Alternative Lending Companies in London: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Alternative lending companies provide non-bank credit, crowdfunding and asset-finance services to borrowers, with this cohort based across London boroughs.
Buying centres tend to sit in finance, treasury, risk and operations teams, rather than in general procurement. The relevant buyers are usually looking for credit origination, underwriting, servicing, collections and payment workflows that can support SME lending, consumer finance, property-backed credit or investor-facing crowdfunding. Engagements are typically mid-market operating relationships rather than broking-only introductions: the provider needs permissions, credit decisioning, borrower communications and post-loan administration to work together. That makes the buying process closer to regulated financial infrastructure than to a simple marketplace or lead-generation model.

London has 161 actively trading alternative lending firms in this cohort. Reported headcount totals 532 people, giving the capital a compact but visible employment footprint in non-bank credit. Commercial maturity varies: 29 firms have more than £5M in turnover, while 16 were incorporated since 2022. The pattern points to a market with a limited set of higher-revenue operators, a wider group of smaller specialist lenders and platform models, and continued formation of new entrants despite the compliance burden attached to regulated credit and investor-facing finance.
UK alternative lending is not a unified licence category. The FCA explicitly regulates loan-based crowdfunding, also described as peer-to-peer lending, as well as investment-based crowdfunding. Payment permissions can also matter where crowdfunding models involve connected payment services. FCA guidance treats crowdfunding and peer-to-peer lending as “high-risk” investment activity, so platforms are expected to be authorised and to hold the correct permissions. Promotions are constrained too, particularly where retail investors are involved, with access generally limited to restricted, sophisticated or high-net-worth investors, or consumers who pass appropriateness checks.
Near-term development appears likely to be shaped less by pure origination growth than by funding access, loss performance and conduct scrutiny. The cohort tends to split between specialist lenders with operational credit infrastructure and smaller platforms still proving repeatable distribution. Where scale-up scarcity persists, consolidation or white-label servicing relationships may look more practical than standalone balance-sheet expansion. Retail-facing models also carry extra friction: appropriateness checks, financial-promotion limits and compensation-risk disclosures make customer acquisition more constrained than in ordinary software or brokerage markets.

Key facts
About 18% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (29 of 161 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
9% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (16 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Alternative lending is not a single licence category in the UK; loan-based crowdfunding, peer-to-peer lending and investment-based crowdfunding sit within FCA supervision where the relevant regulated activity is present.
The FCA treats crowdfunding and peer-to-peer lending as “high-risk” investment activities, with investor promotions limited to groups such as restricted, sophisticated or high-net-worth investors, or consumers who pass an appropriateness test.
FSCS protection generally does not apply if the underlying business or platform fails, which changes both investor disclosures and platform diligence.
CDFIs lent £141.6M to 5,825 enterprises in 2024, keeping community finance visible within the non-bank lending mix.
SME asset-finance new business increased 0.9% in 2024 to £23.5 billion, pointing to continued demand for secured business-credit products outside mainstream term lending.

How London alternative lending companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from interest spread, arrangement fees, servicing fees, platform charges and, for investor-facing models, administration or performance-linked fees. Some London alternative lenders lend from their own balance sheet; others match borrowers with institutional or retail capital, or provide white-label servicing for funders that want credit exposure without running day-to-day operations. The product is a mix of financial services and operating infrastructure: origination forms, affordability checks, credit models, payment handling, loan servicing, arrears management and reporting. Pricing is often tied to funded volume, outstanding balances or borrower fees, so suppliers need to understand unit economics as well as software adoption.
Who they sell to
Borrowers are typically SMEs, property borrowers, consumers or asset-backed borrowers, while investor-facing platforms also sell to lenders, funders and wealth-adjacent intermediaries. On the borrower side, decisions often sit with owner-managers, finance directors, property principals or brokers. On the funding side, treasury, credit, risk, legal and investment committees tend to matter more than a single commercial sponsor. Sales routes are mixed: direct origination, broker and introducer channels, embedded finance partnerships and funder relationships all appear. Higher-value relationships usually involve credit policy review, compliance checks and operational due diligence, so the buying cycle is closer to financial infrastructure procurement than a self-serve application.
What they buy
Most alternative lending firms tend to spend on loan origination software, credit decisioning tools, identity and fraud checks, affordability assessment, payment operations, servicing systems, collections workflow, CRM, analytics and management reporting. Regulated firms also buy compliance advice, legal support, audit, complaints handling, financial-promotion review and conduct-risk monitoring. Data and infrastructure needs sit underneath that: cloud hosting, data warehousing, cyber security, API connectivity, document management and finance or treasury tooling. Recruitment spend often follows credit, collections, risk, engineering and product roles rather than generic sales hiring. Providers that can fit into existing lending workflows usually have an easier route than those requiring a wholesale platform change.
Why and how to sell to them
Alternative lending buyers tend to evaluate vendors when funding lines change, arrears rise, credit losses need closer monitoring, a new loan product is launched, or FCA permissions and financial-promotion processes need review. Other triggers include broker-channel expansion, a move from manual underwriting to rules-based decisioning, new payment workflows, senior risk or operations hires, and pressure to evidence fair treatment of borrowers. Outbound messaging usually lands better when it speaks to cost per originated loan, time to decision, audit trails, collections control, fraud reduction or funder reporting. Generic growth claims are less useful than showing how the offer reduces operational drag while preserving credit and compliance oversight.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
