B2B Companies in the UK: 116,000+ Active Firms (2026)
B2B companies in the UK sell products and services to other organisations across regulated and unregulated markets.
Purchasing usually sits with operations, finance, commercial, technology and procurement teams rather than consumer marketing functions. The buyer types range from owner-managed SMEs and public bodies to mid-market groups and enterprise procurement desks, with engagements spanning repeat supply contracts, outsourced business services, subscription software, telecoms provision, data processing and regulated professional services. Typical sales motions are correspondingly mixed: some suppliers win low-touch renewals with lean staffing, while others manage long procurement cycles, tenders and compliance reviews. The common behavioural thread is a business-facing revenue model, supported by usable business-contact processes, opt-outs and call-screening where marketing or sales outreach depends on named contacts.
Across the UK, 116,259 active trading companies fall into this B2B cohort, making it a broad cross-section of suppliers rather than a narrow vertical. Reported headcount totals 41,973, although employment intensity varies because the category includes lean high-revenue entities as well as labour-heavy service providers. Commercial scale is uneven: 14,695 companies are above £5M turnover, while 7,422 were incorporated since 2022, so the cohort combines mature suppliers with a visible intake of newer firms. That spread matters for market sizing, as turnover and staffing can diverge sharply across wholesale, telecoms, software, data processing, financial services and professional services models.
B2B sits across several rulebooks because status depends on the underlying activity, not on selling to organisations in itself. Financial services, telecoms, data processing and professional services can each bring their own conduct, privacy or sector obligations. For marketing, the ICO treats PECR as covering direct marketing by live or automated calls, electronic mail and fax. B2B email or text to corporate subscribers does not need PECR consent, but senders must identify themselves and offer a valid opt-out address. UK GDPR still applies where personal data is processed, including business-contact details, and live business calls must be screened against CTPS and TPS where relevant.
Future activity appears likely to stay fragmented, partly because B2B covers repeatable software and telecoms revenue, relationship-led professional services, wholesale channels and regulated financial activity. Buyers tend to scrutinise suppliers on contact governance, procurement risk and proof of commercial resilience, especially where outreach uses named employees or where service failure affects other organisations. Newer firms may find it easier to enter narrow workflow niches than to displace embedded suppliers with existing contracts. Consolidation is more likely around categories with repeat billing, transferable customer lists and standardised delivery, while advisory and specialist service models may remain founder-led for longer.

Key facts
About 12% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (14,695 of 116,259 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
6% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (7,422 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
B2B is not a single licensed industry in the UK; regulation depends on the underlying activity, such as financial services, telecoms, data processing or professional services.
For B2B marketing, the ICO states that PECR covers direct marketing by live or automated calls, electronic mail and fax.
ICO guidance says the PECR electronic-mail rule does not apply to corporate subscribers, but senders must not conceal their identity and must provide a valid opt-out address.
The UK GDPR still applies where personal data is processed, including business-contact data.
ONS reported 2.73 million VAT and/or PAYE businesses as of March 2025, up 0.4% from March 2024.

How UK B2B companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Business-facing suppliers earn revenue through repeat supply, retained services, licences, subscriptions, usage-based charges and transaction fees. The product shape is broad: some sell physical goods into wholesale or industrial channels, others provide software, network capacity, managed services, data processing or regulated advice. Pricing tends to follow how delivery cost is incurred. Low-touch software and telecoms models often use monthly or annual contracts; professional and outsourced services are commonly scoped by retainer, project, day rate or service-level agreement; distributors rely on margin and volume terms. Gross margin, renewal rate and credit control matter because customers are organisations, not households, and delayed payment or failed implementation can affect the supplier's own cash cycle.
Who they sell to
Most sell to organisations with defined budget holders rather than to individual consumers. Small-business offers may be bought by owners, finance managers or office managers through direct sales or self-serve checkout; mid-market and enterprise deals usually involve finance, operations, technology, legal, security and procurement stakeholders. Public-sector work tends to be tendered or bought through approved frameworks, while channel-heavy categories use resellers, referral partners or systems integrators. Contract size is usually tied to risk and implementation effort: commodity supply can be reordered with light due diligence, while business-critical software, telecoms or outsourced operations move through discovery, commercial negotiation, compliance checks and renewal clauses.
What they buy
Spend usually follows the revenue motion. Subscription and usage-led suppliers tend to need CRM, billing, quoting, customer success, analytics, identity and security tooling, alongside cloud hosting, data storage and monitoring. Services-led firms spend more visibly on time recording, project management, document workflow, knowledge management, HR, recruitment, payroll and finance operations. Wholesale, telecoms and industrial suppliers add procurement, inventory, logistics, credit risk, collections and contract management. Across the category, firms also buy accounting, tax, legal, insurance, outsourced marketing, sales development, data enrichment and compliance support where customer-contact processes, supplier onboarding or regulated activity create audit trails.
Why and how to sell to them
B2B buyers tend to evaluate vendors when operating friction becomes visible: manual handoffs slow quote-to-cash, customer records fail audit checks, implementation backlogs threaten renewals, or credit exposure rises as larger customers demand longer payment terms. Other triggers include a new senior hire, funding round, acquisition, tender win, move into regulated work, systems replacement or a hiring run in sales, support, finance or technology. Outbound angles are usually clearer when they attach to a measurable workflow: reducing contract leakage, improving opt-out governance, shortening onboarding, protecting margin, or giving procurement evidence that service delivery can withstand a more demanding customer base.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
