Publishing Companies in Cambridge: 66 Active Firms (2026)
Publishing companies in Cambridge commission, edit and distribute books, magazines and digital publications for UK and export audiences.
Buying centres tend to sit around editorial commissioning, production management, rights and licensing, subscriptions, advertising sales and export distribution rather than one uniform procurement function. Cambridge-area publishers typically sell to academic and professional readers, institutions, retailers, subscription audiences and specialist-interest communities, with B2B, consumer and public-sector-adjacent demand often sitting in the same catalogue. Engagements are usually narrower than in national media groups: a journal list, education imprint, membership title, rights package or digital-periodical workflow, supported by editorial, production, sales and format-management staff.

Cambridge has 66 actively trading publishing companies in this list, making the local cohort small enough for manual review but broad enough to cover academic, professional, consumer and specialist-interest publishing models. Reported employment totals 174 staff; all 52 firms that report headcount show at least some employee footprint, so the visible workforce is not confined to a small group of larger operators. The shape is consistent with a city whose publishing activity is tied to academic, professional and specialist content production, rather than only high-street retail book publishing.
UK book and magazine publishing does not sit under a sector-wide licensing regulator in the way financial services or utilities do. The more practical statutory point is legal deposit: gov.uk guidance requires UK published print works to be deposited with legal deposit libraries, with non-print works also covered under the Legal Deposit Libraries (Non-Print Works) Regulations. For trade representation, the Publishers Association covers publishing, while the Professional Publishers Association covers consumer magazine and business media publishers. That leaves market structure shaped less by authorisation and more by rights management, deposit compliance, subscriptions, advertising, licensing and export channels.
Scale-up scarcity appears likely to keep the Cambridge cohort specialised rather than media-conglomerate shaped. Newer entrants tend to look like editorially led micro-publishers, digital-periodical operators or niche professional-content houses, while larger publishers appear more exposed to rights sales, subscriptions and institutional renewals. Cost pressure in print, audio conversion and digital production is likely to favour businesses that can reuse editorial assets across formats. Consolidation may remain selective, because catalogues, audience ownership and rights positions are often more valuable than local headcount alone.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (1 of 66 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
16% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (11 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UK book and magazine publishing has no single licensing regulator; legal deposit applies to printed works, and the Legal Deposit Libraries (Non-Print Works) Regulations 2013 extend the regime to digital publications.
The Publishers Association and the Professional Publishers Association provide sector representation for UK publishing, consumer magazines and business media.
Consumer magazine and business media represented 35% of UK publishing in 2019, with 73 million magazines sold in export markets.
European book-market turnover in 2024 remained print-weighted, with print books at 82.9% of turnover and audiobooks at 4.2%.
European distribution in 2024 still leaned towards physical bookstores at 48.2% of turnover, compared with 23.5% for online sales and 20.3% for exports.

How Cambridge publishing companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a mix of subscriptions, print and digital sales, advertising packages, institutional access, rights licensing and outsourced publishing services. Cambridge publishers often package intellectual property more than they manufacture physical goods: commissioning, editing, peer review, design, metadata, fulfilment and format conversion sit around the core catalogue. Pricing tends to be catalogue- and audience-specific, from low-value individual purchases to annual institutional or membership subscriptions, with rights deals and custom publishing priced by title, territory, language or edition. Small teams may rely on freelance editors, designers and printers, so margin depends on repeatable production workflows and reuse of content across formats.
Who they sell to
Buyers are mixed: consumer and specialist-interest titles sell through retail, subscriptions, email lists and event-linked channels, while academic and professional lists sell to librarians, faculty buyers, training providers, trade associations and corporate knowledge teams. Decision-makers usually include editors, commissioning leads, librarians, budget holders, marketing directors, rights managers and procurement staff where institutions are involved. Lower-value purchases may be self-serve or retailer-mediated; institutional access, advertising packages and rights agreements tend to move through direct sales, renewals or negotiated partner channels. Sales cycles vary by calendar: academic budgets, catalogue seasons, conference schedules and subscription renewal dates often matter more than generic quarter-end pressure.
What they buy
Spend usually follows the catalogue lifecycle, from commissioning through rights exploitation and renewal. Most publishing firms tend to buy editorial workflow tools, production management systems, content management, digital asset management, subscription billing, customer relationship management, audience analytics, rights and royalties administration, finance systems and HR software. On the services side, common needs include freelance editing, proofing, indexing, design, translation, print procurement, fulfilment, warehousing, copyright advice, tax support and recruitment for commercial or production roles. Firms with digital periodicals or subscription audiences also tend to assess payment operations, identity and access management, email deliverability, consent management and cyber security.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when a publisher adds a new list, changes subscription model, takes on rights-heavy catalogue work, hires commercial leadership, moves into audio or digital editions, or replaces freelance-heavy production with a more repeatable process. Pain points are practical: late manuscripts, fragmented rights records, slow royalty calculations, renewals that rely on personal relationships, print-cost volatility and limited visibility on which audiences convert. Outbound should usually connect to a workflow owner rather than a generic managing director pitch: editorial operations for production tools, rights teams for licensing systems, finance for billing and royalties, and commercial leads for subscription or advertising yield.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
