Genomics Companies in the UK: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Genomics companies in the UK develop sequencing, analysis and precision-medicine services for healthcare and life-science customers.
Buying centres cluster around laboratory and sequencing operations, clinical genomics teams, pharmaceutical research groups and informatics functions that need interpretable molecular evidence rather than general health-administration software. The customer base is mostly business-to-business, with healthcare, research and life-science buyers assessing tools through scientific validity, workflow fit and evidence of repeatable delivery. Engagements tend to be specialist and consultative: contracted analysis, retained bioinformatics support, laboratory-service agreements and precision-medicine projects, often with procurement led jointly by scientific, clinical and commercial stakeholders.
There are 168 actively trading genomics firms in the UK, making this a specialist cohort rather than a broad healthcare-services category. Reported employment totals 1,282 people, concentrated in companies that publish staff numbers rather than in a long tail of consumer-facing providers. Commercial maturity is uneven: 16 firms report turnover above £5M, while 21 have been incorporated since 2022. That mix fits a market in which laboratory capability, clinical credibility and pharmaceutical customer access matter as much as software distribution.
Activity-based regulation matters more than the sector label. A firm offering research-only bioinformatics faces a different assurance burden from one supporting molecular diagnostics, clinical interpretation or patient stratification for drug development. Buyers in healthcare, pharmaceutical and research settings tend to test claims through validation evidence, sample governance, reproducibility and information-security review. That pushes many suppliers towards narrower use cases, where the intended user, biological sample type and decision pathway can be described precisely.
Commercial development appears likely to stay selective. Firms with defensible laboratory workflows or analysis methods tend to have clearer routes into healthcare and pharmaceutical budgets, but sales cycles remain tied to validation, procurement and clinical confidence. The thinner scale-up layer suggests that many businesses may remain specialist providers rather than broad platforms. Consolidation also appears plausible where adjacent capabilities, such as sequencing, interpretation and decision-support tooling, need to be packaged for buyers that prefer fewer suppliers and clearer accountability.

Key facts
About 9% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (16 of 168 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
12% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (21 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Genomics suppliers sell sequencing, analysis and precision-medicine services to healthcare and life-science customers that do not want to build every capability in-house.
Commercial models tend to split between service-led sequencing, specialist interpretation and software-supported clinical or research workflows.
Healthcare use cases put genomic information close to clinical governance, data-protection and information-security requirements.
Precision-medicine work depends on the practical link between genomic information, interpretation and its use in patient or research settings.

How UK genomics companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Genomics firms usually earn through a mix of laboratory services, contracted analysis, bioinformatics support, software licences and precision-medicine project work. Pricing often follows the unit of work: per sample, per analysis, per study, annual licence or retained service agreement. Smaller engagements may start as validation projects or research collaborations, while larger accounts tend to become repeat laboratory-service or informatics contracts once workflows are embedded. The commercial shape is therefore less like general healthcare software and more like specialist scientific delivery, where methods, turnaround times, sample handling and interpretation quality define value.
Who they sell to
Healthcare providers, pharmaceutical research groups, academic research organisations and life-science companies are the main buyers. Typical decision-makers include laboratory directors, clinical genomics leads, heads of bioinformatics, translational medicine teams, R&D sponsors and procurement functions, with information-security and legal review often involved when patient or sample-linked information is handled. Sales are usually direct and consultative rather than self-serve. Many deals move through pilots, validation studies, research-service agreements or framework-style procurement before wider use, because buyers need confidence that a method fits their scientific question, clinical pathway or drug-development programme.
What they buy
Most genomics firms tend to spend on laboratory equipment support, cloud computing, data storage, workflow management, quality management, security, CRM, billing, finance, HR and analytics. Bioinformatics-heavy teams may also buy developer tooling, observability, data-pipeline support and specialist recruitment for computational biology, software engineering and scientific operations. Service spend often covers legal review, clinical or research governance, regulatory advice, grant support, marketing to life-science audiences and contract negotiation with healthcare or pharmaceutical customers. Suppliers that understand sample governance, reproducibility, audit trails and scientific buyer committees usually have an easier starting point than those selling generic back-office efficiency alone.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when genomics companies move from research projects into repeat commercial delivery, add clinical or pharmaceutical customers, expand laboratory throughput or hire senior scientific and commercial operators. Common pressures include long validation cycles, complex sample governance, data-security review, specialist hiring, margin control on service work and the need to make analysis reproducible across teams. Outbound messages tend to land better when framed around a specific workflow bottleneck, such as shortening procurement evidence packs, improving auditability, reducing manual handovers or supporting repeat delivery, rather than broad claims about growth or digital maturity.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
