cloud infrastructure, geospatial processing, observability, cybersecurity, device and telemetry management, technical documentation, CRM, billing, bid management, finance systems and project accounting. Hardware-adjacent suppliers may also need test facilities, simulation tools, electronics support, manufacturing partners and quality-management advice. Services spend often clusters around grant writing, public-sector tendering, export-control advice, insurance, intellectual-property work, specialist recruitment and marketing that can explain technical claims without overstating them. Suppliers selling into this market need to show how they reduce delivery risk, not just administrative effort.

Why and how to sell to them

Space tech buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a pilot becomes a production deployment, a public-sector bid is live, a defence or infrastructure customer asks for security evidence, or a technical team starts hiring beyond the founding group. Incorporation since 2022 also matters as a signal: London has a sizeable newer cohort that may still be building finance, sales and delivery processes around project revenue. Useful outbound angles are usually specific to bottlenecks: shortening procurement evidence cycles, improving traceability, reducing manual analysis, managing project margins or preparing for regulated customers. Generic scale-up messaging is less likely to land than proof that a vendor understands technical validation and long procurement paths.

How this list is built

Methodology

Data sources

This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.

Classification

Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.

Freshness

The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.

Frequently asked questions

How many space tech companies are there in the London?
Around 38 actively-trading space tech companies are registered in the London. Of those, 2 report turnover above £5M in their most recent filed accounts.
What counts as a space tech company in this list?
A company is included when its public website and filed activity descriptions indicate it sells space tech products or services as its primary business — not just because of the SIC code it picked at incorporation. Each company is tagged via semantic analysis of its website content; SIC codes are used as supporting signal, not the sole gate.
Which are the largest space tech companies in the London?
The list is ordered by reported UK turnover from each firm's most recent Companies House XBRL filing, so the largest space tech companies in the London appear at the top of the table. About 2 of the 38 actively-trading firms report turnover above £5M in their most recent accounts; subsidiaries that file consolidated worldwide accounts are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific.
What do space tech companies in the London actually do?
How does London space tech compare internationally?
Cross-border comparisons of space tech populations are tricky because every country defines the sector slightly differently and reports financials on different cadences. We focus this list on firms that file UK statutory accounts so the figures are comparable; international peer breakdowns aren't bundled here.
How is this list built and how fresh is the data?
The list is rebuilt from Companies House dump data, XBRL filings, and a website analysis pass over each company's public site. Companies with consolidated group accounts (worldwide rather than UK-only revenue) are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific. The page's last-updated date is shown at the top.
How big are the typical space tech companies in the London?
Company sizes in this list vary widely. The median actively-trading space tech firm employs around 1 people, and median UK turnover across the list is roughly £28k in the most recent filed accounts.
Are these mostly new or established space tech companies?
12 of the 38 actively-trading space tech companies in this list were incorporated since 2022; the remainder were incorporated before then, so the London list mixes recent entrants with longer-established firms.
What SIC codes does this use?
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, we build a semantic understanding of what each company actually does by scraping its website and analysing it with AI. This means a company is included based on what it sells, not what SIC code it picked at incorporation. SIC codes are used as a signal but not the primary classification.
What buying signals should I look for?
The strongest signals for B2B outbound are recent leadership changes (new CFO/CRO), rapid headcount growth, revenue-band changes, and web-stack changes. Firmbase tracks all of these automatically.
