Blockchain & Crypto Companies in the UK: 200+ Active Firms (2026)
Blockchain and crypto companies build distributed-ledger infrastructure, custody, trading, stablecoin and compliance services for UK markets.
Buying activity tends to sit with compliance, treasury, product and engineering teams rather than a single technology budget. Demand is mainly B2B: financial services groups, fintechs, institutional investors, digital-asset businesses and enterprises testing tokenisation or ledger automation. Engagements split between subscription software for monitoring, reporting and integration, and regulated-service relationships where onboarding involves safeguarding checks, anti-money-laundering controls, custody procedures and legal review. Suppliers fitting that pattern usually show measurable UK revenue, a technical operating model and enough process maturity to sell into regulated buyers without behaving like general consumer crypto apps.

The UK cohort contains 276 actively trading blockchain and crypto firms. Reported employment totals 1,405 people, which points to a cohort dominated by lean operators rather than labour-intensive financial institutions. Scale is uneven: 25 firms have turnover above £5M, while 54 were incorporated since 2022. That mix is consistent with a market where regulated service providers, compliance tooling and trading-platform infrastructure sit alongside younger ledger-integration and tokenisation ventures.
The regulatory perimeter remains activity-led. Firms carrying on crypto services within scope of the Money Laundering Regulations must register with the FCA, which registers, supervises and enforces them for anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist financing purposes. Financial promotions, the Travel Rule, stablecoins, admissions and disclosures, and market abuse also sit in the FCA's current work programme. Planned regulated activities cover qualifying cryptoasset trading platforms, safeguarding and custody, dealing, arranging, staking and issuing qualifying stablecoins, with UK-facing firms expected to need FCA authorisation under the future regime. FCA-commissioned consumer research also frames some ownership as part of wider investment portfolios, while the FCA continues to describe investing in crypto as unregulated and high-risk.
Early-commercial weight still shapes the market. Many firms appear to be proving demand around compliance, custody workflows, tokenisation pilots and infrastructure integrations, while a smaller set is already selling regulated services into financial institutions. FCA authorisation is likely to raise the cost of staying in market, so consolidation may come from compliance burden as much as from customer demand. Enterprise adoption tends to move through pilots and controlled roll-outs, which favours suppliers that can evidence governance, auditability and operational continuity over those relying on speculative token demand.

Key facts
About 9% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (25 of 276 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
19% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (54 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Cryptoasset firms within scope of the Money Laundering Regulations must register with the FCA for anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing supervision.
Financial-promotion rules and the Travel Rule already apply around parts of UK cryptoasset activity, with developing rules covering stablecoins, admissions, disclosures and market abuse.
HM Treasury’s 2025 policy note brings trading platforms, safeguarding and custody, dealing, arranging, staking and qualifying stablecoin issuance into the planned authorisation perimeter.
The FCA says the new crypto regime is expected to come into force on 25 October 2027.
FCA-commissioned research published in 2024 found that 93% of UK adults had heard of cryptoassets and 12% owned them, extrapolated to around 7 million adults.

How UK blockchain & crypto companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from subscriptions, custody and safeguarding fees, transaction charges, API usage, implementation work and advisory retainers around tokenisation or ledger integration. Software firms often package monitoring, reporting, wallet operations or settlement tooling as annual contracts, with extra charges for volume, connectors or support. Regulated-service providers tend to price around onboarding, account activity, assets under custody or trading flow, so revenue can move with client activity as well as licence terms. Engagements are usually technical and risk-led: buyers expect documented controls, audit trails, service continuity and a clear split between operational software, regulated activity and speculative token exposure.
Who they sell to
Customers are usually financial services firms, fintechs, digital-asset businesses, institutional investors and enterprises testing controlled ledger use cases. The buying group often includes the MLRO, compliance director, CTO, product lead, treasury team, legal counsel and procurement, with security review added where wallet, key-management or transaction data is involved. Smaller developer tools may sell through self-serve trials or founder-led outreach, but regulated services and enterprise infrastructure typically move through direct sales, proof-of-concept work, legal review and supplier due diligence. Contract values vary from departmental software spend to larger regulated-service agreements, and sales cycles tend to lengthen when FCA perimeter questions or safeguarding processes are unresolved.
What they buy
Most blockchain and crypto firms tend to spend on compliance operations before general growth tooling. Relevant categories include KYC and KYB workflows, AML transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, Travel Rule processes, financial-promotion review, case management, policy management and regulatory reporting. Technical teams also buy cloud infrastructure, key-management controls, observability, incident response, penetration testing, data warehousing, ledger reconciliation and API management. As they mature, they need finance systems that can handle fiat and digital-asset balances, revenue recognition, tax support, audit preparation, insurance advice, legal counsel and specialist recruitment for compliance, security and protocol engineering. Generic CRM, marketing automation and customer support tools matter, but usually after trust, uptime and regulatory hygiene are under control.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying triggers tend to appear when firms move from pilot activity into regulated client delivery, prepare for FCA authorisation, win an institutional customer, expand into the UK, hire senior compliance staff or replace manual reconciliation with controlled workflows. Pain points are usually evidencing governance, reducing onboarding friction, managing wallet and transaction risk, separating retail-risk perceptions from B2B infrastructure, and keeping technical teams from becoming ad hoc compliance administrators. Outbound messages land better when they reference specific operating pressures: audit evidence, policy enforcement, faster due diligence, lower manual review workload or clearer board reporting. Crypto-native language helps with credibility, but pitches still need to read like regulated-finance procurement rather than token-market enthusiasm.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
