Private Credit Companies in the UK: 400+ Active Firms (2026)
Private credit companies arrange non-bank lending to businesses and assets, within the UK alternative-investment market.
Demand tends to sit with institutional allocators, private funds, professional borrowers and portfolio-company finance teams, rather than mass-market consumers. The main buying centres are fund management, loan origination, credit servicing and specialist advisory work for corporate or asset-backed lending. Engagements are usually high-touch and document-heavy: borrower due diligence, covenant monitoring, valuation governance and investor reporting matter as much as sourcing the loan. Many firms look like lean investment partnerships, with specialist credit, risk, legal and operations roles, while the larger platforms sell into repeat institutional mandates and regulated private-markets channels.
The UK has 442 private credit firms actively trading, a small cohort by company count but one with a financial-services rather than local-services profile. Reported employment totals 681 people, consistent with specialist investment, servicing and advisory teams rather than labour-intensive operations. Scale is uneven: 36 firms report turnover above £5M, while 52 were incorporated since 2022. That mix points to a market with a modest number of established platforms, a visible layer of newer managers and advisers, and many businesses that remain closely held around investment teams.
UK private credit and direct lending generally sit inside the financial-services perimeter for alternative fund managers, fund marketing and conduct, rather than under a standalone private-credit permission. The FCA’s AIFMD framework covers management, administration and marketing of alternative investment funds, including authorisation or registration, conduct of business, conflicts, remuneration, risk management, valuation, disclosure, regulatory capital, depositaries and custody, delegation and leverage. Recent FCA attention in private markets has centred on valuation governance, conflicts of interest, liquidity transparency and proportionate oversight, reflecting concern about investor protection and systemic-risk build-up.
Manager formation appears selective rather than broad-based, with new entrants more likely to be specialist advisers, servicing firms or niche credit managers than universal lending platforms. The scarcer scale-up layer should keep institutional distribution, valuation process and portfolio reporting as key differentiators, but FCA scrutiny may also raise the operating threshold for smaller managers. Consolidation looks more plausible in servicing, origination partnerships and back-office functions than in the core investment mandate, where track record and mandate fit tend to matter more than administrative scale.

Key facts
About 8% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (36 of 442 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
11% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (52 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UK private credit is generally regulated through the financial-services perimeter around fund managers and marketing, rather than through a standalone private-credit licence.
Under UK AIFMD, the FCA covers management, administration and marketing of alternative investment funds, including rules on conflicts, valuation, disclosure, delegation and leverage.
FCA private-markets supervision has recently emphasised valuation governance, conflicts of interest, liquidity transparency and proportionate oversight for alternative fund managers.
UK private markets are approaching £1.2 trillion in assets under management, with fundraising of £58.7 billion last year and private capital investment of £25 billion into more than 1,400 UK businesses.
Non-banks and market-based finance account for around half of UK and global financial-sector assets and contributed nearly all of the c.£425 billion net increase in lending to UK businesses from 2008 to 2023.

How UK private credit companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Private credit firms earn revenue from managing capital, arranging loans, servicing credit books and advising on specialist lending. Fund managers typically charge asset-based management fees and may earn performance fees where returns exceed agreed hurdles. Origination and advisory businesses are more likely to price through retainers, arrangement fees, monitoring fees or success-linked fees tied to a completed financing. The product is not just capital; it is credit judgement, documentation, covenant design, valuation discipline and ongoing borrower oversight. Engagements tend to be bespoke, with pricing anchored to assets, commitments, loan volume or mandate complexity rather than seat-based software-style contracts.
Who they sell to
Private credit sellers usually deal with institutional allocators, advisers, pension and insurance decision-makers, corporate CFOs, treasurers, private-equity operating teams and portfolio-company finance directors. Borrower-side opportunities tend to be relationship-led, with lenders assessing cash flow, asset cover, ownership structure and covenant tolerance before term sheets progress. Investor-side mandates usually move through consultants, direct manager meetings, due-diligence questionnaires and investment committee approval. Sales cycles are typically measured in months rather than weeks, and the commercial buyer is rarely alone: legal, risk, tax, operations and compliance teams often influence whether a mandate, facility or servicing contract proceeds.
What they buy
Most private credit firms tend to spend on systems and services that reduce operational friction around deals, documents, reporting and oversight. Relevant categories include CRM for origination teams, loan administration, covenant monitoring, portfolio analytics, valuation workflow, investor reporting, document management, cyber security, KYC and AML tooling, audit support, fund accounting, tax advice and specialist legal work. Firms with larger books may also need cloud hosting, data warehousing, integrations between front-office and finance systems, and outsourced operations for servicing or reporting. Recruitment pitches tend to land where credit underwriting, fund operations, compliance or investor-relations capacity is visibly stretched.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying triggers often appear when a manager wins a new mandate, expands origination partnerships, prepares for a fundraising process, brings servicing in-house or faces a heavier reporting burden from investors. FCA focus on valuation governance, conflicts of interest and liquidity transparency gives sellers a credible route into risk, compliance and operations teams, provided the pitch is specific about evidence, controls and audit trails. Borrower-facing lenders may respond to offers that shorten diligence, monitor covenant drift or improve portfolio visibility. Generic productivity claims are less useful than showing how a tool or service reduces manual reconciliation, accelerates committee packs or lowers operational risk.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
