Boutique M&A Companies in London: 92 Active Firms (2026)
Boutique M&A companies in London advise smaller and mid-market business sales, acquisitions and capital events across the city.
Buying usually starts with owner-managers, finance directors and boards rather than procurement teams, with private investors and corporate development desks appearing on buy-side mandates. The London cohort skews towards specialist advisory teams handling preparation, valuation, negotiation and execution for founder-owned and mid-market situations. Engagements tend to be bespoke projects, often combining an upfront retainer with a completion-linked fee, so relationship access and sector focus matter more than platform scale. The typical client wants a controlled process, a defensible valuation and credible buyer access, not a broad investment-banking bench.
London has 92 actively trading boutique M&A companies matching this profile, a small cohort by advisory-market standards and one that appears more capacity-constrained than technology-led. Reported headcount totals 535, which fits the operating model: partner-led origination, small execution teams and variable external support around diligence, legal work and tax. Only 8 companies report more than £5M in revenue, so the visible scale tier is narrow; most firms appear closer to owner-managed professional services than institutional investment banks. A further 9 were incorporated since 2022, suggesting some new formation without changing the overall small-firm shape.
Regulatory exposure depends on the activity, not the label on the mandate. Plain company-sale advice, valuation work and negotiation support can look different from arranging investments, distributing securities or handling client money, so boutique advisers tend to draw careful boundaries around scope, disclaimers and referrals. London also creates a dense referral market: accountants, lawyers, lenders and private investors can originate work, but the same network raises conflict-management expectations. For researchers, the practical market-structure point is that apparent size can understate influence, because a lean adviser may still control access to a narrow buyer universe.
The sector appears likely to remain fragmented, with reputation, sector focus and partner networks doing much of the work that scale performs in larger advisory houses. Newer firms can enter with limited infrastructure, but credibility takes longer to build because mandates depend on trust, buyer access and evidence of completed processes. Consolidation may occur where succession, compliance costs or cross-border buyer reach create pressure on very small teams. Even so, the cohort tends to reward independence: founder-shareholders often prefer advisers who look close to the deal rather than distant from it.

Key facts
About 8% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (8 of 92 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
9% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (9 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Boutique M&A advisers tend to sit between accountancy-led corporate finance teams and larger investment banks, with mandates centred on business sales, acquisitions, management buyouts and capital events.
London demand is shaped by owner-managed exits, private-equity bolt-ons, sector-specialist acquisition searches and capital events for companies below bulge-bracket attention.
Relationship-led origination and sector familiarity matter in smaller and mid-market transactions where formal auction processes are less common.
Procurement often starts from existing adviser and referral networks rather than open supplier searches, which can make category mapping untidy.

How London boutique M&A companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Boutique M&A advisers earn revenue by selling partner-led professional services around company sales, acquisitions and related valuation work. Fees typically combine a retainer for preparation and process management with a completion-linked element when a transaction closes, so revenue is lumpy and tied to mandate conversion. The service is not a repeatable software product: it is a controlled project covering positioning, buyer mapping, financial materials, negotiation support and coordination with lawyers, accountants and lenders. Smaller mandates can still require senior attention because trust, confidentiality and buyer credibility sit at the centre of the work.
Who they sell to
Typical buyers are founder-shareholders, owner-managers, finance directors and boards preparing for a sale, as well as private investors and corporate acquirers looking for targets. Procurement rarely controls the process; buying is usually direct, referral-led and shaped by previous relationships with accountants, lawyers, lenders or investors. Contract value is mandate-specific and often success-weighted rather than bought from a rate card. Sales cycles can be long and uneven, because clients may speak to advisers well before a transaction is viable and then move once succession, valuation expectations or buyer interest becomes concrete.
What they buy
Most boutique M&A firms tend to spend on tools and services that protect partner time, improve deal execution and reduce operational risk. Relevant categories include CRM for relationship mapping, secure document sharing, virtual data-room support, financial modelling, market research, buyer intelligence, project management, compliance workflows, email security and knowledge management. They also buy specialist legal, tax, accounting, design, copywriting and recruitment support, usually in narrow bursts around live mandates or new hiring. Pitches that assume a large technology department often miss the mark; many firms need low-friction adoption, clear accountability and evidence that confidential client work will remain controlled.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial pain usually appears when a lean team has more live mandates than execution capacity, when a new sector focus needs better buyer coverage, or when succession and compliance costs force partners to tidy internal processes. Hiring, a new partner group, cross-border buyer work and a visible push into mid-market transactions can all indicate buying intent. Outbound tends to land better when it speaks to mandate outcomes: shorter preparation cycles, cleaner diligence packs, fewer manual follow-ups, better relationship visibility and reduced risk around confidentiality. The safer angle is efficiency and control, not scale for its own sake.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
