Aerospace & Defence Companies in Leeds: 47 Active Firms (2026)
Aerospace and defence companies design, supply or support aircraft, security and controlled dual-use systems around Leeds.
Procurement and engineering teams, rather than general IT buyers, shape most purchasing in this market. Leeds-area suppliers tend to sell to civil aviation operators, defence contractors, security customers and regulated manufacturers that need traceable components, maintenance support, specialist machining or systems-integration capability. Engagements are usually project or framework based, with qualification, safety documentation and export-control screening built into the sales cycle. The commercial pattern is closer to technical supply-chain contracting than subscription software: fewer high-volume transactions, more repeat work with approved customers, and purchasing decisions that often involve operations, quality, finance and compliance together.
Leeds has 47 actively trading aerospace and defence companies in this list, giving the city a relatively concentrated cohort rather than a broad national hub. Reported employment across these companies totals 757 people, so the footprint is visible but still weighted towards specialist suppliers and services businesses. Turnover distribution points the same way: 11 firms report more than £5M of UK turnover, while the remainder sit below that threshold. The local market therefore looks more like a cluster of engineering, maintenance and controlled-supply businesses than a set of large platform manufacturers.
Civil aviation work around Leeds sits under CAA safety and certification oversight, with market access also shaped by alignment with EASA and closer cooperation with the FAA. Defence and dual-use supply brings a separate compliance route. gov.uk guidance requires exporters to check the consolidated list and seek Export Control Joint Unit licences where items are controlled, end-use concerns arise or sanctions apply. The Export Control Act and Export Control Order provide the legal basis, and exporting controlled items without the correct licence is a criminal offence. ADS also matters as the trade association spanning aerospace, defence, security and space.
Supply-chain and technical-services specialists appear likely to remain the centre of gravity. The cohort tends to favour approved-supplier relationships, certification know-how and repeat maintenance or component work, rather than speculative product launches. That can make growth lumpy: an individual defence programme, aviation customer or export-control decision can alter workload more than broad demand trends. Scarcity of larger firms may also keep consolidation on the table, especially where buyers want certified capacity, quality assurance and established customer access. Companies able to straddle civil aviation and controlled dual-use work should have options, but compliance costs will remain a brake on very early commercial teams.

Key facts
About 23% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (11 of 47 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
10% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (5 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The CAA oversees civil aviation safety and certification, while ADS notes that EASA alignment and closer FAA cooperation matter for market access.
Defence and dual-use exporters must check the consolidated list and seek Export Control Joint Unit licences where controlled items, end-use concerns or sanctions apply.
UK defence orders reached £13.2 billion in 2024, up from £11.9 billion in 2023.
Aerospace products accounted for 53% of UK defence export orders over 2020–2024.
The UK aerospace industry is export-driven, with 70% of domestic aerospace production exported in 2023.

How Leeds aerospace & defence companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from engineered supply, maintenance support, inspection work, low-volume manufacturing and systems-integration projects. Pricing tends to combine unit rates for components, labour-day rates for technical services, non-recurring engineering charges, tooling costs and milestone payments linked to acceptance. Some suppliers earn repeat revenue through approved-supplier call-offs or spares work, but the commercial model is rarely subscription led. Margin depends on qualification status, material availability, documentation burden and the ability to price design changes before they become unpaid engineering effort.
Who they sell to
Customers are typically prime contractors, tier suppliers, aircraft operators, maintenance organisations, regulated manufacturers and defence or security buyers. The buying group usually includes procurement, engineering, programme management, quality, finance and compliance, with senior sign-off where export controls, safety certification or customer qualification are involved. Sales cycles tend to run in months rather than weeks, particularly when a new supplier must pass audits or technical assessment. Routes to market are often direct, through approved-vendor lists, framework agreements, formal tenders or partner-led bids into larger programmes.
What they buy
Leeds aerospace and defence firms tend to spend on systems that keep engineering, production and compliance traceable. Common categories include quality management, document control, ERP and MRP, CAD and CAM, product lifecycle management, inventory tracking, calibration management, non-conformance reporting, cyber security, CRM and bid management. Services spend often sits around export-control advice, CAA-related compliance support, insurance, accountancy, technical marketing, recruitment and training for machinists, inspectors, project managers and quality roles. Physical spend can include test equipment, workshop tooling, metrology, secure storage and subcontract manufacturing capacity.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying interest tends to appear when firms win a new framework, add an aviation or defence customer, prepare for an audit, expand workshop capacity, recruit a quality lead or begin exporting controlled goods. Pain points are practical: long qualification cycles, customer documentation, cash tied up in materials, scarce technical labour and the risk of delays from licence checks or failed inspections. Outbound works better when it speaks to audit readiness, traceability, bid response time, delivery reliability or margin protection. Claims need evidence, because buyers in this market are used to checking certificates, standards and delivery history.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
