SaaS Companies in the UK: 40,827 Active Firms (2026)
Software-as-a-service companies sell subscription-priced cloud applications to organisations across the UK’s data-driven economy.
Buying decisions tend to sit with revenue, finance, product, operations and IT teams rather than a single software desk. The UK cohort spans horizontal business applications, vertical workflow systems for regulated users, developer and infrastructure tools, and public-sector cloud services. Customer acquisition splits between low-touch self-service for smaller teams and sales-led procurement where the application touches customer data, payments, compliance evidence or core operations. Engagements are usually recurring contracts, with pilots, onboarding, integration work and service-level negotiation becoming more common as buyers move from departmental use to business-critical deployment.
Around 40,827 SaaS companies are actively trading in the UK, making the cohort broad enough to include enterprise suppliers, specialist workflow vendors and many recently formed micro-businesses. Within that active group, 741 report turnover above £5M and 11,597 were incorporated since 2022, so the list combines a sizeable long tail with a smaller revenue-proven tier. Reported employment totals 8,748 people, concentrated among firms that disclose employee numbers rather than the full labour footprint of UK cloud software.
UK SaaS suppliers are not licensed as a single regulated sector, so compliance usually follows the workload and buyer market. The ICO matters where platforms process personal data under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act, while cyber security expectations, consumer and contract law, and sector rules apply when software supports regulated clients. Cloud dependency adds a market-structure point: the CMA has examined public cloud infrastructure services and identified competition concerns that could affect switching, egress costs and supplier choice for application providers. That scrutiny is not a licensing regime for SaaS providers, but it shapes procurement conversations.
The cohort appears likely to keep splitting between narrow workflow products and broader platforms that sit inside finance, operations and customer-facing teams. Early-commercial firms tend to use integrations, security posture and implementation support to move beyond self-serve adoption, while mature suppliers face more scrutiny on contract terms, resilience and data processing. Consolidation may come from buyers preferring fewer suppliers and from cloud infrastructure economics, rather than from a product cycle alone. Scarcity at the scale-up end suggests the long tail will remain a defining feature.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (741 of 40,827 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
28% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (11,597 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UK SaaS suppliers are not licensed as a single sector; regulatory exposure usually comes through data protection, cyber security, consumer and contract law, and sector rules where software serves regulated clients.
The ICO is the relevant UK data-protection regulator where providers process personal data under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
The CMA closed its UK public-cloud infrastructure investigation on 31 July 2025, with remedies and a recommendation to examine the two largest infrastructure providers under strategic market status powers.
SaaS is described as one of the UK’s largest ICT markets, within a wider market of about 100,000 software companies.
The UK is described as the “second largest” ICT market by ICT spending per head after the US, and the “No. 1 destination for U.S. ICT businesses in Europe”.

How UK SaaS companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
SaaS companies earn mainly through recurring access to hosted software, usually priced by seat, usage tier, transaction volume or account size. Smaller products often begin with card-paid subscriptions and standard onboarding; business-critical systems tend to add annual contracts, implementation fees, integration work, support tiers and service-level commitments. Revenue can also come from managed services, premium support, compliance add-ons and partner referral arrangements, especially where the platform sits inside finance, customer operations, product delivery or regulated workflows. Gross margin depends less on the licence line and more on cloud costs, support burden, churn, and the amount of human implementation needed to make the application useful.
Who they sell to
Typical buyers range from smaller teams looking for a departmental tool to mid-market and enterprise customers replacing older workflow systems. Public-sector and regulated-industry buyers usually bring longer procurement steps, more security review and clearer evidence requirements. Decision-makers vary by use case: CFOs and finance operations teams tend to own billing and revenue systems, CTOs and engineering leaders assess developer or infrastructure tools, while operations, procurement, legal and data-protection teams often appear once the contract touches customer information or core processes. Low-touch sales can close through self-serve trials; larger accounts usually involve demos, pilots, security questionnaires, commercial negotiation and sometimes RFP-style procurement.
What they buy
Most SaaS firms tend to spend on the systems needed to acquire customers, operate cloud services and pass buyer scrutiny. Common categories include CRM, marketing automation, customer support, billing, subscription management, analytics, finance software, HR systems and recruitment support. Product and engineering teams often buy cloud infrastructure, developer tooling, monitoring, observability, incident management, testing, data warehousing and security services. Firms selling into regulated or public-sector buyers may also need legal advice, privacy support, penetration testing, compliance evidence management and outsourced implementation partners. As sales motion matures, spend often moves from founder-selected tools to governed procurement, vendor consolidation and clearer ownership by finance, IT and security.
Why and how to sell to them
SaaS buyers tend to evaluate vendors when growth exposes operational gaps: more salespeople, more customers, higher support load, larger contracts, tougher security reviews or a move from monthly self-serve plans to annual enterprise deals. Funding events, senior hires in finance or engineering, new public-sector ambitions and rising churn can all create intent. Useful outbound usually links the pitch to a measurable constraint, such as reducing cloud waste, shortening security review cycles, improving billing accuracy, lowering support burden or helping sales teams convert trials into contracted accounts. Claims should be specific and evidenced, because SaaS operators are used to comparing tools and will test whether a vendor understands recurring-revenue economics.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
