Startup Companies in Cambridge: 69 Active Firms (2026)
Startup companies in Cambridge build early-stage products and services with scalable business models across the city’s technology cluster.
Buying centres tend to sit around commercialising research, specialist software, scientific services, data tools and service-led technology for corporate customers. The customer base is mostly business-to-business, with sales into smaller firms, mid-market buyers and technical teams inside larger organisations rather than broad consumer markets. Engagements are often paid pilots, proof-of-concept licences, technical service contracts or narrow departmental subscriptions; founder-led sales and short reference cycles matter more than procurement theatre at this stage. The common thread is early commercial validation, not a single sector vertical.
Cambridge has 69 active trading startup-tagged companies in this list, a compact cohort by UK standards but one with a visible employment footprint: reported headcount totals 945 people. The composition still skews early stage: 15 were incorporated since 2022, while only 1 reports turnover above £5M, so the revenue distribution appears concentrated below later-stage scale-up levels. For researchers, that makes the city more useful as a funnel of commercially active early ventures than as a broad sample of mature high-turnover businesses.
Startup status does not create a separate UK permissions regime. The common baseline is company-law administration: confirmation statements, accounts and identity checks before some filings. Activity then determines the specialist overlay. Cambridge startups offering regulated financial services need FCA permission; those touching energy supply, aviation, healthcare data or medical products may meet OFGEM, CAA, ICO or MHRA requirements. The same firm can move from low-friction software sales to regulated operations if it begins holding client money, processing sensitive personal information or making clinical claims, so lifecycle labelling is a poor substitute for activity-based review.
Commercial progression appears uneven rather than linear. Many Cambridge startups tend to begin with grant-funded research, founder networks or a small set of early customers, then face a harder step when procurement, compliance evidence and repeatable sales processes become unavoidable. The scarcity of high-turnover firms suggests that the funnel narrows before maturity, which is common in deep-technology and specialist scientific markets. Consolidation may come through hiring, licences and asset purchases as much as formal acquisitions. The better-positioned cohorts are likely to be those that can turn technical credibility into repeatable contracts without adding regulatory burden faster than revenue.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (1 of 69 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
21% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (15 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Startup is a lifecycle and size tag rather than a separate UK regulatory category, so ordinary company-law obligations still apply.
Sector-specific permissions still apply where the activity falls under financial services, energy supply, aviation, healthcare or legal regulation, including the FCA, OFGEM, CAA or MHRA.
DBT estimated 5.5 million private-sector businesses at the start of 2024, with SMEs accounting for 99.8% of the business population.
ONS reported 2.725 million UK businesses registered for VAT and/or PAYE as of March 2024, down 0.1% from March 2023.
A 2024 global startup ecosystem report ranked Silicon Valley #1 globally, with New York City and London tied at #2.

How Cambridge startup companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Cambridge startups usually earn through a mix of early customer revenue, funded development work and repeatable product sales once a technical proposition has been proven. Software-led firms tend to move from free trials or paid pilots into subscription licences, usage-based fees or annual departmental contracts. Scientific and service-led technology firms often sell feasibility work, testing, analysis, prototype development or IP-backed licences before revenue becomes repeatable. Pricing is commonly shaped by scarce founder time, specialist technical input and customer willingness to underwrite risk, so many engagements begin as small sponsored projects rather than full enterprise deployments.
Who they sell to
Most sell to technical or commercial sponsors inside other businesses: CTOs, heads of product, R&D directors, operations leads, finance buyers and, in regulated sectors, compliance or clinical decision-makers. Smaller customers may buy directly after a founder-led demonstration, while larger organisations usually need a technical sponsor, budget owner and procurement sign-off before a pilot expands. Sales cycles tend to be short when the buyer is testing a narrow workflow, but lengthen when information security, IP terms, data protection, clinical evidence or integration work is involved. Partner referrals, university networks and specialist advisers often matter alongside direct outbound.
What they buy
Most Cambridge startups tend to spend cautiously, but they still need the operating stack that lets a small team sell, ship and stay compliant. Common purchases include accounting, payroll, CRM, customer support, billing, contract management, security monitoring, cloud hosting, developer tooling, data storage, website infrastructure and project management software. More technical firms may also buy lab services, testing facilities, quality management systems, patent advice, grant-writing support and specialist recruitment. Buying is often founder-approved until a finance, operations or commercial lead is hired, so vendors need to make setup time, cash impact and immediate operational fit plain.
Why and how to sell to them
Startup buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when a trial customer becomes a contract, a grant creates delivery obligations, headcount rises, a senior commercial or finance hire arrives, or a regulated activity moves from planned to live. The main constraints are time, cash, proof and distraction: founders may like a tool but defer it if onboarding absorbs engineering or scientific capacity. Outbound works better when it links to a current trigger, such as first enterprise procurement, investor reporting, compliance evidence, repeatable sales activity or customer onboarding. Claims should be specific, short and tied to reducing operational drag rather than generic growth language.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
