Travel Sector Companies in the UK: 131,175 Active Firms (2026)
Travel and hospitality companies sell accommodation, food, drink, transport and trip services to domestic and international customers in the UK.
Buying centres tend to split between consumer-facing operations, corporate travel teams, venue management and intermediary channels. Smaller operators sell short-cycle bookings, meals, rooms, tickets or local services; larger groups manage recurring demand from employers, event organisers and travel distributors. Engagements range from card-paid consumer transactions to contracted accommodation, managed catering, agency commissions and venue hire. The common operating layer is demand management: reservations, payments, staffing, inventory, compliance and customer communications all sit close to revenue. Digital booking matters, but much of the cohort still depends on owned sites, local footfall, seasonal capacity and service quality at the point of delivery.

The UK has 131,175 actively trading travel and hospitality companies, making this a very broad operating-company cohort rather than a narrow software or agency niche. Scale is uneven: 1,341 companies report more than £5M in turnover, while 45,737 were incorporated since 2022, pointing to a large recent-formation tail alongside a smaller set of established operators. Reported employment totals 14,174 people, so the visible headcount footprint is material but should be read as a reported-employment measure rather than a full labour-market census. The mix covers venues, accommodation providers, agencies, transport-adjacent services and booking-led intermediaries serving domestic, inbound, outbound and corporate demand.
Flight-inclusive travel sales are shaped by the CAA’s ATOL regime, which protects travellers’ money if a travel operator ceases trading and applies to package holidays sold in the UK that include flights. Hospitality has a different compliance centre of gravity. Venues in England and Wales that sell or supply alcohol need authorisation from a local licensing authority, normally a council, under the Licensing Act framework overseen by the Home Office. Permanent alcohol sales usually require a premises licence, and sales must be authorised by a personal licence holder. UKHospitality and ABTA also matter as sector bodies, but membership is not the same thing as statutory permission to trade.
The sector appears likely to remain bifurcated between low-margin local operators and higher-revenue intermediaries that can aggregate demand without carrying the same property or staffing burden. Recent formation is high enough to suggest continuing churn, especially among venues and small service operators exposed to wage costs, rent, energy and seasonal demand. Larger operators tend to have more room to invest in reservation systems, workforce planning and direct customer relationships, while smaller firms often adopt tools only when required by distribution partners or payment flows. Regulation is not uniform across the cohort, but travel protection and local licensing will continue to shape operating risk.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (1,341 of 131,175 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
34% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (45,737 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Flight-inclusive package sales are shaped by the CAA’s ATOL regime, with ATOL holders paying £2.50 per traveller into a trust fund for refunds, reimbursement or repatriation.
Hospitality venues in England and Wales that sell or supply alcohol usually need local-authority authorisation under the Licensing Act 2003.
UKHospitality puts hospitality employment at 3.6 million people and direct economic contribution at £96 billion a year.
ONS estimates put 2024 overseas-resident visits to the UK at 42.6 million with £32.5 billion spent, while UK residents made 94.6 million visits abroad and spent £78.6 billion.
Travel and tourism contributed £286 billion to the UK economy in 2024, equal to 10% of total UK GDP, while international visitor spend was still 5.3% below 2019 levels at £40.3 billion.

How UK Travel Sector companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Travel and hospitality operators make money from capacity that expires if it is not sold: rooms, seats, tables, staff time, tickets and itinerary slots. Revenue usually comes through direct bookings, walk-in spend, contracted allocation, agency commission, service fees, deposits, cancellation charges and ancillary sales. Pricing is often variable by season, daypart, availability and customer type, with higher-margin demand coming from repeat corporate accounts, private events and direct channels. The product is a mix of physical service delivery and booking infrastructure, so commercial performance depends as much on utilisation, labour planning and supplier costs as it does on marketing reach.
Who they sell to
Most travel and hospitality firms sell either to individual travellers and diners, to corporate bookers, or to intermediaries that control demand. Consumer sales are usually card-paid and short-cycle, while employer travel, venue hire, managed catering and group bookings tend to involve procurement, finance, office management, HR, events or travel managers. Smaller suppliers often win work through local reputation, search, review channels and distribution partners; larger operators use account management, preferred-supplier agreements and formal tenders. Contract values range from low-value one-off bookings to recurring corporate or event spend, so qualification usually depends on site count, seasonality, channel mix and repeat-booking volume.
What they buy
Most travel and hospitality firms tend to spend on systems that protect margin or reduce operational friction: reservation tools, booking engines, payment processing, customer management, workforce scheduling, stock and inventory control, finance software, payroll, analytics and review management. Accommodation and venue operators often need channel management, rate management, maintenance workflows and guest messaging; agencies and intermediaries tend to need itinerary management, supplier connectivity, call handling and refund processes. Common service purchases include recruitment, training, licensing advice, accounting, insurance, search marketing, photography, facilities maintenance and outsourced customer support. Security, fraud controls and identity checks also become more relevant where online bookings, deposits or high-value trips are involved.
Why and how to sell to them
Travel and hospitality buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when demand becomes harder to forecast, commission costs rise, labour scheduling breaks down, or manual booking processes start to create visible service failures. Useful triggers include new sites, a shift into corporate accounts, a move from walk-in trade to booked demand, seasonal hiring, a change in finance or operations leadership, licensing work, or travel-protection obligations. Outbound usually lands better when it ties to a measurable operating pressure: fewer abandoned bookings, lower agency leakage, faster reconciliation, better rota coverage, cleaner customer records or fewer compliance errors. Generic growth messaging is less persuasive than evidence tied to occupancy, utilisation, repeat bookings or staff time.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
