Autonomous Mobility Companies in the UK: 72 Active Firms (2026)
Autonomous mobility companies in the UK develop self-driving vehicle systems, mobility platforms and supporting safety, data and roadworthiness services.
Buying centres tend to sit with transport operators, vehicle-technology teams, infrastructure managers and public-sector mobility programmes rather than consumer app owners. Sales are usually evidence-led: safety case work, trial support, operational assurance, data governance and roadworthiness services have to satisfy technical, procurement and regulatory stakeholders. Engagements look more like regulated systems projects than light software subscriptions, with pilots, authorisation work and ongoing support bundled into long procurement cycles. The better-fit suppliers are specialist growth businesses and mid-market operators serving GB road deployments, where cyber resilience, data security and in-use monitoring matter as much as the driving stack itself.
The UK cohort remains small: 72 autonomous mobility companies are actively trading, with 8 reporting turnover above £5M and 9 incorporated since 2022. That points to a market where most suppliers remain specialist, while a smaller group has moved into larger commercial contracts. The reported employment footprint is 964 people, so the sector’s company count understates the concentration of technical labour in safety engineering, vehicle systems, data operations and operational support. For researchers, the useful caution is that revenue scale appears uneven: reported turnover separates a small set of established operators from a long tail still proving deployment routes.
The Automated Vehicles Act gives autonomous mobility a clearer statutory route than many adjacent transport technologies, but it also makes approval, authorisation and in-use compliance central commercial issues. The Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles sits within the Department for Transport and steers implementation alongside DfT, DBT, DVSA, DVLA, VCA and National Highways. Trialling continues to sit under the Code of Practice for automated vehicle trialling, while the implementation programme covers roadworthiness, cyber resilience, data security and independent incident investigation. Market structure therefore favours suppliers that can document safety cases and operational responsibilities, not just vehicle autonomy functions.
Commercial progress appears likely to remain gated by authorisation pathways, trial evidence and customer risk appetite. The cohort has enough specialist suppliers to cover safety assurance, platform work and operational support, but scale-up depth looks limited, so partnerships with transport operators and vehicle-technology groups may matter more than stand-alone expansion. Procurement tends to be slow where public roads, incident investigation and cyber resilience are involved. Consolidation may follow once use cases become repeatable; until then, many firms are likely to stay focused on narrow deployment settings, regulated pilots and services around approval rather than broad consumer mobility.

Key facts
About 11% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (8 of 72 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
12% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (9 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The Automated Vehicles Act 2024 creates an authorisation process for vehicles that can safely drive themselves on GB roads, with secondary legislation and guidance due for implementation in 2027.
Implementation work covers approval and authorisation, ongoing requirements, in-use regulation, roadworthiness, cyber resilience, data security and an independent incident investigation capability.
Trialling is supported through the Code of Practice for automated vehicle trialling while domestic rules are developed alongside work to harmonise international self-driving rules.
GOV.UK has described the UK self-driving vehicle opportunity as worth up to £42 billion and capable of creating 38,000 more skilled jobs by 2035.

How UK autonomous mobility companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Autonomous mobility companies tend to earn through project fees, engineering services, technology licensing and ongoing operational support rather than pure subscription revenue. Commercial work often combines autonomy software, sensor and vehicle integration, simulation, safety assessment, data handling and field support. Pricing is usually tied to pilots, regulated deployments, per-vehicle or per-site usage, and retained support for monitoring, maintenance and assurance. Hardware margins can be thin where firms rely on specialist components, so many providers try to attach services revenue around testing, approval work, incident review and operational readiness.
Who they sell to
Typical customers are transport operators, fleet owners, vehicle-technology teams, infrastructure managers and public-sector mobility programmes. Buyers usually include CTOs, heads of engineering, safety leads, operations directors, procurement teams and legal or compliance stakeholders. Most sales are direct and consultative, with technical workshops preceding any commercial proposal. Public bodies and larger operators often use RFPs or framework-style procurement, while private pilots can start through a narrower operational sponsor. Contract values vary by deployment scope, but even small pilots tend to require budget owners who can tolerate long validation cycles and external scrutiny.
What they buy
Most autonomous mobility firms tend to spend on cloud infrastructure, data storage, simulation environments, test management, cyber security, observability, fleet operations software and compliance tooling. They also buy legal advice, insurance support, safety-case consultancy, technical documentation services, specialist recruitment and finance support suited to project-based revenue. Firms with vehicles or roadside equipment may need facilities, maintenance partners, calibration services, connectivity and supply-chain management. Sales and marketing spend is usually more focused on account-based outreach, bid support and partnership development than high-volume demand generation, because the buyer pool is narrow and technically specialised.
Why and how to sell to them
Autonomous mobility buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a pilot moves towards public-road deployment, when authorisation work starts, when operational headcount grows, or when a transport partner asks for clearer evidence of safety, cyber resilience and incident handling. Common frictions include slow procurement, unclear responsibility between vehicle, software and operator teams, audit-heavy documentation, and the cost of keeping trials running while approval routes mature. Useful outbound angles are practical rather than visionary: reduce approval risk, create better audit trails, improve monitoring of in-use systems, support regulated procurement, or make scarce engineering and compliance teams less stretched.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
