Web3 and DeFi Companies in the UK: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Web3 and DeFi companies in the UK build blockchain-based financial protocols, digital asset infrastructure and decentralised applications.
Buying centres tend to sit in product, risk and engineering teams rather than central IT procurement. Infrastructure-led suppliers sell transaction rails, custody-adjacent operations, data, security and developer tooling to financial and technology customers. Application providers usually attach to tokenised-asset workflows and decentralised applications, while compliance-tooling firms sell monitoring, policy controls and audit evidence. Engagements look like material business-to-business software or infrastructure contracts rather than self-serve app purchases, with evaluation led by security, legal and finance stakeholders. The better-fit operators are commercial rather than speculative, with revenue tied to protocol services, transaction rails, data, security or developer tooling.
At 129 actively trading companies, the UK cohort is closer to a specialist infrastructure and digital-finance market than a broad software category. Reported employment totals 1,152 people, pointing to lean operating models even where products are commercially deployed. That footprint fits a sector built around small engineering, compliance and go-to-market teams selling into financial and technology customers. For researchers, the practical implication is that buyer validation and revenue quality matter as much as incorporation age or product vocabulary.
Where activity touches custody-adjacent operations, transaction rails or digital-asset services, buyers tend to treat suppliers as part of the financial-market control environment rather than as ordinary software vendors. That affects the sales motion: security review, smart-contract assurance, governance evidence and incident-response procedures often sit alongside commercial pricing. Compliance-tooling providers occupy a different position, selling the evidence layer that financial and technology customers use to monitor exposure. The market structure is therefore shaped by trust, auditability and integration risk as much as by protocol design.
The cohort appears split between early-commercial protocol specialists and a thinner layer of revenue-bearing infrastructure operators. Demand tends to follow practical adoption rather than token-market cycles: compliance, data, security and developer tooling are easier for financial and technology buyers to justify than speculative consumer applications. Scale-up scarcity may persist because enterprise customers still test supplier resilience, custody exposure and legal accountability before committing production workloads. Consolidation is more likely around regulated workflow, monitoring and infrastructure layers than around general-purpose decentralised applications, where procurement remains cautious.

Key facts
About 8% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (11 of 129 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
21% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (28 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Business models span protocol development, custody-adjacent tooling, payments infrastructure and digital-asset analytics.
The sector sits between software, financial services and capital-markets infrastructure, which tends to lengthen buyer diligence around risk and integration.
Revenue generation can be less headcount-intensive where software, infrastructure or protocol-linked models do most of the scaling work.

How UK Web3 and DeFi companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from subscriptions, usage-based fees, integration work and sometimes transaction-linked charges. Infrastructure operators charge for access to networks, wallets, custody-adjacent workflows, data feeds or developer interfaces; application providers price by seat, workflow volume or managed asset activity; compliance specialists sell monitoring and audit functions on annual contracts. Engagements are rarely pure click-to-buy purchases. A typical deal includes technical due diligence, legal review and implementation support, because customers need evidence that smart-contract logic, key-management processes and financial controls can survive production use.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually financial institutions, digital-asset service providers, software platforms and other infrastructure operators. Most opportunities start with product, engineering, risk or compliance teams, then move through legal, finance and security before procurement signs off. CTOs, heads of product, CISOs, general counsel and CFOs tend to influence the decision in different ways. Contract values are typically material enough to require formal vendor onboarding, but not always large enough for a full public-sector-style tender. Direct sales and founder-led selling remain common, with partner referrals used where regulated customers want additional confidence.
What they buy
Most Web3 and DeFi firms tend to spend first on engineering capacity, cloud infrastructure, node operations, security testing, code review, key-management controls and monitoring. Commercial teams usually need CRM, billing, revenue analytics, partner-management tooling and customer support workflows once pilots become repeatable contracts. Compliance-heavy operators also buy identity checks, transaction monitoring, policy management, audit support, legal advice, tax accounting, insurance and board reporting. Recruitment partners can be relevant where the hiring requirement is narrow: protocol engineers, security reviewers, compliance specialists and product managers with financial-market context.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often appears around production launches, regulated-customer onboarding, security reviews, finance leadership changes and shifts from pilot work to recurring contracts. Buyers tend to evaluate vendors when integration risk becomes a blocker, audit evidence becomes labour-intensive, or internal teams lack specialist capacity. Sales angles work better when they are evidence-led: fewer manual controls, clearer approval trails, faster security review, lower operational exposure or easier reporting to customers and boards. Claims about decentralisation or market upside are usually less persuasive than proof that the supplier can reduce risk without slowing product delivery.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
