E-commerce Companies in the UK: 62,000+ Active Firms (2026)
E-commerce companies in the UK sell goods and services through digital storefronts, marketplaces, and direct online channels.
Buying centres tend to sit across merchandising, performance marketing, payments, fulfilment, inventory and digital customer experience rather than in a single technology function. The customer base is mixed: many operators sell direct to consumers, while trade-ordering, wholesale and specialist marketplace models add a business-to-business layer. Engagements can be high-frequency and low-ticket for consumer retail, or account-based for business buyers where availability, credit terms and fulfilment reliability matter as much as checkout design. The commercially more mature cohort usually combines buying, pricing, acquisition, warehousing and returns capability, so the operational profile is closer to digitally enabled retail than pure software.
Across the UK, 62,526 e-commerce companies are actively trading, making the cohort broad but uneven: it includes marketplace sellers, own-site retailers, subscription merchants and business-to-business ordering platforms rather than a single business model. Reported employment across the group totals 12,987 people, so the visible headcount footprint is material without implying that every seller has a large payroll. The mix points to a long tail of small online merchants alongside a narrower set of scaled operators with in-house buying, marketing, customer service, fulfilment and technical teams.
Operating risk is shaped less by sector licensing than by the practical rules around selling, payment acceptance, returns, product claims, advertising and handling customer information. Marketplace-led firms also depend on platform policies that can change access to search placement, seller fees, dispute handling and delivery expectations. For cross-border sellers, customs paperwork, tax treatment and fulfilment location can matter as much as front-end conversion. The structure therefore favours operators that can coordinate merchandising, margin control and logistics, while thinner resellers remain exposed to paid-media costs and marketplace rule changes.
Further expansion appears likely to be selective rather than uniform. Brands with differentiated product access, repeat purchasing behaviour or trade-account relationships tend to have more room to absorb fulfilment costs and paid-acquisition volatility. Generic resellers look more exposed, particularly where marketplace visibility and delivery pricing sit outside their control. Consolidation has been a recurring route for operators trying to add customer lists, supplier relationships or warehouse capacity, but integration can be messy. The cohort’s early-commercial weight also suggests many firms will remain small, with a smaller group professionalising around inventory, data governance, returns management and margin discipline.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (789 of 62,526 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
39% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (24,641 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Digital storefronts, marketplaces and direct online channels create different margin, fulfilment and customer-acquisition profiles.
Marketplace sellers tend to trade off easier distribution against channel-dependency risk and less control over customer relationships.
Subscription commerce models place more weight on retention, payment handling and repeat fulfilment than one-off online retail.
B2B ordering portals usually sit closer to procurement workflows, with pricing, account management and integration needs shaping sales cycles.

How UK e-commerce companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from gross margin on goods sold online, with working capital tied up before the order is placed and margin realised only after payment, fulfilment and returns. A smaller group layers in marketplaces, subscriptions, trade portals or licence-priced digital goods, taking commission, recurring fees or account spend rather than only basket margin. Pricing is typically order-led: consumer baskets, repeat replenishment, wholesale account terms or seller fees. The service shape is operational as much as digital, because buying, stock control, checkout, warehousing, delivery and aftersales all affect whether revenue converts into cash.
Who they sell to
Most consumer-facing sellers rely on self-serve buying, paid and organic acquisition, and repeat purchase behaviour rather than negotiated procurement. Basket values are usually low relative to enterprise software, but frequency and retention matter. Business-to-business operators sell to purchasing managers, category buyers, operations teams and finance contacts, often through account management, credit checks, negotiated price lists and replenishment workflows. Sales cycles range from same-session checkout to longer trade-account onboarding, especially where supply assurance, delivery terms or product specification are part of the decision. Larger buyers tend to care less about web design and more about availability, service levels and invoice control.
What they buy
Most e-commerce firms tend to spend on systems that protect margin, reduce manual work and keep orders moving. Common categories include payments, fraud screening, inventory planning, warehouse management, parcel management, returns handling, customer service tooling, product information management, merchandising, pricing, analytics, attribution, consent management, CRM and finance reconciliation. Technical teams may also buy cloud hosting, monitoring, security, data integration and testing support, though many smaller merchants outsource most of that stack. Service spend often sits with paid-media agencies, SEO, conversion-rate optimisation, creative production, legal, accountancy, recruitment, interim operations support, fulfilment partners, packaging suppliers and carrier-management advisers.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial pressure often shows up in gross margin, acquisition cost, stockouts, failed deliveries, refund rates, chargebacks and the cash absorbed by inventory. Buying triggers include a new finance or operations leader, a warehouse move, a marketplace policy change, an international launch, a funding round, post-peak trading disappointment or headcount growth in marketing, customer service or fulfilment. Outbound tends to work better when it is tied to a specific leakage point: fewer refunds, cleaner reconciliation, lower delivery failure, better stock availability or less manual order handling. Broad digital-commerce claims usually land less well than evidence linked to contribution margin and operational control.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
