What they do
Wholesalers usually earn revenue from the margin between supplier purchase price and trade resale price, with additional income from rebates, delivery charges, handling fees, warranties, installation support or value-added packaging where the category permits it. Pricing is often account-specific: negotiated discount bands, volume breaks, minimum order quantities and credit limits matter more than public list prices. Inventory turns, gross margin and debtor days are usually more important operating measures than one-off order value.
Who they sell to
Customers range from independent retailers and contractors to multi-site operators, institutions and public-sector buyers using approved frameworks. The usual decision-makers are procurement managers, category leads, operations directors, finance teams and, in smaller trade accounts, owner-managers who care about credit terms and delivery dependability. Sales motion varies by customer size: smaller buyers may order through trade counters or online portals, while larger accounts are usually managed through direct sales, supplier onboarding checks and periodic price reviews. Contract size is often better understood through reorder cadence, credit exposure and share of wallet than through a single initial purchase.

Other triggers include a new import route, a product-category expansion, a tender win, a finance hire, a warehouse move or a shift from manual ordering to digital trade accounts. Outbound that works in this sector is usually operational rather than speculative: fewer picking errors, cleaner credit decisions, faster invoice matching, lower cost-to-serve and better visibility across stock and orders. Evidence should map to gross margin, cash conversion, fulfilment accuracy or customer retention, rather than generic productivity claims.

This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
