Groundworks Companies in the UK: 12,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Groundworks companies in the UK prepare sites, install drainage and foundations, and deliver hard and soft landscaping.
Buying decisions tend to sit with procurement, commercial and project-management teams at main contractors, housebuilders, civil-engineering businesses, local authorities and commercial estate developers. Packages are usually priced as project work, with estimating, plant coordination and site supervision carrying much of the commercial risk once mobilisation starts. Customer mix skews B2B and public sector, while residential work often flows through housebuilding and principal-contractor relationships. Engagements are lumpy and programme-led, so contractor scale is better read through turnover visibility, plant access and project-management capacity than through headcount alone.
12,945 groundworks and landscaping contractors are actively trading in the UK, creating a sizeable long tail rather than a narrow specialist-contractor universe. Reported employment totals 3,389 people, which points to many firms being owner-managed, subcontract-led or light on disclosed payroll even where projects require on-site labour. Turnover at the upper end is concentrated in a smaller band, while recent incorporations add churn at the local-contracting end. That mix leaves researchers with a market split between established regional civil-engineering suppliers and newer firms chasing housing, commercial and public-realm packages.
No single sector-specific regulator defines the groundworks market; obligations tend to come through the construction project rather than through a dedicated licence. Contract terms usually push responsibility for programme, defects, utilities coordination, spoil removal, drainage sign-off and site reinstatement into subcontract packages. Public-sector and infrastructure work adds procurement scrutiny and a tighter paper trail around method statements, risk assessments and handover evidence. Residential and commercial clients bring a different pressure point: changes in sequence or access can move cost from the main contractor to the groundworks package unless variation processes are clear.
Future demand appears tied less to new firm formation than to which contractors can manage project risk without carrying too much unrecovered mobilisation cost. Buyers tend to favour firms that can price ground conditions, drainage interfaces and programme changes clearly, because small errors become visible once follow-on trades arrive. Scale-up scarcity is likely to persist: many operators can win local packages, but fewer have the estimating depth, plant coordination and contract administration needed for repeat work across regions. Consolidation may occur where regional contractors want broader geographic cover, although the market still looks suited to specialist subcontractors with close client relationships.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (119 of 12,945 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
25% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (3,301 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Groundworks contractors sit early in the construction chain, preparing sites before building and occupation works can proceed.
The segment spans civil engineering subcontractors, drainage and foundations specialists, and hard and soft landscaping providers.
Buyer comparisons need care where subcontracting, group structures or plant-heavy delivery models affect reported operating scale.

How UK groundworks companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Groundworks contractors earn revenue by turning construction drawings, ground conditions and programme requirements into delivered site works: excavation, drainage, foundations, roads, paving, surfacing, retaining structures and external landscaping. Commercial models are usually fixed-price packages, measure-and-value contracts, schedules of rates or dayworks for variations. Margin sits in estimating accuracy, plant utilisation, labour productivity, materials buying and the ability to recover changes once buried services, weather or access constraints affect the sequence. The offer is service-led rather than product-led, but it depends on physical assets, subcontract labour, bought-in aggregates, waste removal, transport and site supervision.
Who they sell to
Most sell into construction supply chains rather than to end consumers. Typical customers include principal contractors, housebuilders, commercial developers, civil-engineering firms, facilities owners and local authorities, with buying led by quantity surveyors, contracts managers, project managers, commercial directors and procurement teams. Smaller jobs may be won through repeat local relationships, while public-sector, infrastructure and larger private schemes tend to involve frameworks, tender portals, pre-qualification questionnaires and formal bid packs. Sales cycles are tied to planning, funding and main-contract award, so opportunities can sit dormant before moving quickly when mobilisation dates are fixed.
What they buy
Most groundworks firms tend to spend on tools that reduce site and commercial leakage: estimating software, job costing, contract management, document control, health and safety systems, fleet and plant tracking, payroll, accounting, purchase ordering and workforce scheduling. Larger regional contractors may also buy CRM, bid-management support, cyber security, HR systems, insurance advice, training, recruitment, fuel cards, telematics, legal services and outsourced finance support. Physical procurement matters as much as software, with recurring demand for plant hire, aggregates, concrete, drainage products, surfacing materials, personal protective equipment, waste services and transport capacity.
Why and how to sell to them
Groundworks buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when tender volume rises, margins narrow, plant utilisation becomes harder to control, or contract administration starts absorbing project managers’ time. Useful triggers include framework wins, new estimating hires, expansion into adjacent regions, larger housing or infrastructure packages, finance-team appointments and visible investment in plant or depot capacity. Outbound messages usually land better when they connect to programme risk, variation recovery, cash collection, compliance evidence or labour scheduling rather than generic productivity claims. The commercial angle should be practical: fewer missed costs, clearer site records, shorter month-end reconciliation, or better visibility before a job overruns.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
