Crypto Trading Companies in the UK: 73 Active Firms (2026)
Crypto trading companies operate exchange, brokerage and execution services for cryptoassets, under UK FCA oversight where in scope.
Buying centres cluster around retail brokerage, institutional market access and execution services for professional counterparties. Customer acquisition is split between low-touch consumer onboarding and relationship-led institutional sales, with compliance checks sitting close to the commercial process rather than after it. Typical engagements range from account-based retail usage to negotiated counterparty arrangements where pricing, custody, settlement, and risk controls matter to the buyer. The cohort also includes firms serving professional traders that need market access without building their own regulated operating layer. Most appear to run from lean teams, so revenue per employee and compliance workload are useful lenses when comparing them.
The UK cohort is compact: 73 crypto trading companies are actively trading, with 9 above £5M in reported turnover and 14 incorporated since 2022. Reported headcount totals 630, which points to a labour footprint closer to specialist financial-market infrastructure than to broad consumer software. That shape matters for researchers because a small number of higher-revenue operators can alter aggregate interpretation, while newer entrants tend to be testing distribution, registration strategy, or institutional niche access. The list therefore reads less like a general technology category and more like a regulated market-access segment with a short commercial tail.
FCA supervision is central where UK-facing cryptoasset services fall within anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing rules. Cryptoasset exchange providers and custodian wallet providers must register under the Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds Regulations before beginning in-scope business. Financial promotions rules also reach cryptoasset promotions to UK consumers, including cases where the promoting firm is outside the UK. The registration gateway has been selective, with many applications not reaching approval, so operating model, governance, source-of-funds controls and consumer-risk wording are not background issues. They shape whether a trading venue or broker can operate at all.
The sector appears likely to remain bifurcated between lean retail-facing brokers and more process-heavy institutional access providers. Compliance costs, consumer-risk messaging and registration uncertainty tend to favour operators with clearer governance and documented controls, rather than firms relying mainly on marketing reach. Consolidation may follow where smaller firms struggle to absorb compliance overhead or to maintain banking, custody and settlement relationships. At the same time, demand from professional counterparties keeps a route open for specialist firms that focus on execution quality, operational discipline and a narrower product set. Scale-up scarcity is likely to remain part of the market’s character.

Key facts
About 12% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (9 of 73 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
19% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (14 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Cryptoasset exchange providers and custodian wallet providers must register with the FCA under the Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds Regulations 2017 before beginning in-scope UK business.
Cryptoasset promotions to UK consumers fall under the UK financial promotions regime, regardless of where the promoting firm is based.
Since January 2020, the FCA had received 396 applications and registered 63 firms as at 1 May 2026, with many applications withdrawn.
FCA consumer research published in 2024 found that 93% of UK adults had heard of cryptoassets and 12% owned them, extrapolated to around 7 million adults.
Central, Northern and Western Europe received $987.25 billion in on-chain value between July 2023 and June 2024, accounting for 21.7% of global transaction volume.

How UK crypto trading companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Crypto trading companies typically earn through transaction fees, bid-ask spreads, custody or wallet charges, settlement fees, and negotiated access arrangements for higher-volume counterparties. Retail-facing brokers usually depend on repeat account activity and low-friction onboarding, while institutional access providers price around volume, execution quality, risk limits and service levels. Some firms also sell infrastructure-like services to professional traders that want access, compliance cover or operational support without building a full regulated trading stack. The commercial model is therefore less like pure software and more like financial-market intermediation: usage rises with trading activity, but margin depends on liquidity, controls and operational resilience.
Who they sell to
Most retail-facing firms sell directly to individuals through self-serve onboarding, with compliance checks embedded before deposits, transfers or trading can begin. Institutional and professional propositions usually sell to trading firms, asset managers, family offices, payment businesses and other counterparties that care about liquidity, custody, settlement and reporting. Buyers tend to include Heads of Trading, COOs, CTOs, compliance leads and CFOs, with procurement becoming more formal where the customer is regulated. Retail conversion can be short if checks pass; institutional sales cycles tend to involve due diligence, legal review, security assessment and counterparty-risk approval before trading limits are agreed.
What they buy
Most crypto trading firms tend to spend on compliance operations before broad back-office software. Common buying categories include identity verification, business verification, sanctions screening, transaction monitoring, case management, fraud detection, financial-promotions review, audit trails and regulatory reporting support. They also buy cloud infrastructure, security monitoring, incident response, key-management processes, reconciliation tooling, customer support systems, CRM, finance software and specialist legal or accounting advice. Firms moving towards institutional access may need better uptime monitoring, data feeds, liquidity connectivity, treasury controls and workflow tooling for onboarding counterparties. Recruitment support is often relevant where compliance, engineering and trading operations need sector-specific experience.
Why and how to sell to them
Crypto trading buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when compliance workload starts to slow onboarding, when banking or custody relationships require better evidence, or when institutional clients ask for clearer controls. FCA registration work, financial-promotions reviews, new product launches, leadership changes and hiring in compliance or engineering are useful intent signals. Outbound messages usually land better when they connect to operational risk rather than general growth: fewer manual reviews, clearer audit trails, faster counterparty checks, better incident visibility, or lower friction between commercial and compliance teams. Claims need care, because buyers in this sector are wary of tools that promise speed while weakening governance.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
