Machinery Companies in Cambridge: 67 Active Firms (2026)
Machinery companies in Cambridge design, supply and service industrial equipment for manufacturing, production and regulated workplaces.
Procurement usually sits with operations, engineering, facilities and compliance teams rather than a single software-style buyer. Demand comes from manufacturers, research sites, construction contractors and industrial workplaces that need equipment to fit into existing production lines, safety cases and maintenance regimes. Sales therefore tend to be consultative and project-based. Engagements range from replacement-kit purchases and scheduled servicing to installation projects that need training, spares and conformity evidence. Smaller buyers may want a dependable supplier for repairs and maintenance, while mid-market industrial customers tend to expect documentation and support over the equipment lifecycle.
Cambridge has 67 actively trading machinery companies, making this a compact local cohort rather than a broad manufacturing base. Reported employment across Cambridge machinery employers totals 1,318 people, which suggests the market includes more than owner-managed distributors or repair shops. The commercial centre of gravity is likely to sit with specialist equipment suppliers, service operators and engineering-led manufacturers serving laboratories, factories, building sites and regulated workplaces across the wider area.
Machinery placed on the GB market sits under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations, with duties around essential health and safety requirements, conformity assessment, technical documentation, English instructions, and a Declaration of Conformity or Incorporation. CE and UKCA markings both remain relevant in GB where applicable. HSE says most new machinery falls within this regime, while enforcement can sit with HSE or local trading standards depending on field of use. The Department for Business and Trade owns legislation and policy. For Cambridge suppliers, the practical issue is maintaining the paperwork trail that lets equipment move from design, to sale, to workplace use.
Demand appears tied to maintenance cycles, safety compliance and incremental automation rather than speculative capacity expansion. Cambridge’s mix of research, engineering and workplace operations should favour suppliers that can adapt machinery for specialised settings and support it after installation. The cohort also looks relatively mature, with limited evidence of a broad new-company wave, so consolidation may come through service coverage, niche capability and customer access rather than a large influx of new entrants. Margin pressure is likely where imported equipment, certification work and field-service labour all sit in the same contract.

Key facts
About 17% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (12 of 67 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
5% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (4 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Industrial machinery supplied in Great Britain is principally governed by the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, covering essential health and safety requirements, conformity assessment, a declaration of conformity and conformity marking.
CE marking recognition for many goods has been extended indefinitely in Great Britain, allowing either CE or UKCA markings beyond 31 December 2024 where applicable.
The UK machinery and equipment sector represents 7.0% of UK manufacturing value added, 6.1% of manufacturing employment and 10.3% of manufacturing exports.
Sector value added has followed a -0.4% compound annual growth rate since the 2008-2009 financial crisis, compared with +1.3% for UK manufacturing overall.
The UK was the tenth-largest global exporter of machinery and equipment goods in 2022, exporting US$42 billion and holding a 2.6% global market share.

How Cambridge machinery companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Cambridge machinery firms usually earn from a mix of equipment sales, custom build or modification work, installation, commissioning, spares, repair visits and planned maintenance contracts. Some may add hire, rental or operator training where machinery is costly, mobile or safety-sensitive. Pricing tends to follow the job: quoted capital purchases for new equipment, day-rate or call-out charges for service work, margin on replacement parts, and retainer-style agreements for scheduled maintenance. The product is rarely just a machine; it is often a package of drawings, manuals, risk information, training records and after-sales support that has to fit the customer’s site and operating process.
Who they sell to
Most buyers are industrial or technical organisations rather than consumers: manufacturers, engineering workshops, laboratories, construction operators, facilities teams and other workplaces that need machinery to run or maintain physical operations. The named contact may be an operations director, engineering manager, maintenance manager, facilities manager, health and safety lead or procurement manager, with finance involved when the purchase becomes a capital approval. Smaller jobs can move through direct enquiry and supplier relationships, while larger or public-sector-linked purchases tend to involve tenders, framework buying or multi-stage technical reviews. Sales cycles are usually longer where installation, training, safety documentation and downtime planning sit in the same decision.
What they buy
Most machinery firms tend to spend on systems and services that help them quote accurately, manage stock, schedule field work and maintain documentation. Common categories include ERP and MRP, CRM, quoting and configuration tools, inventory and spare-parts management, field-service scheduling, quality management, product lifecycle management, CAD data control, health and safety records, accounting, payroll and basic analytics. Service spend often goes to certification advice, technical writing, engineering recruitment, logistics, insurance, legal support, marketing, website development and outsourced fabrication or machining. Firms with mobile engineers also need devices, vehicle management, cloud hosting, cyber security and communications tools that work away from the office.
Why and how to sell to them
Machinery buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when a service backlog builds, parts availability becomes difficult, a new installation creates documentation work, or a customer starts asking for better evidence around safety and conformity. Other triggers include new premises, workshop expansion, a senior operations hire, a larger tender, acquisition activity or a move from reactive repairs into planned service contracts. Outbound messages usually land better when they attach to downtime, quote accuracy, first-time fix rates, stock visibility, audit trails or engineering labour constraints. Generic productivity claims are less persuasive than showing how a tool or service fits a workshop, field-service or compliance workflow.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
