Alternative Lending Companies in the UK: 490 Active Firms (2026)
Alternative lending companies provide non-bank credit, crowdfunding and asset-finance routes for UK borrowers and investors.
Buying centres tend to sit in credit, finance and risk teams rather than general procurement, with separate motions for SME working-capital providers, asset-finance brokers, borrower marketplaces and investor platforms. Customer relationships are usually B2B or investor-facing, often mediated by commercial-finance intermediaries, accountants or sector specialists. Engagements are measured around facilities, origination volume, servicing duties and reporting obligations rather than seat-based software spend. The operational core is digital underwriting, risk scoring, collections workflow and investor reporting, so buying decisions often involve credit policy, compliance and finance operations alongside commercial teams.

The UK cohort contains 490 actively trading alternative lending companies, including 70 with turnover above £5M and 48 incorporated since 2022. Reported employment totals 935 people, so the operating footprint looks broad but lightly staffed: many firms appear to run lending, brokerage or platform operations without large employee bases. That shape is consistent with digital origination, outsourced servicing, broker-led distribution and capital-light marketplace models, though the revenue threshold shows there is also a mid-market layer rather than only experimental platforms.
UK rules attach to the lending or investment activity rather than to a standalone alternative-lending label. The FCA regulates loan-based crowdfunding, peer-to-peer lending and investment-based crowdfunding, and connected payment services can bring donation or rewards models into scope. Its guidance treats crowdfunding and peer-to-peer lending as “high-risk” investment activity: platforms need the right permissions, investors are expected to check authorisation on the public register, and promotions are limited to restricted, sophisticated or high-net-worth investors, or to consumers who pass appropriateness checks. Protection is also thinner than in deposit-style products if the borrowing business or platform fails.
Further maturation appears likely to favour lenders that can evidence credit performance, investor governance and borrower-service controls through a full cycle. Early-commercial operators may find distribution harder where brokers, advisers and investors prefer platforms with a visible track record and clearer permissioning. Consolidation tends to follow that pattern: servicing books, broker relationships and underwriting tools can be folded into better-capitalised platforms without much public fanfare. The sector may therefore look less like a wave of new marketplaces and more like a sorting process between regulated, operationally disciplined lenders and narrower referral or brokerage businesses.

Key facts
About 14% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (70 of 490 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
9% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (48 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Alternative lending is not a single UK licence category; FCA permissions depend on the lending, crowdfunding, investment or payment activity being carried out.
The FCA treats crowdfunding and peer-to-peer lending as “high-risk” investment activity, with platforms expected to be authorised and hold the permissions that match their model.
FSCS protection generally does not apply if the underlying business or platform fails, while promotions can be limited to restricted, sophisticated or high-net-worth investors or consumers who pass an appropriateness test.
CDFIs lent £141.6M to 5,825 enterprises in 2024.
SME asset-finance new business reached £23.5 billion in 2024, up 0.9%.

How UK Alternative Lending companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Alternative lenders earn from the movement and servicing of credit rather than from seat licences. Revenue usually comes through interest margin, origination fees, broker commission, servicing charges, platform fees, or a share of investor returns. Some firms put their own balance sheet at risk; others arrange, distribute or service loans funded by institutions, private investors or specialist vehicles. The product is therefore part financial contract and part operating system: application capture, eligibility checks, underwriting, documentation, drawdown, repayments, collections and reporting. Pricing tends to follow facility size, drawn volume, assets financed or loans serviced, so commercial conversations often start with origination economics and loss performance.
Who they sell to
Borrowers are usually SMEs, owner-managed businesses, property or asset-backed borrowers, and finance intermediaries looking for faster or more flexible credit than a bank process may allow. Investor-facing platforms sell to private investors, professional investors or institutions, with FCA promotion rules shaping who can be approached. Decision-makers typically include founders, finance directors, CFOs, credit heads, brokers, accountants and, for larger relationships, risk and compliance teams. Sales cycles vary: repeat working-capital products can be relatively short, while institutional funding lines, servicing mandates and asset-finance partnerships usually involve due diligence, credit policy review, legal negotiation and board-level sign-off.
What they buy
Most alternative lending firms tend to spend on tools that reduce friction between application, underwriting, funding and repayment. Relevant categories include loan origination software, borrower portals, broker management, risk scoring, affordability checks, fraud screening, collections workflow, payment operations, investor reporting, CRM, analytics and finance reconciliation. Regulated or investor-facing firms also buy compliance support, legal advice, audit, cyber security, document management and training around financial promotions and customer communications. Lean teams often outsource specialist work, so accountancy, servicing, call handling, recruitment, performance marketing and data-engineering services can fit where the lender wants to preserve headcount while keeping credit and compliance control in-house.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent tends to appear when origination volumes rise, a new funding line is agreed, arrears require closer monitoring, or a platform moves from referral activity into regulated lending or investment distribution. Leadership changes in credit, risk, finance or compliance can also reopen vendor choices, particularly where manual processes are limiting approvals or audit trails. Sellers usually need to speak in operating and risk terms rather than generic productivity claims: lower rework in underwriting, clearer broker performance, faster borrower decisions, cleaner investor reporting, better collections evidence, and fewer compliance gaps. Proof points should map to loan volumes, loss controls, servicing cost and FCA-facing governance.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
