B2B Companies in Sheffield: 1,897 Active Firms (2026)
B2B companies in Sheffield sell products, services and operational support to other organisations across the city-region economy.
Buying centres tend to sit in procurement, finance, operations, IT and facilities rather than in consumer-facing teams. Sheffield-based suppliers in this list are likely to sell account-managed contracts to mid-market and enterprise buyers, with some serving regional SMEs where framework purchasing or repeat service agreements matter. The cohort spans goods, engineering support, business software, professional services and outsourced operational infrastructure, so engagement size is usually shaped by contract duration, service-level expectations and integration burden rather than ad hoc transaction value. Sales motions tend to involve qualification, formal tendering, renewal management and compliance checks around customer-contact information.

Sheffield has 1,897 actively trading business-to-business companies in this list, a sizeable local base for a city-region economy shaped by services, goods supply and engineering support. Reported employment across the cohort totals 8,473 people, giving the market a visible payroll footprint as well as a supplier base for local purchasing teams. Within the commercial scale band, 307 companies sit above £5M turnover, while 109 were incorporated since 2022; that mix points to a market weighted towards established suppliers rather than very new entrants.
Business-to-business activity does not sit under a single UK licence; the rulebook depends on the activity being sold, with financial services, telecoms, data processing and professional services each bringing different obligations. For marketing, the ICO treats PECR as relevant to direct marketing by live calls, automated calls, electronic mail and fax. Business emails or texts to corporate bodies may sit outside the PECR consent rule, but the sender must identify itself and provide a valid opt-out route. UK GDPR still applies when business-contact details identify a person, and live calling requires screening against the relevant telephone preference registers and recorded objections.
Demand appears tied less to consumer cycles than to procurement confidence inside other organisations. Suppliers with repeat contracts and sector-specific knowledge tend to be better placed than generalist providers, especially where buyers need assurance on data handling, delivery continuity and account governance. Newer entrants may find customer acquisition slower because formal procurement, telephone-screening rules and opt-out handling add friction before an initial contract is won. Consolidation appears plausible where fragmented service niches overlap with software-enabled operations, although Sheffield's base is likely to remain broad rather than dominated by a narrow set of venture-backed firms.

Key facts
About 16% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (307 of 1,897 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
5% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (109 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
B2B is not a single licensed industry in the UK; rules depend on the underlying activity, such as financial services, telecoms, data processing or professional services.
For B2B marketing, the ICO says PECR covers direct marketing by live or automated calls, electronic mail and fax.
UK GDPR still applies where personal data is processed, including business-contact data.
For live B2B marketing calls, ICO guidance says organisations must screen against CTPS and TPS and must not call businesses that have objected.
ONS reported 2.73 million VAT and/or PAYE businesses as of March 2025, up 0.4% from March 2024.

How Sheffield B2B companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Sheffield B2B suppliers usually earn revenue through contracted supply rather than one-off checkout behaviour. Goods distributors and engineering support providers make margin on product supply, installation, maintenance and call-out work; software firms use subscriptions, licences, implementation fees and support tiers; professional and outsourced services charge retainers, day rates or managed-service fees. Pricing tends to reflect contract length, service coverage, reporting needs and the amount of buyer-side integration required. Renewal income matters because many buyers prefer known suppliers once compliance checks, onboarding and contact governance have been completed.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually organisations with procurement discipline: regional SMEs buying repeat services, mid-market operators standardising suppliers, and larger enterprises running account-managed tenders. The usual stakeholders are procurement managers, finance directors, operations leads, IT managers and facilities teams, with legal or compliance drawn in when customer-contact information, outsourcing or service-level commitments are involved. Sales cycles tend to be shorter for repeat purchases and renewals, but formal tendering can stretch across budget review, supplier due diligence and contract negotiation. Direct sales is common, though partner introductions and framework access can matter where the buyer wants reduced procurement risk.
What they buy
Most Sheffield B2B firms tend to spend on systems that help them win, deliver and renew contracts. Common categories include CRM, quotation and proposal tooling, contract management, billing and credit control, finance systems, HR and payroll, cyber security, data protection support, analytics, telephony, cloud hosting and workflow software for service delivery. Firms with field teams or physical supply chains may also buy fleet, inventory, scheduling, facilities and health-and-safety support. Professional spend often covers legal advice, accounting, insurance, recruitment, training, bid writing, search marketing and outsourced compliance work.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often appears around contract renewal windows, new framework applications, expansion into a regulated customer base, a finance or operations leadership change, or a rise in account-management headcount. Pain points are usually prosaic: tender administration, poor pipeline visibility, late payments, integration work, margin control, service reporting and evidence for audits. Outbound works better when it links to those pressures rather than to generic growth language. Useful angles include lowering procurement admin, improving renewal discipline, making UK GDPR and PECR processes easier to evidence, or reducing the operational cost of serving larger accounts.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
