Market Research Companies in Leeds: 69 Active Firms (2026)
Market research companies gather, analyse and report customer, market and brand evidence for clients across Leeds and its metropolitan economy.
Buying centres tend to sit with insight, marketing, strategy, customer experience and policy teams rather than a single procurement function. Leeds providers appear to sell mainly to B2B, public sector and non-profit clients across the city region, often through project commissions, research panels, brand and customer tracking, or retained evidence support. Engagements are usually consultancy-led rather than platform-led, with small expert teams handling mixed-method research, survey design, data analytics, evidence synthesis and reporting. The commercial shape is therefore closer to professional services than software: repeat work matters, but each brief still depends on sector knowledge, respondent access and defensible interpretation.

Leeds has 69 actively trading market research and insights companies, making the local cohort a relatively compact part of the UK evidence and analytics market. Reported employment totals 190 people, which points to a base of small agencies and specialist consultancies rather than a city dominated by very large research employers. Only a small upper tier sits above £5M turnover, while a younger group incorporated since 2022 adds early-commercial capacity around surveys, customer insight, analytics and reporting. For researchers, that mix matters: local supply looks broad enough for buyer choice, but not so deep that procurement teams can assume many scaled agencies in each niche.
Market research and insights providers in the UK do not generally need a sector-specific operating licence, but the operating context is shaped by professional standards and data protection duties. The Market Research Society is the main UK professional body, and its Code of Conduct covers research, insight and data analytics practice, participant wellbeing, representative-sample reporting and co-operation with investigations. Where projects use identifiable information about living people, providers need to work within UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act, with ICO guidance relevant to lawful bases, controller and processor roles, safeguards, and research or statistical-use exemptions. That makes governance a practical sales qualification, not just a compliance note.
The Leeds market appears likely to remain consultancy-heavy, with demand tied to customer evidence, local public-service evaluation and B2B decision support rather than large platform deployments. Smaller agencies tend to compete on method, sector familiarity and access to respondents, while the scarcer scaled operators are better placed for multi-workstream programmes and recurring tracking work. Regulatory pressure around personal data, sample quality and participant welfare has been pulling the sector towards clearer documentation and more explicit research governance. Consolidation may occur where owner-managed agencies need broader delivery capacity, although much of the market is likely to keep its specialist, project-led character.

Key facts
About 2% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (2 of 69 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
11% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (8 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UK market research and insights providers are not generally subject to a sector-specific operating licence, so UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the MRS Code of Conduct shape practice where identifiable participant data is used.
MRS estimates the UK research, insight and analytics industry at approaching £9 billion in value.
A newer MRS-commissioned review puts the wider research and evidence market at £18.74 billion in annual GVA, or 0.7% to 0.8% of UK GVA.
MRS describes the UK research and evidence market as the second-largest supplier of research services globally.
Almost two-thirds (64%) of UK-based research and evidence businesses conduct projects for clients in other countries, with North America and Europe identified as primary export markets.

How Leeds market research companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue is usually earned through fixed-fee research projects, retained insight support, tracking studies and paid fieldwork management rather than licence-heavy recurring software. A typical brief packages research design, sampling, recruitment, moderation or survey scripting, analysis and client-ready reporting, with respondent incentives and specialist fieldwork sometimes passed through as costs. Larger assignments may add stakeholder workshops, evidence reviews, dashboards or ongoing programme management. Pricing tends to follow day rates, project fees or scheduled waves of work, so utilisation, repeat clients and field quality matter more than pure volume.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually insight, marketing, strategy, customer experience, communications and policy teams, with procurement more visible once tenders or public contracts are involved. Most small commercial briefs are sold through direct relationships, referrals and repeat account management; larger evaluations and multi-wave programmes tend to move through shortlists, preferred-supplier arrangements or formal RFPs. Decision-makers commonly include heads of insight, marketing directors, customer experience leads, policy managers and senior commissioners. Contract values vary by method and respondent difficulty, with cycles shortest for repeat tracking and longest where ethics, safeguarding, data processing and public scrutiny have to be agreed.
What they buy
Most market research firms tend to spend on tools and services that reduce fieldwork risk and speed up analysis without weakening research governance. Common categories include survey scripting, panel and sample access, respondent recruitment, transcription, translation, qualitative analysis, statistical software, data visualisation, secure file sharing, consent management and project scheduling. They also buy CRM, proposal support, finance systems, billing, HR, freelancer management, cyber security, privacy advice and professional indemnity support. Agencies with more public or regulated-sector work usually care more about audit trails, data retention, accessibility and evidence version control than cosmetic reporting features.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when agencies win a retained tracking account, add a new research operations lead, take on more public evaluation work, build a respondent community, or move from founder-led delivery to account teams. Pain points are practical: fixed-fee scope creep, difficult recruitment, uneven response quality, data-protection checks, slow reporting cycles and too much manual reconciliation between survey, analysis and finance workflows. Sellers usually get further by linking their pitch to margin protection, defensible methodology, participant handling and faster client sign-off, rather than promising generic productivity gains. Evidence of how a service fits existing research workflows matters.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
