Robotics Companies in the UK: 800+ Active Firms (2026)
Robotics companies design, integrate and support automated machinery, sensors and control systems for UK industrial and commercial users.
Buying centres tend to sit with operations, engineering, plant management and facilities teams, rather than with a standalone technology function. Demand clusters around production automation, machine vision and inspection, materials handling, controls retrofits and safety-led applications in factories, warehouses, infrastructure estates and commercial buildings. Buyers are usually mid-market or enterprise operators with capital budgets, maintenance constraints and measurable cases around precision, throughput, safety or labour availability. Engagements are usually capital-equipment or integration projects rather than low-touch software purchases: qualification often covers site surveys, integration risk, conformity documentation, commissioning, training and ongoing support.

The UK cohort contains 855 actively trading robotics and automation companies, with reported employment totalling 2,668 people. That direct headcount points to a specialised engineering market rather than a broad labour pool, and it sits alongside a mixed maturity profile: some suppliers have moved into mid-market turnover bands, while recent incorporations form only a smaller tail. For buyers, the practical market is likely to feel narrower than the company count suggests, because credible suppliers need domain experience, machinery-compliance capability and field support.
Robotics suppliers do not answer to a dedicated UK robotics regulator, but machinery compliance is central where equipment is placed on the Great Britain market or put into service. GOV.UK guidance for the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations says covered equipment must meet essential health and safety requirements, go through the relevant conformity assessment, carry a declaration of conformity and use an accepted conformity mark. CE marking recognition has been extended indefinitely in Great Britain, so CE and UKCA choices remain commercial as well as legal considerations. techUK is a cross-sector voice on adoption and policy, not a licensing gatekeeper.
Demand appears tied less to speculative automation and more to operational bottlenecks: labour availability, inspection consistency, safety cases and throughput in constrained sites. The cohort therefore tends to reward suppliers that can combine controls engineering, installation and after-sales support with credible compliance paperwork. Scale-up scarcity may persist where projects remain bespoke, because repeatable product margins are harder to prove than service revenue. Consolidation is plausible around systems integrators and specialist machine-vision teams, but buyer caution and long procurement cycles are likely to keep progress uneven.

Key facts
About 14% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (128 of 855 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
6% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (52 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Machinery placed on the Great Britain market is covered by the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, including essential health and safety requirements, conformity assessment and conformity marking.
CE marking recognition for many covered goods continues beyond 31 December 2024, so suppliers may use either CE or UKCA markings for relevant machinery.
UK industrial robot installations rose by 51% to 3,830 units in 2023, driven by automotive-industry assembly tasks.
techUK states that around 20,000 of the UK’s 27,000 manufacturing SMEs operate without robots.
IFR reports a 2023 global average of 162 robots per 10,000 manufacturing employees, compared with 219 in the EU; techUK says the UK ranks 24th globally in robotics adoption.

How UK robotics companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from engineered projects that combine hardware, controls software, integration work and after-sales service. A supplier may sell robotic cells, machine-vision systems, sensors, automated handling equipment or retrofit controls, then charge separately for design, installation, commissioning, training and support. Pricing is often milestone-based, with deposits, factory acceptance, site acceptance and warranty cover built into the commercial plan. Some firms add recurring income through software licences, remote monitoring, maintenance retainers, spare parts and service-level agreements, but most buying still looks closer to capital equipment than subscription software.
Who they sell to
Buyers are mostly manufacturers, logistics operators, infrastructure owners and commercial facilities with operational problems that can be measured in downtime, defect rates, safety incidents or labour gaps. Decision-makers tend to include operations directors, plant managers, engineering heads, facilities leads, procurement teams and finance directors, with health and safety staff involved where machinery risk is material. Sales are usually direct and consultative, although machinery builders, systems integrators and channel partners can influence access. Procurement rarely moves through a simple self-serve route; it usually needs site assessment, business-case modelling, compliance review and technical sign-off.
What they buy
Most robotics firms tend to spend on the tools and services that help them quote, build, install and support engineered systems. Common categories include computer-aided design, simulation, product lifecycle management, project accounting, inventory control, field-service management, CRM, proposal tools and quality management. Engineering teams may also need embedded software support, test equipment, component sourcing, cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure for device telemetry and analytics for machine performance. Professional services spend often sits around machinery compliance, insurance, accounting, intellectual property, technical recruitment, contract law and marketing aimed at industrial buyers rather than broad digital demand generation.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial pain often sits in the gap between bespoke engineering and repeatable delivery. Robotics suppliers tend to evaluate vendors when project volume stretches engineering capacity, component lead times threaten installation dates, service obligations become harder to schedule, or compliance evidence starts to slow customer sign-off. Other triggers include new operations leadership, larger premises, hiring for controls or field-service roles, and a shift from prototypes to packaged systems. Outbound messages work better when tied to measurable project friction: fewer quoting errors, clearer margin control, faster commissioning, safer documentation, better spares planning or reduced engineer travel, rather than abstract technology claims.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
