Other Companies in the UK: 23,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Other companies in the UK provide products and services outside the main industry tags, spanning mid-market and larger employers.
Buying centres usually sit with operations, finance, procurement and corporate development, rather than a neat product or vertical owner. The typical seller is B2B or mixed-market, serving mid-market and enterprise customers through retained operational contracts, outsourced service packages, or portfolio-level supplier relationships rather than single-seat purchases. Residual classification tends to capture organisations whose commercial substance is visible but whose activity crosses standard vertical boundaries: holding structures, niche service lines, mixed physical and digital operations, and specialist suppliers serving several end markets.
The UK cohort contains 23,160 actively trading companies, making the residual category a sizeable long tail rather than a narrow exception. Reported employment totals 2,240 people, so the headcount footprint is modest relative to the company count and appears concentrated among firms with enough filing detail to evidence operating activity. Researchers using the list for supplier discovery should expect a mix: employer businesses with accounts depth, holding or service entities with low headcount, and recently formed firms still resolving their market position.
Residual classification does not remove regulatory exposure; it moves the question down to the activity being carried out. Because the category cuts across operating models, obligations tend to follow employment, tax, health and safety, consumer sales, procurement terms, sector licensing, or financial reporting. Holding-company structures can also obscure where the regulated activity sits, especially when trading subsidiaries, shared-service units and asset-owning entities sit under the same umbrella. Market structure is awkward for peer comparison: firms may share a residual label while selling into unrelated budgets.
Heterogeneity appears likely to persist, because the residual label tends to absorb firms whose business models blur standard vertical boundaries. Some will migrate into clearer categories as filings, websites or accounts make the activity easier to classify; others will remain useful precisely because they connect different buyer groups. Consolidation may be more visible in service-heavy pockets than in asset-holding structures. The main constraint is comparability: researchers should treat the cohort as a map of edge cases and cross-sector operating businesses rather than a unified market with a shared demand cycle.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (78 of 23,160 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
16% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (3,897 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The segment sits outside the main industry tags, so it is better read as a residual market map than as a single sector.
Catch-all categories can surface operating businesses that narrower sector screens tend to miss.
Qualification usually needs more manual review because the cohort mixes operating companies, group structures and specialised service providers.

How UK Other companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Residual-category companies usually earn revenue by stitching together activities that do not sit cleanly in one vertical. Common models include retained service contracts, management fees, project delivery, outsourced operations, specialist supply agreements and margin on physical or digital goods. Some charge subscriptions or licence fees where there is a software or platform component, but many are closer to operating businesses than pure software vendors. Engagements tend to be priced around scope, service levels, asset access or volume rather than individual users, which makes discovery calls more useful than standard seat-based qualification.
Who they sell to
Most sell to mid-market, enterprise or public-sector-adjacent buyers where the problem spans departments. Typical sponsors include operations directors, CFOs, procurement teams, corporate development leads and, where technology is involved, CTO or IT leadership. Smaller purchases may go direct through an owner-manager or functional head; larger retained contracts often move through procurement, preferred-supplier lists or formal RFPs. Sales cycles vary because the category mixes service, asset and holding-company models, but buyers usually need confidence on delivery risk, financial stability, insurance, governance and handover arrangements before committing.
What they buy
These companies tend to buy the operational systems and advisory support needed to make mixed activities governable. Common spend areas include finance and consolidation software, CRM, procurement tooling, contract management, HR and payroll, cyber security, cloud infrastructure, data reporting, insurance, legal services, accounting, tax advice and company secretarial support. Service-heavy firms also tend to spend on recruitment, workforce management, compliance training and bid support. Where a holding or portfolio structure exists, tools that create visibility across subsidiaries, suppliers and contracts are often more relevant than single-department workflow software.
Why and how to sell to them
Ambiguity is often the commercial problem: buyers may be managing several revenue lines, shared services, subsidiaries or contract types without a clean operating model. They tend to evaluate vendors when a new contract is won, a leadership team changes, headcount is added, finance reporting becomes harder, procurement starts rationalising suppliers, or a transaction creates integration work. Outbound messaging is usually stronger when it names an operational trigger, such as reducing supplier sprawl, improving portfolio-level reporting, tightening contract controls or making service delivery auditable, rather than assuming a standard vertical pain point.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
