Textile Companies in the UK: 7,200+ Active Firms (2026)
Textile companies in the UK manufacture fabrics, garments and apparel components within a regulated product-labelling and consumer-protection market.
Buying centres tend to sit with sourcing, operations, quality, merchandising and public procurement teams rather than with a single software-style budget owner. The customer base is mixed: retailers looking for compliant garment supply, industrial buyers specifying technical textiles, wholesalers using UK production for replenishment, and public-sector purchasers that need traceability and repeatable quality assurance. Engagements range from sampling, grading and short-run cut-and-sew work to ongoing fabric finishing, warehousing and wholesale-manufacturing arrangements. The more useful commercial signal is often not brand visibility, but whether a manufacturer can evidence fibre composition, product descriptions, traceability and delivery reliability across repeat orders.
Across the UK, 7,235 textile companies are actively trading, with activity spread across fabric production, garment making, technical textiles, finishing and wholesale-manufacturing functions. Reported headcount totals 4,509 people, putting the employment footprint in the same operational frame as workshops, warehouses and factory functions rather than only design or brand ownership. The cohort includes specialist manufacturers serving repeat business customers, retailers and public-sector buyers, as well as newer entrants that appear to sit closer to sampling, small-batch production and circularity services. For researchers, the useful split is usually between capacity-owning operators and lighter-touch sourcing or wholesale-manufacturing vehicles.
Product rules matter here because fibre claims, labels and descriptions sit close to the commercial transaction. Textile products must carry a fibre-content label, with the manufacturer or UK importer responsible for ensuring it is in English, durable, legible, visible and accessible. Only prescribed fibre names may be used, and goods containing fur, leather, bone or other non-textile animal-origin parts must use the phrase "contains non-textile parts of animal origin". Misleading descriptions and omissions also fall under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act. UKFT provides a trade-body reference point for fashion and textile manufacturers, but there is no single sector licence comparable with financial services authorisation.
Growth appears most plausible where manufacturers can prove compliance, traceability and repeatable quality while still handling smaller production runs. Retail and public-sector buyers tend to value dependable supply and clear product claims, which favours operators with documentation habits as much as sewing or finishing capacity. Circular reuse, repair and recycling services may pull more firms into partnerships with collectors, wholesalers and manufacturers, although margins are likely to remain uneven. The sector also looks exposed to consolidation by capability: buyers may prefer fewer suppliers that can combine production, finishing, storage and assurance rather than a fragmented chain of narrow subcontractors.

Key facts
About 3% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (256 of 7,235 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
20% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (1,476 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Textile products must carry fibre-content labels in English under the Textile Products (Labelling and Fibre Composition) Regulations 2012, using prescribed fibre names and labels that are durable, legible, visible and accessible.
Products containing fur, leather, bone or other non-textile animal-origin parts must state "contains non-textile parts of animal origin"; misleading descriptions and omissions fall under Part 4, Chapter 1 of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024.
The wider UK fashion and textile industry contributes £62 billion to the UK economy, supports 1.3 million jobs and raises more than £23 billion in tax revenues.
The UK consumed 1.42 million tonnes of new textile products in 2022, while 1.45 million tonnes of used textiles were generated in the UK that year.
Global fibre production reached 124 million tonnes in 2023, up from 116 million tonnes in 2022, and is projected to reach 160 million tonnes by 2030 if current trends continue.

How UK textile companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from production capacity and repeatable supply rather than from intellectual property alone. Textile firms may sell fabric by the metre, finished garments by the unit, technical textile components by specification, or cut-and-sew services by batch, labour input and set-up charge. Sampling, grading, pattern work and finishing can be paid as one-off project work, while wholesalers and retailers often move into call-off orders once fit, colour, fibre composition and delivery reliability are proven. Margins tend to sit in the detail: minimum order quantities, rework rates, wastage, stockholding, delivery windows and whether the manufacturer is carrying materials or only providing labour and process capability.
Who they sell to
Most sell to business buyers rather than consumers: retailers, wholesalers, uniform and workwear purchasers, industrial users, public-sector procurement teams and export intermediaries. The practical decision-makers are usually sourcing, buying, merchandising, operations, quality, technical product and procurement roles, with finance involved where credit terms or inventory exposure are material. Short sampling or replenishment work can move through direct relationships and referrals, while public-sector and larger retail supply tends to involve tender portals, approved-supplier lists, audits and specification packs. Sales cycles vary accordingly: a small-batch garment order may close after sampling, but technical textiles and framework supply usually require more evidence before orders repeat.
What they buy
Textile manufacturers tend to spend on systems and services that reduce errors across quoting, production, stock, quality and proof of compliance. Relevant categories include manufacturing resource planning, inventory and warehouse software, product information management, fibre and labelling workflow tools, traceability systems, supplier management, finance, payroll, HR, CRM and business reporting. Capacity-owning operators may also buy machinery maintenance, energy advice, waste handling, testing support, packaging, freight, insurance and recruitment services for production, warehouse and technical roles. Firms working with retailers or public-sector buyers are more likely to value audit trails, document control and order-status visibility than generic sales automation on its own.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when a textile firm wins repeat retail work, starts bidding for public-sector supply, adds finishing or warehousing capability, or moves from sampling into regular production. Pain points tend to cluster around margin control, stock accuracy, delivery reliability, rework, fibre-claim evidence and the burden of answering buyer audits. Outbound angles work better when they attach to these events rather than to abstract efficiency claims. A useful pitch shows how the seller can shorten quoting, reduce production surprises, make quality records easier to retrieve, or help the manufacturer evidence product descriptions and traceability without adding another manual process for factory and office teams.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
