Machinery Companies in the UK: 8,223 Active Firms (2026)
Industrial machinery companies design, manufacture, distribute and service equipment for production, processing and materials handling in the UK.
Buying decisions usually sit with operations, engineering, procurement and maintenance teams rather than a single technology buyer. The main pools are processing equipment for manufacturers, materials-handling systems for warehouses and industrial sites, factory automation, specialist components, and service-led maintenance or installation providers. Customers tend to be business and public infrastructure operators with capital approval processes, site constraints and safety documentation requirements. Engagements are often project-based, followed by spares, servicing and inspection work; distributors and integrators therefore matter as much as original manufacturers, especially where imported equipment needs GB documentation before use.
Across the UK, 8,223 industrial machinery firms are actively trading, a sizeable base but not a uniformly scaled one. Turnover concentration is visible: 1,218 have more than £5M in reported turnover, while 553 were incorporated since 2022. Reported employment totals 7,485 people, giving the cohort a visible operational footprint even though many suppliers remain project, distribution or service businesses rather than large manufacturing sites. The result is a market with a long tail of specialist providers, alongside a smaller group able to support plant-level procurement, installation and maintenance work for industrial customers.
GB market access is shaped by the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations before equipment is placed on the market or put into service. Manufacturers, importers, distributors and installers need conformity assessment, a technical file, relevant marking, English instructions and a Declaration of Conformity or Incorporation where applicable. HSE guidance places most new machinery within this regime, with HSE and local trading standards sharing enforcement depending on field of use. gov.uk guidance also keeps CE marking recognition available indefinitely for many goods in Great Britain, alongside UKCA routes where applicable.
Replacement cycles appear tied to plant utilisation, safety compliance and the cost of downtime rather than discretionary software-style adoption. That tends to favour suppliers with field-service capacity, documentation discipline and access to spares, while smaller specialists may find procurement thresholds harder to meet. Automation and materials handling demand should keep attention on integrators, but buyers are likely to remain cautious where payback depends on site-specific labour savings. Consolidation looks more plausible among distributors, service providers and component specialists than among bespoke equipment makers with narrow technical niches.

Key facts
About 14% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (1,218 of 8,223 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
6% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (553 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Industrial machinery supplied in Great Britain is principally governed by the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, with conformity assessment, a declaration of conformity and the relevant conformity marking required before machinery can be placed on the GB market.
HSE says most new machinery must be designed and constructed to be safe, have a technical file, appropriate conformity marking, English instructions, and a Declaration of Conformity or Incorporation.
CE marking recognition for many goods has been extended indefinitely in GB, allowing either CE or UKCA markings beyond 31 December 2024 where applicable.
Machinery and equipment represents 7.0% of UK manufacturing value added, 6.1% of manufacturing employment and 10.3% of manufacturing exports.
The UK was the 10th largest global exporter of machinery and equipment goods in 2022, with a 2.6% global market share.

How UK Machinery companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a mix of capital equipment sales, distribution margin, installation fees and recurring aftercare. Machinery suppliers quote around the asset, the production line or the site visit, rather than a standard seat price. Larger jobs often include design input, commissioning, operator training and acceptance testing, with spares, inspection and maintenance forming the repeat revenue stream. Smaller component and consumables orders may run through catalogues or reseller channels, while bespoke equipment tends to involve engineering review, site surveys and payment milestones linked to build, delivery and sign-off.
Who they sell to
Typical customers are manufacturers, logistics operators, utilities, construction-materials producers and public infrastructure bodies with production or handling assets on site. Buying groups tend to include operations directors, plant managers, engineering managers, maintenance leads, procurement and finance, with health and safety teams involved where equipment changes the risk profile. Spares and repairs can close through direct ordering or an approved distributor, but new systems usually pass through capex approval, supplier onboarding and technical review. Sales cycles are therefore uneven: short for replacement parts, longer where site access, performance guarantees or tender rules apply.
What they buy
Most machinery firms tend to spend on tools that help them manage engineered products, projects and service obligations. Common categories include CRM, quoting and configuration software, ERP or MRP systems, inventory and spares management, field-service scheduling, quality management, document control, CAD and product lifecycle management, finance, payroll and HR. Firms handling connected equipment may also buy data storage, remote monitoring, cyber security and support-desk tooling. Non-software spend often covers recruitment for engineers and technicians, health and safety training, technical writing, certification support, insurance, logistics and accountancy.
Why and how to sell to them
Machinery buyers tend to evaluate vendors when operational friction is visible: quote turnaround is slow, spares availability is weak, field engineers are under-scheduled, or compliance paperwork delays shipment and commissioning. Other triggers include a new plant project, an automation programme, a distributor change, senior operations hire, acquisition, or expansion into GB supply where marking and declarations need tidying up. Outbound angles work better when they tie to downtime, warranty cost, margin leakage, audit readiness or service response times. Generic productivity claims usually land less well than evidence tied to an engineer, asset or site workflow.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
