Private Credit Companies in London: 200+ Active Firms (2026)
Private credit companies provide non-bank loans and direct lending to businesses, with London teams serving UK and cross-border borrowers.
Origination desks, portfolio-management teams and investor-reporting functions set much of the shape of this market, rather than a single product-led sales motion. London operators tend to sell into corporate borrowers, private-equity sponsor channels, institutional investors and fund platforms, with relationships weighted towards repeat mandates and portfolio servicing. Engagements are usually mandate-level rather than transactional: credit assessment, structuring, valuation, servicing and reporting sit together, so buyers look for governance, covenant monitoring and specialist risk capacity as much as loan execution. The commercial model usually follows lending activity, management fees, servicing fees or fund-administration work.

London has 252 actively trading companies in this private-credit cohort, a small specialist layer within the capital’s wider financial-services market. Reported employment totals 556 people, which fits a model where balance-sheet scale, fund mandates and outsourced administration can matter more than large payrolls. The operating base is concentrated around relationship-led origination, underwriting, portfolio monitoring and investor reporting, with teams serving UK borrowers and cross-border structures from the same office platform. The result is a market that looks relatively lean by headcount, even where the underlying lending or assets serviced may be far larger than the staff base suggests.
Regulation sits around the activity rather than a standalone private-credit authorisation. The FCA perimeter typically reaches London direct-lending firms through alternative fund management, marketing and related servicing roles, with UK AIFMD setting requirements for authorisation or registration, conduct, conflicts, remuneration, risk management, valuation, disclosure, regulatory capital, custody, delegation and leverage. FCA private-markets supervision emphasises valuation governance, conflicts of interest, liquidity transparency and proportionate oversight. That matters for researchers because otherwise similar firms can sit in different regulatory positions depending on whether they manage funds, advise, administer, market to investors or service portfolios.
Further development appears likely to be shaped less by broad borrower demand than by governance capacity, institutional investor scrutiny and the cost of specialist credit talent. The London cohort tends to favour experienced teams, relationship-led origination and repeat sponsor or adviser channels, which can make newer entrants commercially credible before they look large on payroll. Scale-up scarcity may persist because fund management permissions, valuation discipline and portfolio monitoring are not easy to industrialise. Consolidation could come through servicing, administration and mandate acquisition, while managers with weak disclosure or conflict controls may find investor due diligence less forgiving.

Key facts
About 9% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (24 of 252 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
13% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (35 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Private credit is regulated mainly through the financial-services perimeter around fund managers and marketing rather than a standalone private-credit licence.
The FCA’s AIFMD framework covers the management, administration and marketing of alternative investment funds, including valuation, disclosure, delegation and leverage requirements.
UK private markets are approaching £1.2 trillion in assets under management, with private capital investment of £25 billion into more than 1,400 UK businesses.
From 2008 to 2023, non-banks and market-based finance contributed nearly all of the c.£425 billion net increase in lending to UK businesses.
The Bank of England and FCA frame private markets as cross-border and data-limited, with oversight work involving IOSCO and the Financial Stability Board.

How London private credit companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue is usually tied to assets, loans or mandates rather than seat licences. Private-credit firms earn through arrangement or origination fees on lending, management fees on funds, servicing fees on portfolios, and sometimes performance-linked economics where investor mandates allow it. The work is service-heavy even when the balance sheet is financial: teams package borrower diligence, negotiate covenants, price risk, monitor credit quality and produce investor-facing reporting. Pricing tends to sit in basis points, retainers or mandate fees, so buying decisions often follow portfolio growth, a new fund vehicle, or a larger servicing burden rather than a simple user-count expansion.
Who they sell to
Borrowers, sponsors and institutional allocators sit on different sides of the buying map. Corporate borrowers usually involve the CFO, treasurer, owner-manager or adviser; sponsor-led lending runs through private-equity deal teams, investment directors and portfolio-company finance leaders; investor-facing mandates tend to involve CIOs, heads of private markets, risk committees and procurement teams. Sales cycles are rarely self-serve. Smaller borrower facilities can move through relationship channels and adviser referrals, while fund commitments, administration mandates and servicing arrangements more often involve RFPs, due-diligence questionnaires, investment committees and legal review. Typical contracts are scrutinised for process discipline as much as price.
What they buy
Private-credit operators tend to spend on tools and services that reduce friction between origination, underwriting and ongoing surveillance. Common software needs include CRM for sponsor and borrower relationships, deal-flow tracking, document management, credit-workflow systems, portfolio monitoring, covenant tracking, valuation support, fund accounting, investor reporting and regulatory reporting. Security, access control, cloud hosting and audit trails matter because borrower packs and investor materials contain sensitive financial information. Service spend often goes to legal counsel, tax structuring, audit, outsourced fund administration, valuation advisers, specialist recruitment and marketing support for capital raising. Many teams also buy market intelligence to benchmark pricing, sectors and borrower risk.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent tends to appear when a fund closes, a lending mandate expands, a senior hire joins origination or risk, or portfolio monitoring starts to outgrow spreadsheets and email. Pain points are usually operational rather than theoretical: slower borrower diligence, inconsistent covenant evidence, valuation challenges, investor DDQ burden, conflict management and FCA-facing documentation under UK AIFMD. Outbound works better when it links to a recognisable trigger, such as launch-stage infrastructure, a move into larger borrowers, or a shift from adviser-led processes to in-house monitoring. Credible angles focus on auditability, time saved for senior credit staff, cleaner investor reporting and fewer manual hand-offs.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
