Digital Twin Companies in the UK: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Digital twin companies build validated virtual models of physical assets, environments and processes for UK industry and infrastructure.
Buying centres tend to sit in asset-intensive functions rather than general IT: operations, engineering, estates, transport planning, manufacturing performance and energy management. Customers are usually mid-market or enterprise organisations with physical sites, fleets, plants or networks, and public-sector bodies where connected places and infrastructure resilience matter. Engagements are closer to systems integration and assurance-led analytics than light software subscriptions, with procurement shaped by tolerance setting, model validation, operational telemetry, cloud architecture and security review. The better-matched suppliers can explain assumptions in the model, keep a live link to the asset or process being mirrored, and work with existing sensor, simulation and analytics stacks.
Across the UK, the cohort contains 127 actively trading companies, which makes this a specialist field rather than a broad software category. Reported employment totals 1,841 people, pointing to a market made up mainly of specialist teams with a smaller group of higher-turnover operators. Only 20 sit above £5M turnover, and 12 were incorporated since 2022, so recent formation exists but does not dominate the list. The commercial centre of gravity appears to be operational problem-solving for industry and infrastructure, where buying cycles are shaped by proof, integration and risk rather than licence volume alone.
UK regulation sits around use cases rather than a dedicated digital-twin licence, so obligations follow the activity: infrastructure operators, transport authorities, manufacturers and energy customers bring their own safety, resilience and procurement rules. GOV.UK’s official wording narrows the concept to validated models tied to a real-world counterpart, with bidirectional data flow, a known tolerance, a validation envelope and documented assumptions. The Department for Business and Trade’s National Digital Twin Programme is intended to build standards, processes and tools for a functioning market. NCSC guidance is also relevant because these systems can widen cyber-attack surfaces, expose operational information and connect cloud, AI and connected-place risks.
Commercial development appears tied to credibility rather than category awareness. Buyers tend to ask whether the model can be trusted in live operations, who is accountable when assumptions drift, and how operational information is protected once it leaves the plant, network or building. That favours suppliers with domain specialists, audit trails and security design alongside simulation skills. Many smaller firms may remain project-led, while higher-turnover operators are better placed to turn repeat deployments into reusable platforms. Consolidation looks plausible where engineering consultancies, industrial software teams and infrastructure specialists compete for the same budgets.

Key facts
About 15% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (20 of 127 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
9% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (12 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
GOV.UK’s 2025 definition requires two-way data flow, a known tolerance, a validation envelope, stated assumptions and no statistical bias.
The National Digital Twin Programme is intended to develop standards, processes and tools for a functioning UK market.
NCSC guidance says digital twins can widen cyber-attack surfaces and expose operational data, so secure design is expected from the outset.
Automotive and transport is identified as the largest UK end-use segment in 2025 and the fastest-growing segment from 2026 to 2033.
The UK is estimated at 5.7% of the global digital twin market in 2025.

How UK digital twin companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Digital twin suppliers usually earn revenue through a blend of paid discovery, model build, systems integration, licence fees and ongoing support. The sale is rarely just access to an application: it often includes ingesting operational telemetry, configuring simulation or analytics layers, validating tolerances, and documenting how the model should be used in decisions. Pricing may be tied to sites, assets, users, data volumes or managed-service scope, with separate charges for implementation and assurance work. Lighter tools can support self-serve trials, but most commercial value sits in repeatable deployments for estates, plants, fleets or networks where the buyer needs evidence that the model reflects live conditions.
Who they sell to
Typical customers are asset owners and operators in manufacturing, energy, transport, construction, utilities and large estates, plus public-sector teams responsible for place, resilience and infrastructure planning. Day-to-day sponsors tend to be operations directors, heads of engineering, digital operations teams, estate leads or energy managers, while CTOs, CISOs, finance and procurement enter once telemetry, cloud hosting and risk are in scope. Contracts usually move through workshops, paid pilots, technical assurance and board-level business-case review rather than a short software demo. Public-sector and regulated-infrastructure sales may involve framework procurement or RFPs; private-sector deals are more often direct, sometimes supported by engineering consultancies or implementation partners.
What they buy
Most digital twin firms tend to spend on cloud infrastructure, sensor and IoT integration, data engineering, simulation tooling, analytics, cybersecurity, identity management and backup. Sales and marketing systems matter where firms are trying to move from bespoke projects to repeatable sector propositions, especially CRM, proposal management, account-based marketing and customer success workflows. Finance and operations teams often need billing, project accounting, utilisation tracking and contract management because revenue can mix licence, services and support lines. Specialist services can also fit: technical recruitment, security testing, legal review for operational-data rights, insurance, public-sector bid support and technical content that explains model assumptions without overstating certainty.
Why and how to sell to them
Digital twin buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a pilot is becoming an operational system, a major asset programme needs live performance evidence, or a customer has asked for clearer assurance around safety, resilience or energy use. Other triggers include new operations or security leadership, headcount growth in engineering teams, a public-sector procurement window, or a move from project revenue to repeatable platform delivery. Outbound is more credible when it names the operational problem first: reducing manual model validation, shortening integration with plant systems, protecting sensitive telemetry, improving audit trails, or helping commercial teams prove value before renewal. Generic software-efficiency claims usually land poorly with this group.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
