TIC Companies in the UK: 6,500+ Active Firms (2026)
Testing, inspection and certification companies assess products, systems and processes for conformity, safety and quality across the UK.
Buying centres tend to sit with quality, compliance, engineering and procurement teams rather than general operations. Work is usually sold to regulated manufacturers, infrastructure operators, importers, construction groups and public bodies that need evidence for customers, auditors or market access. Engagements range from laboratory schedules and calibration programmes to site inspections, management-system audits and certification cycles, often under framework agreements or repeat purchase orders. The commercial pattern is therefore less like advisory consulting and more like controlled technical production: competence has to be evidenced, methods documented, independence protected and findings defensible if a product, facility or supplier is challenged.
The UK cohort contains 6,501 actively trading TIC firms, ranging from specialist laboratories and inspection consultancies to multi-site assurance groups. Reported headcount stands at 6,178, which gives the sector a visible employment footprint even though many operators remain service-line specialists rather than broad assurance platforms. The structure is fragmented: local technical competence matters for inspections and calibration, while regulated supply chains and exporters tend to favour providers that can evidence impartiality, audit trails and recognised accreditation across repeat work.
Conformity assessment sits close to public policy because accreditation is used to establish that assessors are competent. GOV.UK describes third-party accreditation as "checking the checkers"; in practice, government policy says organisations seeking accreditation in the UK should use the country’s appointed national accreditation body, and that government recognises its accreditation for UK-operating organisations. Product conformity adds another layer. UKCA and CE regimes determine when testing, inspection or certification is needed before goods can be placed on a market, while OPSS guidance sets out the appointment route for Approved Bodies in Great Britain and UK Notified Bodies in Northern Ireland.
Consolidation appears more likely around capability gaps than pure geography: buyers tend to want accredited scope, sector experience and response capacity, while sellers need enough technical staff to keep utilisation and audit readiness in balance. Smaller specialists may remain viable where expertise is narrow, local access matters or equipment is costly to replicate. Scale-up scarcity is likely to persist because accreditation, impartiality requirements and technical sign-off constrain how quickly services can be added. The market therefore looks more incremental than cyclical, with growth tied to regulation, export documentation, ageing infrastructure and customer audit pressure rather than discretionary spending alone.

Key facts
About 3% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (260 of 6,501 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
13% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (900 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UKAS is the sole UK National Accreditation Body under the Accreditation Regulations 2009, and government policy recognises UKAS accreditation for organisations operating in the UK.
UKCA and CE regimes cover more than 20 product types, with sector-specific rules determining whether third-party assessment and marking are required.
OPSS appoints conformity assessment bodies as Approved Bodies for Great Britain or UK Notified Bodies for Northern Ireland, typically following UKAS accreditation.
One market-research source says the UK accounted for 4.5% of the global testing, inspection and certification market in 2025, and projects the US to lead global revenue in 2033.
Testing is generally reported as the largest service line, while certification is commonly identified as the faster-growing service segment.

How UK TIC companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
TIC firms usually earn revenue from repeat technical service lines rather than one-off advice. Laboratory testing may be priced per sample, method, batch or turnaround commitment; inspection work often uses day rates, site-visit charges and travel recovery; calibration tends to sit on planned schedules for named instruments or facilities. Certification and management-system audits add application fees, surveillance visits, renewal cycles and charges for scope changes. The deliverable is normally evidence: test reports, calibration certificates, inspection findings, audit records and conformity documentation. Margins depend on staff utilisation, equipment uptime, accreditation scope and the ability to keep methods, records and technical sign-off aligned across repeat work.
Who they sell to
Most TIC providers sell into quality, compliance, engineering, health and safety, procurement and technical assurance teams. Typical customers include regulated manufacturers, construction and infrastructure groups, utilities, importers, exporters and public-sector buyers that need defensible evidence before products, assets or suppliers can be accepted. Smaller jobs may be quote-led through technical contacts, particularly for routine tests or calibration. Larger accounts tend to involve procurement frameworks, supplier qualification, audits of the provider, insurance checks and documented impartiality controls. Sales cycles can be short where an urgent certificate is needed, but multi-site inspection, certification or outsourced laboratory contracts usually move through formal evaluation and renewal windows.
What they buy
Most TIC firms tend to spend on systems that protect traceability and throughput. Common software needs include laboratory information management, quality management, document control, audit workflow, field-service scheduling, asset and calibration management, customer portals, CRM, quoting, billing and management reporting. Security and access control matter where customer designs, regulated product files or public-sector work are handled. Services spend often covers accreditation support, legal review, insurance, finance, technical marketing, search visibility and recruitment for assessors, inspectors, laboratory staff and quality managers. Infrastructure buying can include laboratory equipment, metrology tools, sample logistics, mobile inspection devices, storage, cloud hosting and facilities work for controlled environments.
Why and how to sell to them
TIC buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when audit findings expose weak records, turnaround times slip, technical staff are hard to schedule, or accreditation scope changes create new evidence requirements. Other triggers include opening a laboratory, adding a regulated service line, winning a framework, replacing ageing field systems, or moving from local specialist work to multi-site delivery. Outbound messages usually land better when they refer to utilisation, traceability, audit readiness, certificate turnaround, evidence retention or conflict-of-interest controls rather than generic growth claims. The useful commercial angle is often risk reduction with measurable operational impact: fewer missed calibrations, cleaner document trails, faster quotations, less manual rekeying and clearer capacity planning.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
