Healthtech Companies in the UK: 600+ Active Firms (2026)
Healthtech companies in the UK build regulated digital health, medical software and device technologies for care providers and patients.
Buying centres concentrate around clinical workflow, diagnostics and monitoring, patient access, revenue or capacity management, and infrastructure for regulated health deployments. Sales motions tend to be B2B or B2B2C, with buyers split between care providers, life sciences organisations, commissioners, insurers, employers and patient-facing channels. Typical engagements are rarely casual software purchases: suppliers often need clinical safety processes, evidence generation, security review, interoperability work and accessibility testing before wider roll-out. The better-matched firms for this list are scale-up or mid-market operators with measurable turnover, specialist clinical and technical teams, and enough compliance capacity to sell into public and private healthcare buyers.
At 655 actively trading companies, the UK healthtech cohort is a specialist slice of the wider life sciences economy rather than a substitute for it. Reported headcount totals 2,256 people, pointing to a market with many small suppliers alongside a smaller revenue-bearing group. The commercial mix appears uneven: mature regulated vendors sit beside early commercial entrants still working through clinical evidence, procurement access and integration into care pathways.
The MHRA regulates the UK medical devices market, so healthtech vendors that fall into medical device or software-as-a-medical-device territory face a different operating burden from administrative software suppliers. Medical devices, including in vitro diagnostics, custom-made devices and systems or procedure packs, must be registered with the MHRA before they are placed on the Great Britain market; non-UK manufacturers must appoint a UK responsible person. Adoption by public healthcare buyers in England also tends to require digital technology assessment against clinical safety, data protection, technical security, interoperability, usability and accessibility criteria, alongside medical device certification or ICO registration where relevant.
Scale-up outcomes appear likely to hinge on procurement credibility rather than broad demand alone. Buyers tend to favour tools that reduce clinical or operational friction without adding integration work for overstretched teams, while suppliers need evidence, security assurance and clear accountability for patient safety. The cohort has enough early-commercial weight to keep experimentation visible, but scarcity of revenue-bearing firms suggests uneven progression from pilot use to repeatable deployment. Consolidation remains plausible where adjacent vendors need broader routes into care settings, though narrow clinical workflow tools may persist as independent specialists.

Key facts
About 8% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (56 of 655 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
10% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (70 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Medical devices in Great Britain are regulated under the Medical Devices Regulations 2002 and must be registered with the MHRA before being placed on the market.
Non-UK manufacturers must appoint a UK responsible person, making regulatory representation part of market access for overseas suppliers.
England’s public health service uses the Digital Technology Assessment Criteria for clinical safety, data protection, technical security, interoperability, usability and accessibility.
The wider UK life sciences sector had 7,320 companies, 359,600 employees and £146.9 billion turnover in 2023/2024; medical technology accounted for 4,360 companies, 196,000 employees and £48.0 billion.
The UK public health service spends an estimated £10 billion a year on medtech, tying buyer access to procurement as well as compliance.

How UK healthtech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Healthtech firms usually earn through subscription software, annual licences, implementation fees, support retainers and, where connected devices or diagnostics are involved, hardware margin or usage-based charges. Pricing often follows the deployed unit: per site, per clinician, per patient pathway, per test, or per monitored population. Many vendors start with paid pilots or limited departmental deployments, then try to convert into multi-site contracts once clinical safety, information governance and interoperability work is complete. Services revenue can be material in earlier stages because configuration, evidence packs, workflow mapping and training are often required before recurring revenue becomes repeatable.
Who they sell to
Most sell to healthcare providers, commissioners, life sciences teams, insurers, employers or patient-access channels, with buying committees rather than single budget holders. Typical sponsors include clinical directors, chief medical officers, chief information officers, operations leads, procurement teams, finance directors, information governance leads and clinical safety officers. Smaller private-sector deals may close through direct sales after a pilot, while public healthcare buyers in England tend to require framework access, assurance reviews, formal procurement and referenceable deployments. Sales cycles are usually months rather than weeks, especially where the product touches clinical workflow, patient data, diagnostic output or care capacity planning.
What they buy
Most healthtech firms tend to spend on security, cloud infrastructure, data engineering, interoperability work, product analytics, CRM, billing, customer support, implementation tooling and compliance operations. Regulated suppliers also buy legal advice, clinical safety support, quality management consulting, penetration testing, accessibility audits, privacy review, insurance and regulatory affairs support. Companies moving from pilot to repeat deployment often need recruitment for clinical implementation, product management, customer success, data science and healthcare sales. Marketing spend is typically more evidence-led than brand-led, with demand generation built around case studies, procurement materials, clinical proof points and conference presence rather than broad consumer advertising.
Why and how to sell to them
Healthtech buyers tend to evaluate vendors when pilots are becoming hard to manage manually, a new public or private healthcare contract raises assurance demands, or a product moves closer to MHRA-relevant medical device territory. Other useful triggers include fresh funding, senior clinical or technical hires, expansion from one care setting into several, new information governance requirements, and growing support volumes after deployment. Effective outbound usually connects the offer to a specific source of friction: reducing assurance workload, making integrations less bespoke, improving evidence collection, shortening implementation, lowering support burden, or helping commercial teams convert pilots into repeatable contracts.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
