FMCG Companies in the UK: 51,000+ Active Firms (2026)
FMCG companies in the UK make, import and distribute fast-moving consumer products across food, drink, personal care and household categories.
Buying centres tend to sit with commercial, supply-chain, quality, finance and retailer-account teams rather than a single technology owner. Sellers range from import-led micro-businesses to multi-site manufacturers and distributors serving grocery, convenience, pharmacy, foodservice and online consumer channels. Engagements are usually operational rather than speculative: retailer onboarding, category management, demand planning, stock availability, labelling assurance and recall readiness all shape how these firms buy systems and services. Mid-market and enterprise suppliers are more likely to need formal quality processes and retailer reporting; smaller distributors often prioritise traceability, margin control and channel access.
Around 51,020 FMCG companies are actively trading in the UK, spanning consumer-packaged goods suppliers, wholesalers, importers and manufacturers. The cohort includes 1,419 firms with turnover above £5M, while 14,656 have been incorporated since 2022, so the market combines a long tail of newer entrants with a smaller revenue-scaled group. Reported employment totals 10,877 people, with all headcount-reporting firms recording at least one employee. That employment footprint understates the sector’s wider labour use where outsourced logistics, contract packing, agency warehousing and third-party manufacturing sit outside the direct payroll of brand owners and distributors.
Food and drink suppliers operate under mandatory labelling rules: product information must be accurate, not misleading and suitable for the market in which goods are sold. Great Britain applies retained food-information rules, while Northern Ireland can require EU food-law treatment for relevant goods. Non-food consumer products sit under the General Product Safety Regulations, with producer and distributor duties covering safety, traceability, risk notification and recalls, usually enforced through local trading standards. Packaging is another recurring obligation, as gov.uk guidance requires some organisations that import or supply packaging to report packaging activity and pay extended-producer-responsibility fees when thresholds are met.
The sector appears set to remain fragmented, with many early-commercial importers and brand owners operating alongside fewer revenue-scaled manufacturers and distributors. Retailer pressure tends to favour suppliers that can evidence traceability, availability and margin discipline, while smaller firms often face the same labelling and safety obligations without the internal compliance capacity of larger peers. Consolidation is likely to be selective rather than universal: contract manufacturing, warehousing and category-specific distribution give buyers several ways to add capacity without buying brands outright. Regulatory pressure around product information, recalls and packaging should keep operational systems close to commercial decision-making.

Key facts
About 2% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (1,419 of 51,020 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
28% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (14,656 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Food and drink manufacturing contributes £35 billion to the UK economy and accounts for 18.8% of total UK manufacturing turnover.
Retail sales volumes rose by 0.7% in 2024 after declines in 2023 and 2022, while food store volumes fell in 2024 and remained below recent levels.
Prepacked food in Great Britain must carry mandatory labelling under retained Food Information to Consumers Regulation 1169/2011, with information that is accurate and not misleading.
The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 set the baseline for non-food consumer goods in Great Britain, including duties on safety, traceability, risk notification and recalls.
Organisations importing or supplying packaging may need to report packaging data and pay fees under extended producer responsibility where turnover and packaging-tonnage thresholds are met.

How UK FMCG companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
FMCG firms earn revenue by moving packaged goods through high-frequency channels, usually on unit, case, pallet or container pricing. Margins come from manufacturing spread, import mark-up, wholesale distribution, private-label production, contract packing or brand ownership, with trade spend and promotional allowances often built into retailer economics. The product is mostly physical stock, but the commercial model depends on information flows: barcodes, product specifications, allergen or safety statements, packaging attributes, expiry dates and delivery performance. Smaller firms may operate as importers or category specialists; larger suppliers tend to combine production, warehousing, account management and technical assurance.
Who they sell to
Most sell into grocery, convenience, pharmacy, foodservice, online and general retail channels, with a smaller direct-to-consumer route for brands that can justify consumer acquisition costs. Buyers are usually category managers, commercial directors, procurement teams, technical managers and supply-chain leads, rather than a single executive sponsor. Sales cycles depend on channel access: independent retail and online channels can move quickly, while grocery and pharmacy listings usually require range reviews, technical checks, pricing negotiations and supply-chain onboarding. Contracts are often framed around supply terms, service levels, promotional calendars and rebate structures, not just headline unit price.
What they buy
FMCG firms tend to spend on systems and services that protect availability, margin and compliance. Common software categories include demand planning, inventory control, warehouse management, finance, EDI, trade promotion management, product information management, labelling, quality management, traceability, recall management and retailer reporting. Many also buy logistics, freight forwarding, contract packing, laboratory testing, packaging consultancy, legal advice, accountancy, credit control, recruitment and shopper marketing services. The better-qualified prospects are usually those with multiple sales channels, imported ranges, short shelf life products, regulated claims or retailer-specific reporting obligations, because manual processes become harder to defend as volume and channel complexity rise.
Why and how to sell to them
FMCG buyers tend to evaluate vendors when operational risk becomes visible: a new retail account, a range extension, a warehouse move, a recall exercise, packaging reporting work, margin leakage or a service-level failure. Outbound messages usually land better when they connect to trading consequences, such as fewer out-of-stocks, cleaner retailer onboarding, faster specification checks, lower write-offs or less manual reconciliation. The commercial case should speak to operations, finance and retailer-account teams at the same time. Short diagnostic offers, channel-specific proof points and implementation plans around seasonal trading windows are more credible than broad claims about efficiency.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
